Terry Smith, Stellar Dude

Did anyone else catch the call in show today?  The last call was a guy who criticized the Angels players' decision to bring Nick Adenhart's gear on the road, and to keep a locker for him both home and away this year.  The caller called the decision "macabre."  Terry Smith, managing what seemed to be all the restraint he could muster, basically told the caller that the caller had no business criticizing the players and their method of dealing with the loss of their beloved teammate.

What struck me was how well Terry was able to convey, in much better terms than I can manage here, his respect for the Angels' players, while keeping his composure in what has to be one of the hardest situations for a broadcaster. Truly, Terry is a professional and not enough praise comes his way.

Did others hear that call, and if so, what did you all think of it?

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

I didn't hear that caller...

But during the game Terry showed so much class, as he always does, calling the events on the field in the first and second innings.

Missus Halofan told me all about it

She is the biggest Terry Smith an at the moment.

Didn't listen to it

But sounds like he handled it just right.

btw, anybody know where we can listen to the full post game press conferences? I’d like to hear the stories on the brawl..

i don’t think there was a press conference – just a few reporters in Mike’s office … on a Sunday day game there would not be any FSN Live production number or anything…

What the hell was that caller thinking?

That makes absolutely no sense to criticize the angels players for that. What a retard.

R.I.P Nick Adenhart 1986-2009 You will be greatly missed

I kind of agree but kind of don't

I have a brother who is retarded. I have called him that my whole life. I can see being offended when using that word to describe someone who is being rude, but I hope you were not attempting to cajole us into never using a specific and descriptive adjective from the language.

I've said it before

Nobody handles idiot Angels Talk callers better than Terry.

FWIW, during spring training I also found myself really liking his play by play style. I used to think it was boring for whatever reason, but I really dig the way he builds up a play. His voice gets progressively faster and louder, making the play exciting over the radio (and I hate listening to games on the radio).

The Phizz still doesn't know how to call a radio game.

“And there’s a ball up the middle. Oh, and Matthews catches it for the out!”

Ugh.

Terry Smith usually drives me nuts

He’s a team apologist, but they pay him, so he knows where his bread is buttered.

But in this instance, he was absolutely right. For the moment, I’m a fan.

GA GA he's the man, if he can't do it, no one can

Fuzzy Memories.

I remember back in ‘02, we had a couple of new broadcasters for the radio for the Angels, and they were anything but impressed by the team they were covering. I could hear in their voices the way they started rooting for the other teams in their broadcasts. The team was 8-3 and finally pulled off a win against Oakland to prevent their second consecutive series sweep. If I recall, that may have been where the Markas trademark “Just another Halo victory!” was born, deep in irony. And the 2002 Angels weren’t phased by their slow start, and during the course of that historic season, they earned the respect and love of the new guys in the radio booth. And so it was that as Eckstein caught that final ball of the 2002 season, Rory’s “Just another Halo victory!” became the ultimate of all ironies. And yeah — Terry Smith, for one, was a homer for life. With a bit of nostalgia when the Angels face the Yankees, that is.

You just lost a TON of credilility points...

…who made the final catch of the 2002 season? His name began wirh an E, but it wasn’t Eckstein.

No soup for you!!!!!

by sothball on Apr 13, 2009 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hahaha

Yeah, totally lost it there. And it’s not like I didn’t watch that game the day before Spring Training this year began. But my memory isn’t really that fuzzy, just my typing. Erstad, hah, of course caught that ball.

by AlanFalcon on Apr 13, 2009 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

In theory you might be right...

if you were talking about the last out that clinched the wild card. IIRC, Eckstein made the final catch in shallow left field in Arlington.

Markus didn’t say “just another halo victory” on 10/27/2002 fellas. He said “…and the Anaheim Angels are the champions of baseball!” or something to that effect. I never heard it live, as I was breaking down in tears in what is now section 260, row S.

That's not my memory of Rory and Terry in 2002

I remember Terry’s (gently) lecturing callers all season that they should be thrilled by the ride the team was taking them on. And Rory’s catch phrase was not borne of irony. It came from the winning streak that first brought them to .500 after the 6-14 start.

And I suppose it’s a matter of opinion what makes an announcer a homer, but I’ve never felt that was fair. Terry is no sycophant. He is a fierce partisan for the players because he considers them his friends, and has a deep respect for the job they do, so he sticks up for them as pals do for each other. I think his reaction to the idiot caller bears this out.

Nick Adenhart, RIP

My fuzzy memories stand corrected. :-)

Thanks, Spencer.

And from an old school-Miller’s Mailbag in 2003.

