Brandon Wood Time Already!

Is anyone else thinking it is time to see Brandon Wood in the lineup?  Right now the Angels have 6 homeruns for the whole team.  Brandon has 3 homeruns in 4 games languishing in Salt Lake.  I for one would like to see him called up.  He had a great spring and he's taking off already in AAA.  Why waste him there?  There has already been a few games I would have like to see his bat.  Just a thought for today.

Ya Kendry really sucks.......but have you seen that guy Geruero?!?

And Hunter?!?
And Kendrick?!?

We should just DFA all 4 of them and bring up Brown, S-Rod, Wood, and Evans.

Are you serious, Morales/Napoli were our best hitters but Morales has had 2 back to back 0-for games. Now you guys are talking smack, what about Guerrero and Hunter, they are batting worse than Morales if you have not noticed, and a hit in his first at bat will put him over kendrick as well. Give me a break, the season just started.

Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Napoli was batting .667 (in 2 games)
Guerrero .250
Hunter .222
Kendrick .217

have you ever hear of small sample size?

Just because Morales is hitting very well in ~30 at bats doesn’t mean that he is that good, and it is no indicator of future success.

i would be ok with missing the playoffs in 09

if it meant wood got 500ABs and was ready to be a star in 2010.

but now we have an old roster that might not even make the playoffs this year even with Wood out of the lineup.

lack of foresight by tony IMHO

I know its early, but i also do not see morales as a long term solution at 1st base. The guy’s defense just isnt there and the offense isnt offsetting it.

im not saying i think we will

Damn...

Kendry should get more than 25 AB’s to prove himself, no? He has been hitting the ball well when I’ve seen the team play. His defense isn’t good, I agree there, but he is going to hit pretty well, it seems. Not a world-beater, but he seems fine.

The bigger issue is the decision to continually run Aybar out there after three years of evidence that he can’t really hit major league pitching. He needs to find some time on the pine and Wood needs to take his starting spot. If Figgins is going to stay on the roster, then Wood needs to play SS. Aybar isn’t good enough to offset B-Wood sitting in AAA.

ya, i dont think morales is terrible offensively

i mean, id say he’s an average-to-slightly-above-average bat but when you factor in the defense, the offense just isnt worth it. Its one thing if its adam dunn making stupid errors at first base and he hits 40 homers and 100 walks to offset it, but morales isnt that kind of guy offensively. In my opinion, the occasional double doesnt excuse the horrifying defense.

Barring a trade or injury, I just don’t see how it benefits Brandon’s development to sit on the bench.

I've said it here before

Trade Izzy, give Wood the start at short and have Aybar back him up. Next year slide Wood over to 3rd and give Aybar short again. Aybar has already developed into what he is; another year on the bench won’t hurt his future value. Wood can use the ab’s this year at the MLB level in order to be an impact bat next year.

by hk47 on Apr 16, 2009 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeppers.

But too late, I would wager. Aybar’s stock would plummet if you put him on the market now, instead of doing it over winter or waiting until closer to the trade deadlines. You wouldn’t get anything back for him now, since the other teams have yet to determine that they will have a need at SS so early in the season, and the Halos would be branding Aybar as damaged goods to be pulling the plug on him so soon in the campaign.

I have loved Izzy over Aybar all along, but continue to wait Aybar out as he develops. Now we got no choice but to hold him. The only move that delivers value at this time and makes sense to us is to trade Izzy in a package for arms and promote Wood.

by Stirrups on Apr 16, 2009 7:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Uh...logical inconsistency here...

You should have typed “Noppers”.
HK47 said to trade Aybar, and keep Izzy. You close by suggesting the exact opposite…keep Aybar, trade Izzy.

I know, I know…just seeing if anyone pays attention.

by sothball on Apr 16, 2009 7:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Not really. Just too brief.

I agree that trading Aybar is a good idea instead of trading Izzy. And I got me some mad love for Izzy’s skills.

But my next point is that our time for that has passed. Now, unless we wait until later in the season, we cannot get value so we cannot trade Aybar.

