Torii Hunter
I wasn't sure where else to put this, but I wanted to post and say how much respect I've developed for Torii Hunter. The way he talked to the media after the Adenhart tragedy and then yesterday, after the little blow up with the Red Sox. He was so pumped and emotional out there. And he does a ton of stuff for charity. I just think the guy's a class act. Come to think of it, I love that the Angels are the "nice guy" team.

That's why I'm okay with his contract
Despite the fact that we’re massively overpaying him as a baseball player, we are getting our money’s worth as a person and clubhouse leader. And I think we need/needed that with the departure of Erstad/Salmon/Cabrera.

i couldn't agree more
torii is the ultimate player. even with the charity and ball playing aside, it’s that intangible energy and leadership that players like texeira may never exhibit.

agreed
sometimes you pay for more than stats. Torii is an all-star off the field as well, something Im proud to have as an Angel.
Torii will age and decline, no doubt, but who he is will make it bearable. Not to pile on, but I think a lot of the reason some people turned on GA was that his perceived attitude kind of exacerbated his offensive decline.
RIP Nick Adenhart

Totally love the guy
I have a friend who interviewed Torii for the Register last year when Torii donated(?) the field in Placentia—said Hunter really is that great in person.
He’s only been here for a season, yet it seems like he’s been an Angel forever. Too bad he’ll be in the HOF as a Twin, if he gets there.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

Yeah, who knows?
I’m secretly hoping he outplays his contract beyond anything anyone’s seen and stays on with the Halos another five years beyond it…thus spending 10 years as a Halo and ensuring the logo on his cap in the hall.
That’s just my wishful thinking as a fan, though—I know Torii’s said he has a real soft spot and real tough nostalgia for Minnesota. But who knows?
RIP Nick Adenhart.

Um, he won't make the Hall
I agree, though, that he seems a terrific guy, and I’m happy to have him on the team.
What's the precedent?
I.e., for record-breaking fielding accomplishments? Not that Hunter will necessarily achieve such, but if he did?
RIP Nick Adenhart.

Even if he wins umpteen more GG
Cooperstown will elude him unless he gets 3,000 hits and seeing as he is at 1,375 hits, well, uh, he needs to average 200 hits per season for the next 8 seasons. The most hits he ever had in a season so far has been 172.

i named my dog
Torii after Torii Hunter…
he is one of my favorite players after only 1 year

I named my dog Aybar
after Erick Aybar … and he is just as frustrating as his namesake … wish I would have found a TORII at the shelter.

Or a GMJ...
Can’t run. Can’t catch. But still follows you constantly all over the house with a stick in his mouth wanting to go outside and play, and barking at you for not agreeing to do so.

I love Torii
Unabashedly. He’s a fantastic human being, and the perfect fit for this ballclub. I’m glad Arte stepped up to the plate last year and did what it took to sign Torii, even though we have so much money already committed to center field.

Mos Definitely.
Class Act all the way. What he said on ESPN about Adenhart and the way he tries to get our team pumped up. Love the guy.

I mean
Yeah, it’s a little annoying that whenever someone needs a comment, Torii’s always there. Every time. Even when it seems like his opinion is somewhat irrelevant (BUT I’m not in any way referring to the events of the past week). And that he’s declared himself a leader so quickly.
But you know what? I love it. I love his unabashed enthusiasm for this game, this team, his teammates, and probably his fans as well. It’s great. I love that he’s so articulate and that he just seems to have it all together for himself and his teams—he knows what needs to be done and does it. I look forward to seeing more of him over these next years.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

How did some of the articles I read ...
say that Abreu walked toward the mound. Bullshit. Beckett was the agressor by walking ALL THE WAY TO THE BATTER BOX. This is ridiculous.

If by "walk toward the mound"
they mean “step to the front of the batter’s box and put his hands up in disbelief” then that is an accurate retelling.

