What Type Of Lineup Do You Want?
Monkeyspanked's Fanpost about bringing Brandon Wood up got me thinking.
What type of lineup does everybody want to see? With rotation weakened due to the injuries of Lackey, Santana and Escobar, would you rather put a more offensive lineup out there (sacrificing some defense) going with the thinking that we need to try and outscore everybody,or would you rather put a more defensive lineup out there, (sacrificing some offense) trying to limit the # of runs the other teams score.
Will your thinking change when the 3 injured stsarters return? Does your thinking change from pitcher to pitcher
My lineups would probably look something like this:
Offense inclined lineup
Figgins - 3b
Kendrick - 2b
Abreu - RF
Guerrero - DH
Hunter - CF
Rivera - LF
Napoli - C
Morales - 1b
Wood - ss
Defense Inclined Lineup
Figgins - 3b
Kendrick - 2b
Hunter - CF
Guerrero - DH
Morales - 1b
Matthews - RF
Mathis - C
Aybar - ss
Willits - LF

Not even close...
But I would still modify your top lineup to be:
Figgins – 3b
Abreu – RF
Guerrero – DH
Hunter – CF
Morales – 1b
Napoli – C
Rivera – LF
Wood – ss
Kendrick – 2b
I think Howie is still better in the bottom third at this point in his career. He just presses too much at the top and needs lay off the outside cheese.
Plus I know Soth loves some speed at the top and bottom.

Mine
1.Figgins 3B 2.Abreu LF 3.Guerrero RF 4.Napoli DH 5.Kendrick 2B 6.Hunter CF 7.Morales 1B 8.Mathis C 9.Wood SS
I prefer to get Howie out of the top 3 put him in the middle 3 to drive in more potential runs with his pure hitting. Sit Rivera until he proves something or Mathis shows he absolutely can’t hit and move Nap back to fulltime C. trade Izzy to bring up Wood and move Aybar to the bench. i hope Vlad is healthy.

Rivera?
I know it’s early, but Johnny Rivers is currently hitting just a smidge under .300. Yes, there was one frustrating game where he left runners on base, but you’ll notice that prior to last night the rest of the team wasn’t hitting w/RISP either. Based on past experience, and the way catchers tend to tire over the course of a season, I have a lot more confidence in the combination of Rivera/Napoli than having Mathis/Napoli in the lineup every day.

There's a fundamental flaw in your post...
…at least at this time. The starting pitching has been excellent so far. So – unless SP deteriorates over the next 2-3 weeks – there won’t be much net gain in the return of Lackey, Santana, and Escobar.
The 2 most glaring weaknesses to date have been hitting generally (clutch hitting specifically) and the bullpen. The hitting situation likely will not be helped by the injury to Vald (although he hasn’t hit much to date either).
So…regardless of the return of the other SP’s we need more offense! Is Wood the answer? I am not convinced. Woody would likely suffer the same “growth pains” as Morales. And I definitely wouldn’t start Willits in an offensive or defensive line-up.

I put Willits
in my Defensive lineup, because an outfield of Hunter, Matthews and Willits is the best Defensive outfield we can put on the field.
RIP Nick. The Angels and their fans will always remember you.

Figgins – 3B
Abreu – DH/RF
Hunter- CF
Guerrero – RF/DH
Napoli – C
Morales – 1B
Rivera – LF
Kendrick – 2B
Wood/Aybar/Izturis – SS
I prefer Abreu as DH whenever possible. I think it’s dumb to have a set lineup for more than one or two games, but this is what I’d go with right now.
I also think it’s dumb that we’re not alternating between Aybar and Wood.

I like you batting order
except I’d flip-flop Morales and Rivera. I know it’s only been a little over a week, but I’m starting to have doubts Morales. The problem with my batting order is there’d be 4 right-handed batters in a row.

I like this question...
“What type of lineup do you want??”
Uh, I want one that SCORES DOZENS OF RUNS PER GAME!

9. Quinlan

Wouldn't Quinlan clog the basepaths for Quinlan?
Of course, that goofy swing would just confuse the entire opposing D.

nahh
you need some Q in there

In all seriousness, I love the Q.
But I’d probably think something like…
1. Figgins 3B
2. Abreu RF
3. Vlad DH
4. Hunter CF
5. Napoli C
6. Rivera LF
7. Kendrick 2B
8. Morales 1B
9. Izzy SS
If Wood was in the lineup at SS, I’d flip-flop 9 and 7. Q in instead of Kendry against lefties.

Let me try!
1. Figgins
2. Abreu
3. Hunter
4. Vlad
5. Morales
6. Napoli
7. Aybar
8. Rivera
9. Howie
I like the lefty righty balance of this lineup.
Gotta go with speed at the top. Love how Abreu works the count—what a difference huh?! I love Howie, but he looks like he’s pressing right now. When (not if) he starts hitting more, I’d move him back up.
Torii hitting third might give him more fastballs to hit with Vlad hitting behind him. The only reason I went with Morales instead of Naps hitting 5th is because he’s a switch hitter.
Aybar has to go somewhere and I think the only other spot I would put him in my construed lineup is ninth. He’s seventh not ninth because he’s a switch hitter too.
With HGH in the lineup instead of Rivera I would like this:
1. Figgins
2. Abreu
3. Hunter
4. Vlad
5. Morales
6. Napoli
7. HGH
8. Howie
9. Aybar

switch Aybar and Howie 7 and 9 (1st lineup)
Aybar does not have the OBP to hit that high

Any word on Vlad?
Just checking to see if anybody had heard anything about his visit with Yocum yet. Haven’t been on the intranets much today.

Freakin' Freakity Freak Freak!
Substitute F-bomb in the above title. Vlad is out “at least” a month. So maybe that means we’ll see a lot of more Naps at DH, I hope. But still, we’re a little screwed. What next plague will you visit upon us, O Baseball Gods?