Meanwhile, we COULD still get value for Izzy.

So, if we need to trade one of them now and make room to bring up Wood, Izzy would be the one to go. Unfortunately.

Step 1 towards returning to respectability: Izzy starts at SS.

by Stirrups on Apr 16, 2009 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree about Brandon Wood

But remember, it’s only been one week. Every team goes through slumps, this one is just happening to the Angels at the beginning of the season.

In 2008, the Angels went 5 – 9 from August 13th through the 27th.

Give it some time before giving up the season.

I was uncool before uncool was cool.

by WiHaloFan on Apr 15, 2009 8:51 AM PDT reply actions

I would give it

another couple of weeks before we do anything. If we are still having power issues then I would definitely want to bring Wood up, assuming he will be playing everyday. I would then suggest the following for the line up:

If Morales is not cuttting it at 1B – then bench him
Move Kendrick to 1B – he played there a couple of years ago when Kotchman was out.
Move Figgins to 2B
Play Wood at 3B

If Morales is cutting it at 1B , but we still don’t have the pop in the lineup:
Play Wood at 3B
Make Figgins the super utility guy, and play him at a different position everyday, while giving everybody else a day off

I'm sure most of us agree

But you know hes going to play a bunch again this year short of hitting under the mendoza line. Hes likely to settle in as a .250/.320/.400 type guy, which for Scioscia will be just fine when combined with all the “virtues” he brings behind the plate. And if playing 1st can keep Naps healthy and in the line up, I’m all for it.

by AlanFalcon on Apr 15, 2009 10:13 AM PDT up reply actions

hmph.

Howie’s bat does not play at first, plus his D at 2nd is much better than most here give him credit for. I’m also not in favor of Figgins as a “super sub” again. Who exactly do we give a day off to regularly to make room for him? And hes done his job as our leadoff/3rd baseman, as he has over the last two years. No power, of course, but he does the other two things you like to see in your lead off hitter, get on base and run.

I’d say if Kendry doesn’t cut it at first, why not give Rivera a stab over there? Couldn’t be much worse. Don’t get me wrong, I still think Kendry can at least be decent over there, but if worse comes to worst…

I’m not going to get too giddy over Wood hitting long balls in Salt Lake. That is to be expected. It doesn’t mean hes Evan Longoria waiting to happen. Unless the team feels his bat will outshine Aybar’s glove (I think its possible) hes just going to have to wait patiently until an injury to our infield forces their hand.

by dmhead on Apr 15, 2009 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions

I think

Howies bat play’s fine a first if you have Wood in the lineup to provide the pop people are looking for. I was just offering up a suggestion based on the thought of getting Wood into the lineup. If they are going to bring him up, I feel they should play him as opposed to bring him up to sit on the bench.

I agree with you on Figgy being a super sub, I was just putting out a 2nd option, and Figgy is the only player we have that can play the multiple positions as I suggested.

RIP Nick. The Angels and their fans will always remember you.

by billhune on Apr 15, 2009 10:34 AM PDT up reply actions

(cont.)

is that Howie is turning out to be a decent 2nd baseman. Combine his hitting skills with some D at 2nd and you have an all star. Move him over to 1st and you have merely an adequate 1st baseman. I suppose that contradicts the fact that we have Figgy at 3rd, though, doesn’t it?

by dmhead on Apr 15, 2009 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Last year the average first baseman had a .793 OPS in the AL

Howie Kendricks career OPS is .756. He would have to hit a lot better than he has to be an average first baseman.

Am I the only one who is more than a little nervous about the private jet Arte chartered to go to Adenhart’s funeral?

The plane is to carry Moreno, Reagins, Scioscia, Butcher, Lackey, Weaver, Moseley and Tim Mead tonight from Seattle to Maryland, then return them all to Seattle in time for Thursday’s game.

Anybody in corporate world will tell you it is fundamentally unsafe to place all the eggs in one basket when it comes to travel. The folks who ran In-N-Out disobeyed that rule, and wound up almost destroying the company when most of the key execs were killed in a private plane crash on approach to John Wayne.

Doesn’t the whole team travel together all the time? Granted, not necessarily on smaller planes, and not usually with such a tight schedule, but I still don’t want to worry too much.

Let's do this for Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, and Henry Pearson.

by AlanFalcon on Apr 15, 2009 10:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Sciosica, yes

But it isn’t a given that Reagins and Moreno travel with the team. Moreno goes on the occasional road date, and Reagins will travel more frequently than Moreno but he doesn’t go to every road date, either.

I suspect both men travel separately from the team.

by George Kaplan on Apr 16, 2009 3:40 AM PDT up reply actions

I am curious about that.

What and when did this happen?

More than 15 years ago

The president of In-N-Out was on a small chartered plane, and it crashed while it was coming in for a landing at John Wayne (got caught in another, much larger, plane’s wake turbulence). The president’s brother had to take over the company. He died 5 or 6 years later of an overdose of something or another.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Apr 16, 2009 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Correct, but...

That wasn’t where I was going with that. In addition to Snyder, the plane also held the company’s COO/EVP. The loss of both execs almost killed the company because it was instantly vulnerable by the loss of experienced leadership.

Most companies have rules prohibiting key execs flying together.

Hopefully

Sosh will not let Wood waste away in triple A if the Halos continue their funk. HGH is taking up a roster spot. The Angels knew this before they signed Rivera to a 3 year deal. oh.. and after they did this they signed another outfielder named Abreu. We have Aybar & Izzy (basically “thing 1 & thing 2”). Something has got to give.

When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!

I see what you did there.

by AlanFalcon on Apr 15, 2009 10:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Basically, we don't have a lot of power...

…and Wood is killing AAA pitching. There’s no doubt he comes up when the Angels get through this pitching need they have because of all the injuries and Adenhart’s passing.

so Vlad is hurt now..

if he goes on the DL, they better bring Brandon Wood up to add some power to the lineup..

Can he pitch relief?

Angel Pitching (Adenhart), Angel Defense - get past that.

Correct me if I’m wrong… but I think Scosh despises guys who don’t make contact with baseballs, move runners around, go from 1st to 3rd on a single to CF, aka, gamers. So, that sums it up. Wood is not a Scoscia guy.

by Colorado Fan on Apr 18, 2009 1:06 AM PDT reply actions

really

what about tim salmon, or troy glaus, or dallas mcphereson who was given the starters job? What about bobby abreu? Just as beane looks to exploit inefficiencies in the market, the Angels have their own particular brand of baseball. And guess what? Its worked a hell of alot better than anything Beane has done in the past 10 years.

Wood"s not slow, so 1st to 3rd...not a problem

2 HR’s in a game against Yanks last year, suicide squeezing home Naps in a game last year. Safe to say he can DO all the little things, he just something else that most angel players on the roster can’t do…hit the ball a long, long, long way

Phys: Well, Coon doesn't have a lot of power but he's a good bunter
Coon: F$%# That!
Thanks Zu

If the Angels keep playing the way they do

All the Wood jock hangers will be seeing him playing regularly in Anaheim sooner than later if the Angels recent swoon becomes a bit prolonged. If he is the Angels’ savior in 2009, then the team is in more trouble than anyone things.

I’m up for giving Wood his shot to be something for the next five years or so, but it doesn’t mean everyone else up already is tradeable crap just because Richard is supposed to be this uber prospect who is supposed to come in and dominate.

He is just as unproven as Kendry or Aybar are, except maybe he is still a little bit more hyped up.

by BBFan1 on Apr 18, 2009 6:30 AM PDT reply actions

Wrong.

I agree he’s no savior, but Brandon is younger and has better tools than both of them. Neither of those guys hit 30 homers a year in the minors. Kendry looks like a stop-gap at this point, and Aybar is a typical all-glove, no hit shortstop. Which would be fine if the rest of the line-up could produce.

by dmhead on Apr 18, 2009 11:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Wood coming up?