Seriously
Beckett was aggressive. And judging by the ump’s reaction (at 0:18 and again at 1:35) whatever Beckett said must have been out of line/uncalled for.
Heaven has another Angel. RIP, Nick Adenhart. You'll be missed.

I think he was also shocked to even see Becky so close to the batter's box.
Too bad he utterly faiied to gain any control over the situation. Stick your finger out, then close your fingers together leaving your thumb exposed, and violently motion that hand back to Boston. Then you wouldn’t have to worry about any Angel “aggressors”. And poor Joe West’s report would only have to be a quarter as long.

Can we use Becky as a nickname for Beckett everytime he comes up against us.

I love Torii
This is a guy who really wanted to play here…..That means a lot to me. Rather have him then K-rod, who couldn’t wait to get out.

I agree with what everyone has said...
I’ve got a 2-year-old and I look at a player like Torii and think, “that’s who her favorite player should be.” I’ve been a Halo fan since age 4 and have loved everyone from Salmon to Ersty to GA to Big Daddy. After watching Torii for his first year, somehow I already view him in the same company as the ones I previously mentioned. In fact, last week I headed to the ballpark to get me a new red authentic angels jersey (the one’s with the new patch on the left sleeve) and couldn’t resist buying a Hunter. This guy is the real deal!
"Sometimes it looks bad and sometimes it doesn't, but I'm not goint to stop swinging" - Vlad Guerrero
Somebody told me that
the reason Torii exploded was because Beckett said “You are mad at me just because your guy died?”. She said she found it in the LA times but I haven’t been able to track down the quote myself so take it with a grain of salt.
If that is true though…..then that is REALLY F’d up.
by Chzburger Jones on Apr 14, 2009 11:33 AM PDT reply actions
I don't think that's true because...
Torii was quoted as saying that the reason he got riled up was something said by someone NOT on the Red Sox. Obviously the implication is that it was an umpire.
RIP Nick Adenhart, #34
I think i read somewhere that Joe West said it
something along the lines of your just angry that your teammate died, or something

T-REX HUNTER
His gold glove prowess and champion attitude=winning!
Restore the California Angels namesake!
As a lifelong twins fan
it is no surprise to me that torii has emerged so quickly as the leader of your ball club.. He brings all of the intangibles that it takes for a championship club… He is an amazing leader who is in the mold of a great string of center fielders we (minny) have been blessed to have for so long. Hunter was drafted in ‘93 and groomed to be Kirby’s replacement and young pupil.. In fact he became just as big of a celebrity and “good guy” as Kirby was up here. Denard Span was drafted in ‘02 and was considered Torii’s replacement for when the inevitable huge contract from you guys happened down the road.. Torii did the same for D.Span that Kirby did for him when he was young and it has worked out thus far for the twins… As far as Torii being so feisty in the bench clearing brawl it doesnt surprise me one bit.. I remember in ’03? he was hit by a pitch by Dannys Baez i believe after being thrown at and nearly hit his previous at bat.. after being hit he picked up the ball and threw it back at Baez, not something that i consider that classy but a prime example of the energy and passion he brings to a ball club
Being classy's good
But that doesn’t mean you have to take any mess.

Someone just told me that they think Torii Hunter is the Terell Owens of baseball. I'm really not sure how to respond to that.
Whatever dude.
by Mayheminthehood on Apr 16, 2009 12:53 PM PDT reply actions
Well, that might go over her head, seeing as how she's a Dodger fan who thought it was a "wild pitch" and the Angels and Torii Hunter "started causing drama for no reason".
Whatever dude.
by Mayheminthehood on Apr 16, 2009 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions
Ah...more evidence...
…ask her what she thinks would have happened if Beckett had done the same thing to Manny. I bet there would have been plenty of pissed off Dodgers…fans and players.
Tell her that you find it interesting that she feels that way, and that you would love to talk with her about it more.
Just as soon as she gets to stop watching baseball games that use that funny black rubber tube sticking straight up to hold the baseballs at home plate.
That line's going in the movie.
Whatever dude.
