Brian Fuentes: bust or not?
Sure, sure, it's only six games into the season and the guy has only pitched 3 games. However, after today's shaky save and his last, not-so dominating appearance, its hard not to at least wonder deep down if Fuentes is going to be another off-season acquisition bust.
Obviously, it is too early to tell. However, there hasn't been any indication that he isn't going to be a bust either.
Has he earned your trust yet or do you already lack faith in our new closer?

He's on mine.
Only because hes new though. Someone who has been on the team for awhile, I tend to have more patience with. Hell, I gave Speier an entire season. So far, he hasn’t been that impressive to me though and I doesn’t have my trust.
Whew, good thing Im not manager.

I give him the benefit
of the doubt because he only threw 6 2/3 innings in the spring. I’ll wait and see where he is at at the end of april. If he blows another save or two well then things might change. But i’ll give him the month.
R.I.P. Nick Adenhart you will forever be missed...
Its over, Hes Done
Lets cut his ass now! This is ridiculous. I just…. cannot believe we signed this guy. One blown save? ONE BLOWN SAVE? Wow…..
I thought we signed a bad contract when we got GMJ, but this is maybe the worst closer in the history of anything picking up anything round and throwing it.
5000% bust, lets no look back. Who cares if its only his third save opportunity!
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
The irony here...
…is Mitch Williams had more in common with K-Rod (wild delivery, half falling down every other pitch or so) than with Fuentes.
also blew it in the playoffs

woah there
let’s remember that no one in the bullpen has been burning it up lately.
good call. although...'dondo has been pretty solid.
If i remember the runs against him were runners he let on base but that shields-y actually gave up.

When I wrote this I couldn’t help but to think how Fuentes first blown save prevented NA from getting his W.
Such a bummer…

Still too early to tell
Fuentes may be a bust, but i’m guessing any closer who has posted consecutive 30+ saves at Coors field of all places, probably is not. Rough outing today, and terrible one Wednesday, does not constitute a bust in my book. Come later this month or May, then yes, we should be concerned. Everyone just chill, and give the guy at least two weeks, before we vote him off the island. Let’s not forget that Frankie, despite the single season saves record, hardly ever, ever, had a 1-2-3 game over save.

I would like to remind everyone
That one year ago we were having almost this exact same conversation about Frankie. Remember the bruised ankles, the blown save opportunities, the skyrocketing ERA?
Remember what happened after that?
BF might not save 62, but it is WAY too early to freak out.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

IIRC, he was credited with a blown save and a win in the Hunter walk-off Grand Slam game...
…this was when he was having problems with his ankles.
Agreed though…way too early to freak out on Fuentes.
Agreed
It is way too early to make any type of informative statement on if he is a bust or not. Remember Fuentes became an All-Star and then went on to lose his closer’s job in CO, so he tends to be up and down.

Well
He was never a really shutdown closer in the class of Papelbon, Rivera, etc. I don’t think he’ll be stellar all year long, but the Angels haven’t really had the closer merry-go-round like other teams in recent years so I think he’ll keep the job.
replacement level analysis
i guess the giants should DFA Tim Lincecum too
the guy had a rough and scary spring with his child. give him time to locate his fastball for christ’s sake.
frankie loaded the bases in his second opportunity for the mets and the 3rd out was caught at the wall. lets not act like frankie was some lockdown guy. he blew 7 saves last year.
fuentes, like most strike out pitchers, needs a few weeks to locate and get his velocity up
RIP Nick Adenhart
Frankie walked a lot of batters...
This guy gives up a lot of hits. I’m a little worried.

i know its early but so far a bust
i didn’t really love the signing in the first place. i wish they would have just signed more depth then a closer and used Shields or Arredondo as the closers this year. anyways, seeing him a couple of times he doesn’t impress me. like that matters. i guess i’m use to the idea of having a closer thats intimidating, hard thrower types who put fear into the opposing hitters. that delivery just doesn’t do it for me. he’s too finesse. we have him for 3 years so i hope i’m dead wrong and he’s just lights out.
panic move poor signing, should of signed Putz
very poor signing, he was demoted at one point last year. Closers are hard to come by, I always say overpay for a closer if he is solid. Should of signed Franky, plan B should of been Putz. Plan C Arredondo, signing Fuentes is a waist of money.
by Ca1IFORNIA ANGELS on Apr 13, 2009 8:44 PM PDT reply actions
Putz wasn't a free agent.
The front office wasn’t going to throw Dondo out there to close games with less than 1 year of major league experience. He needs more time to develop behind a solid closer like Frankie did with Percival. Shields probably could close games but the FO likes him better in the setup role, so they signed a good closer who was solid last year in Fuentes. While I would have loved to see Frankie back it was clear that he wanted to test the free agent waters.
And dang, were those waters COLD!