He did not play at AAA for the 2nd straight day and there is still no info on the website. I’ve got to think that he’s the one coming up with Vlad out for a month or more.

Figgy to LF
Abreu to RF
Wood at 3B

Thats what Terry Smith mentioned as a possible scenario. My fingers are crossed.

He was at the funeral

He flew to Maryland for the Adenhart funeral, as far as I can tell. Since he was flying commercial (not on Arte’s rented jet), and he needed to get to Reno. Logistics might be the issue.

by George Kaplan on Apr 18, 2009 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Or Wood at DH

If you don’t want to move Figgins (who has played great defense over the last year). But in any case, Maicer Izturis is not a DH.

by RallyMonkey5 on Apr 18, 2009 2:16 PM PDT reply actions

I'll take that

I don’t care how but we need his bat in the lineup..He should get 400+AB and then they can evaluate
his long term potential. DH,3B,SS whatever get him in there.

by blb76 on Apr 18, 2009 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

WOOD

he thought their was pressure last season to produce. with all this thats happening, he’s going to have soo much pressure to perform. how long are you guys going to give him if he’s brought up to produce??

by HALO_86 on Apr 18, 2009 3:26 PM PDT reply actions

Before

you guys jump to the next guy in line. S-Rod, Brown, and anyone else in 3A or even 2A.

by HALO_86 on Apr 18, 2009 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Angels' fans will give him all the time in the wold

If he fails to live up to expectations, fans will moan about the Halos jerking him around when he was 24, thus permanently scarring his Major League career.

If he has success, ‘we told you so Angels, why didn’t you bring him up earlier.’

by BBFan1 on Apr 18, 2009 5:43 PM PDT up reply actions

400 AB's

Will be a good amount to evaluate..I’d reserve judgement on him if he continues to show
the improved plate discipline he did in AZ. Pressure is part of pro-sports, he’s
24 and a former 1st rdr. Lets not baby him, he can handle it.

by blb76 on Apr 18, 2009 3:35 PM PDT reply actions

Here is the perfect solution.

1) Ship Rivera’s ass out for pitching help

2) Move Figgins permanently to LF

3) Call up Brandon Wood and put him at 3B

4*) Bench Failbar’s ass and start Izturis at SS

  • = optional

by Chzburger Jones on Apr 19, 2009 2:42 AM PDT reply actions

Can't trade Rivera until July

There are restrictions on the trading of a just-signed free agent.

Of course, by then Rivera will be in a hot streak and everyone will be loving on him.

by George Kaplan on Apr 19, 2009 6:37 AM PDT up reply actions

isnt it different though since we resigned him

And hes cheap and will get better. I dont understand the juan hating

by anaheim angels on Apr 19, 2009 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions

3 years and 12 million seemed cheap at the time

but with Abreu getting 5 mill for just 1 year and Orlando Hudson getting just 3.8 million for 1 year, the deal doesn’t seem all that great anymore. Plus the signing of Abreu made the Rivera signing pretty pointless and obsolete IMO. We will continue to have an OF log jam for the next 3 years and it’s effectively blocking Brandon Wood since Figgins can’t move back to the OF.

by Chzburger Jones on Apr 19, 2009 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions

But it's all moot

The “logjam” isn’t a three-year problem, since Abreu’s deal is for this year only, Figgins figures to be gone after this season and we don’t know Vlad’s future (though his stock certainly dropped some with his pectoral injury). The Angels aren’t exactly as ass-deep in OF prospects as they are in middle IF players, so keeping Rivera through 2011 wasn’t a bad idea.

In addition, it’s Abreu who is blocking Figgins, since Abreu is the LF, presuming Vlad to be the RF. Abreu is going to be in more lineups than Rivera until Rivera gets a hot streak going.

It is post hoc reasoning to assume that Abreu would play RF with Vlad on the DL and then as DH, since this wasn’t known to anyone when either Rivera or Abreu was signed.
