Mike Napoli hit a 2-Out single to plate two Angels and a succession of base hits afterward scored 3 more runs as the Halos cashed in a 5-Run 6th inning to a victory, avoiding a sweep by the Seattle squad.
On a day when All Star outfielder Vladimir Guerrero flew to Los Angels to be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum for his sore pectoral muscle and Manager Mike Scioscia led a delegation of teammates cross country for NIck Adenhart's funeral, Joe Saunders delivered the good news. He retired the first 9 batters he faced, got into a jam in the 4th that yielded a run, but left them loaded with strikeout of Wladimir Balentien.
After that Saunders cruised and only one Mariner reached base - and that Endy Chavez single was shown to be an out on replay Chavez was promptly erased on a double play grounder by Adrian Beltre.
Jose Aredondo and Brian Fuentes pitched scoreless frames and the Angels head to Minnesota, saddened, undermanned, but obviously ready to play ball.

well
there are alot of people willing to do it. well, the beauty is that you actually dont need alot of people to be willing to do it. Just 4 people or so in the world that are willing is sufficient

I voted Naps
and I think Saunders pitched pretty much as well as he could. Once the M’s scratched out a run I think we were all afraid the Angels would go down 1-0. Naps ended that thought and that’s why he’s panther. He’s turning into much more than just a walk, homer, K guy as well.

His 7 inning outing was much needed for a beleaguered bullpen.
That win was big. It might only be April, but the Angels need to hang in there. With Big John and Ervin still about a month away and Vlad possibly heading to the DL, the Angels are going to have to scrap together wins in any way possible.

Congrats on the much-needed W for you guys. We took the series, so I was fine giving y’all this game.
I knew Saunders would pwn us, especially since Wako hasn’t quite figured out that Branyan can’t hit lefties. I love Wak, but he’s not perfect.
Also our bullpen still sucks. Kelley is the only one I trust, although Lowe seems to be getting back into form. I knew Jako would not last through 6 innings, if that, and that the ’pen was due for some pwnage. Glad to oblige…
I still hate the Angels passionately (least favorite team, next to perhaps the Stealers) but thanks for bein’ cool with me as I bopped over here to give a look-see at our SBN cousin blog. One of my Lenten penances was to walk in the shoes of my enemies ;-)
I voted for Saunders, but yeah definitely Napoli is worthy as well. Speaking of Napoli (who I’m also adding to my “Mariner Killers” list), someone tell him and the ump that the Tacoma Mothers’ Day ring contest isn’t until May:
