Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Mad libs anyone?

"That was as flagrant as anything as I've seen in this game," said Scioscia, who was ejected in the top of second for continuing to argue from the bench.

"There were some things that happened on that field that were disturbing. The league has to look into it," he added.

"Some words were said that were just outrageous," said Hunter, who rapidly went from peacemaker to protester. "And it wasn't from the Red Sox. I freaking lost it."

Asked if those words were spoken by the umpires since there were only Angels, Red Sox and umpires on the field, Hunter balked.

"I didn't say that," he answered. "It might have been the voices in my head."

nerves mught be too raw still

The umps were absolutely holding the Angels to a tougher standard than the Bristol Footsies.

I overheard a great point today

Any time a batter leaves the batter’s box to confront/point at/argue with an opposing pitcher he’s pretty much automatically tossed, but a pitcher can “charge” the batter’s box without throwing a punch and he gets to stay, every time, no matter how close his fastball came to the batter’s head

Win it for Nick

I absoultely love Torii Hunter now..........

seriously…..the guy is outstanding………..I had some issues with him last year….but it was me over-projecting on the guy……

but in all seriousness……..I’d go to battle with that man anyday.

Here's an idea.

Beckett and Chan Ho Park in a bare knuckles brawl. Two men enter, only one douche bag leaves.

I watched this from the right field seats

From my vantage point, I couldn’t make out much of the action once the benches cleared and the bullpen began their humorous jog out to the diamond.

There was one moment, during the second meeting of teams, where it looked almost as though it was coming to blows, although with whom I could not tell. I really would like it if someone watching on tv or with a better vantage point could illuminate me on what the play by play on the field was exactly… I mean, I’ve read the news clippings, but what exactly is Soscia and Torii talking about?

Torii was yelling at Scioscia that he is the hula-dula domino rula,

and Scioscia was challenging Torii to a game of dominoes since they would be sitting in the clubhouse together for the rest of the game.

Not sure I understand your question...

…to re-cap events, time was called as Beckett was in his wind-up. He appeared to immediately react by pitching the ball at Abreu’s head.
That COULD have been especially serious, since Abreu had “relaxed” and was not quite prepared for what was coming his way…in fact, the homeplate umpire completely missed what happened. He was looking down the left field line.
Hunter and Scioscia were pissed because 1) Beckett – in a hissy fit – probably threw intentionally at Abreu, and 2) it wouldn’t surprise me that he (Beckett) talked some s**t on the field that struck a nerve. Scioscia was likely asking for Beckett to be ejected…
Final note…Abreu and Beckett saw much more of each other the last couple of years and in more “stressful” situations when Abreu was with the Yanks. I’d bet there is some history here. Many pitchers get annoyed when batters call for time as they are in their wind-up. Beckett may have just got pissed at Abreu doing it one too many times, and figured this was a good way to communicate his annoyance.

by sothball on Apr 13, 2009 6:22 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

How about Abreu's annoyance

for being put to sleep while Beckett tries to think of a way to bring world peace in between pitches. No wonder Red Sox playoff games all last over 4 hours.

Obviously...

Justin Speier ran out of the ‘pen and started mixing things up with Torii Hunter, then Speier’s “Your Mama” jokes were just getting out of hand so the Umps told them to take it to the clubhouse. Scioscia and Hatcher were sent to listen in and judge the ensuing duel.

In all seriousness though, it sounds an awful lot like Joe West or another umpire brought up Nick Adenhart… and I can’t think of a reason in the world to do that if an umpire was looking to keep their job. When Torii Hunter and Mike Scioscia start saying the things they’re quoted as saying, I don’t doubt for a moment that something very very wrong happened on that field this Easter Sunday.

Never know

I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t the umpires but Beckett making snarky comments about Adenhart, given what he said after the game—“oh they’re just upset and aggressive because their teammate died.” Will it ever help that the umps are in Bahstin’s pocket, though?

Question Of The Day

Why don’t the two sides down in the bullpen stay in the bullpen and have it out with each other right there? Why do they politely jog all the way in to the infield side by side before they start mixing it up?

by Stirrups on Apr 13, 2009 1:08 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think its something like this...

…the game has barely started, you really aren’t paying too much attention, and suddenly the dugouts are emptying. At this point, you may not even be sure what has happened, or how this might escalate.

I think some want to figure out what is going on, some actually want to be peace-makers, some want to back-up their teammates at the “main event”.

It does appear slightly comical though…

by sothball on Apr 13, 2009 6:29 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

honestly

that picture makes it look like the ump is giving beckett a hand job in front of 40,000 people. i mean, he definitely did figuratively today, but this time it looks quite literal..

I'm trying to remember.....

It seems to me that there was some other incident in the past when Joe West was involved with an infuriating call against the Angels.

Did you all see Scioscia DRIVING Speier from the field?

That was funny.

I'm still trying to sort this out ...

was it BECKETT that said something to the Angels about Nick or was it the UMPIRES?

What I think happened is that Beckett started marching toward Abreu and that caused the first bench-clearing.

Scioscia got an earful from Beckett that led to the second bench clearing. During this second round, Torii and Speier going nuts was caused by one of the umps making a statement about “needing another day off” to cool off the emotions about Nick’s death.

The post-game comments by Beckett were downright insensitive in that he felt that the Angels taking exception to his near-beaning of Abreu was a result of high emotions from Thursday.

The summary is that Beckett made a mistake, but didn’t respond well to it instead taking on a “what the hell’s your problem” attitude instead of a “sorry, it was a mistake” kind of attitude. The Angels took exception and then the umps made an off-color comment that drove Torii, Sciosc, Speier and Hatcher to action.

Am I reading this right, then?

RIP Nick Adenhart - Angel fans will never forget you!

Sounds right

Hopefully there will be an investigation and it’ll be confirmed…though would this be a situation where the venerable ump’s word is trusted against the complaining players/managers/coaches?

I think the umps were

actually helping the angels out. They did not want to give the angels the chance to have the opportunity to let Speier come in and blow the game again.

R.I.P. Nick Adenhart you will forever be missed...

by angelskid2210 on Apr 13, 2009 10:50 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

So the umps had two possibilities to weigh against each other:

Send becky to the showers in the 2nd
or…
Prevent Speier from coming in for a brief stint in the top of the 7th.

Which one would favor the Halos more?

That the umps chose the latter says a lot about their true feelings for becky’s value.

by Stirrups on Apr 13, 2009 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They might the right one for me

beat Beckett and no chance for Speier to pitch…all in all good day. :)