Rory said that throughout the 2002 season, he would leave the broadcast booth after the games at around the same time Spanish radio broadcasters Ivan Lara and Jose Mota would be leaving their booth. Ivan or Jose would always say, “What’s up, Rory?” As soon as the Angels started winning on a regular basis, Rory would answer their question by saying, “Just another Halo victory.” Soon enough, he started using it on the air.

I with you

When he tries to explain something like a rule or why this decision was made, etc, it drives me nuts because he makes no sense or it takes him waaaay too long!

That being said, he has to put up with some real morons sometimes, and he does it with class.

I have nothing important to say.

Okay....I'll say it...

I semi-agree with the caller.

Because…as far as I know, they’re gonna take his locker with him for the entire year.

To me, the problem with this is that he’ll become something he isn’t. At first it will be great. But after a while…When a player looks at it, they’ll think “Oh, it’s that.”

I think that eventually Nick Adenhart will become a gimmick…

That is, if they do this.

This has to do with THEIR mourning and THEIR way to honor Adenhart!

It will not be a gimmick – its about their loss and their way of handling it.
Let them handle it how they choose to. None of us would appreciate someone else
telling us how to handle such a great loss.

I agree, grief is a very personal thing....

…if it’s what his teammates want to do to mark their respect for him then that’s their choice.

by The Limey on Apr 14, 2009 2:37 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You are correct, Limey ...

Grief is a personal thing, and that was Terry’s point. You have to respect it. I lost a friend about 4 years ago, a co-worker I used to hang out with. He died in a scuba accident. I still have his name plate in my home office. It’s not macabre. I’m not dwelling on his accident. It reminds me of what a great guy he was. Likewise, Terry’s point was that there is no right way or wrong way to do this grief thing, so have some respect …

A rememberance or some memento ...

is important for me … I like to have something at my desk for the ones I’ve lost…. I’ll occasionally glance at it and then smile thinking about some funny moment I shared with that person.

Maybe that is how the Angels plan on doing it with the jersey in the dugout and the extra locker… a reminder that Nick’s memory is right there with them. He never left the team … he’s hanging around and they’ve left a place for him to return any time he likes.

I didn't mean that the Angels shouldn't do this...

I just meant that if t was me…I think eventually I’d start to see it as something that we were doing as a gimmick.

I’m not saying they will.

I’m sorry if it came across that way.

i think what figgis trying to say is

If the Angels keep doing this it might turn the memory of Nick into a sort of gimmick. Its kinda like everyone wearing 42 on Jackie Robinson day. At first its a really nice gesture and really means something, but as the years go on it sorta just becomes meaningless and a gimmick.

That'll only happen if that one prospect is the second coming of Christ and redemption for mankind can only be achieved by smacking many balls out of the yard.

I'm fairly sure that Torii Hunter, for one, was honored to wear 42.

And watching the Mets game, Mrs. Robinson was sure getting a lot out of it.

Sure these kinds of tribute won’t work for everyone, or will be great to start and then lose meaning. But as long as it means something to the guys on the field, and the families of those lost that night, then that’s all that matters.

Let's do this for Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, and Henry Pearson.

by AlanFalcon on Apr 16, 2009 12:49 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes, the 42 will always have meaning for certain players

but forcing everybody to wear it dilutes the meaning.

There was a conversation yesterday on the radio about that.

Garret Anderson didn’t want to wear it because he didn’t feel worthy of the number, but that there was a bunch of people (probably us) that mis-understood his decision as a lack of respcet.

By having EVERYONE wear 42, it takes away that issue of misinterpretation of the players decision and sorta levels the playing field, at least on paper…

I love Terry

I’ve been listening to his broadcasts since 2003 when MLBAM introduced Gameday Audio (I’m in NYC.) He has a wonderful dry wit and good insights, and he has a facility with words, which is a must-have for a radio announcer. And I think he’s not nearly as much of an apologist as many announcers I’ve heard, at least during the actual games. I miss his regular broadcasts with Rory, with whom he seems to have great chemistry — he and Hud don’t mesh nearly as well. (On the other hand, I much prefer Rory on TV to Phys & Hud — though I find Gubi the dullest of all of them, and am not entirely clear why he’s somehow preferable to Rex or Steve.) I listened to Sunday’s game, and I enjoyed the degree to which he was genuinely incensed at the apparent unfairness of the umpires while the brawl was happening. Anyway, I’m a fan, and now I can finally listen to Angel Talk since 830 has streaming audio.

by Ivan X on Apr 14, 2009 2:35 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'll take Gubi over Steve

Because Steve is asked to call play-by-play, and fails at it. And I do love Gameday Audio…. except so far this year when it has been a total failure (I listen to Archived games primarily). On the other hand, that got me to fork over for MLB.tv which is pretty fantastic. Again, when it works.
