Wood Still on FIRE
Brandon Wood hit his 4th home run in as many games and also doubled. He has 7 Hits in 5 games. 4 are Home Runs. 1 a Double. 1 a Triple. and 1 a Single.
This kid needs to be in the Bigs NOW!!!!!
I say screw the pen, one relife pitcher is going to pitch a couple times a week and he probably wont do so good (I am talking about one that is called up) and Wood on the Other hand will play every day, drive in runs every day, and every day will come closer to becoming the Superstar we all know he can become.

This is the problem with not trading either Figgy or GMJ
We lose our biggest power bat, and we replace it with sucky GMJ production, instead of our biggest young power bat. Now the regular lineup includes 2.5 singles hitters (Figgy, Aybar, and half of Jeff Mathis), a doubles hitter (Howie), at least one bleah hitter (GMJ), and only 2.5 guys with anything resembling good power (Hunter, Rivera, and half of Mike Napoli). Our lineup is now officially unbalanced, all because we don’t have the cojones to make room for a guy who is ready, right now, to hit a lot of home runs at the big league level.
What I would do — give Chone an outfielder’s glove, tell Gary to get bent, install Wood at 3B, and let Rivera/Abreu take turns hiding their gloves. We keep our effective leadoff hitter, we insert power, we retain at least some outfield speed, and we improve the next half-decade’s teams by letting Brandon work it on out.
There is no excuse for having Maicer Izturis DH, while a healthy B-Wood slugs 1.000 in the minors. This is madness, and gutlessness, and it reflects very poorly on Scioscia and Reagins.
+ 1 to almost all of this, the only problem being that Figgins now looks like he’s a very good defensive third basemen, and not a good defensive outfielder, so if he’s going to play you might as well play the best defense you have. In any configuration with Figgins (configginsuration?) would it be better to have Wood play 1B and move Kendry to the OF? It’s a leap of faith, but I trust that a guy who can play SS and 3B as well as Wood could handle 1B without much practice.
Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?
Saving countless runs with my defense.

Why penalize Kendry?
He’s been buried the last several years and 2009 is his first full season.
I don’t think he’s 30 or even 28 yet so I don’t get the impatience people are showing towards him.
He was a ‘high-profile’ international signing and let’s see what he can do at his listed age of 25/26 before sending off to the bench.
Legs, arms, and hands are useful things
I agree that Figgy has been playing terrific D (today excepted), and that his previous trips to the corner OF weren’t works of art. BUT — he’s fast as hell, and has a good arm, so even him re-learning on the job would be better than Rivera or Abreu.
And, Wood is a very good defensive 3Bman as well. Something’s gotta give to make this happen, and I’m happy with that something being a the primary position of the guy who A) is in his walk year, B) does not hit like a 3Bman, and C) has been employed previously (and successfully) as a defensive rover.
He cant be any worse than Quinlan in the OF.........
who played there today.

I would say like 60/40 split to Juan in the OF
he so far has been worth .8 runs defensively according to fangraphs, and has historically been a much better fielder than abreu

peter gammons just said on ESPN we need to trade Wood
im confused. Apparently to be competitive this year, we need to part with Wood and Mathis and other young players.
huh? We’re getting terribly old, Vlad and figgins might be gone and we’re gonna trade Wood before he presumably gets an everyday job?
Thanks for the astute analysis ESPN

Opinions are like assholes...

Gammons
Why would we trade Wood? The nut finally fell out of the tree. That or he was drunk.
Nick, you will always be an Angel. And you will be missed.

Scioscia indicated the club will fortify the bench with another position player when the load diminishes on the bullpen.
