YESSSSS
i saw some guy mention this in rob neyer’s chat and i thought he was full of it.
lets hope hes in the lineup TONITE
RIP Nick Adenhart
doesnt it seem like SS improves our offense the most dramatically?
even a struggling wood provides more impact than aybar right now at the plate
maybe a lineup of
Figgins – 3B
Kendrick – 2B
Abreu – RF
Hula – CF
Morales – 1B
Rivera – LF
Wood – SS
Napoli -C
Izturis – DH
??
is it a bad idea to give wood a little protection?
RIP Nick Adenhart

i know, but if you look at the way this team is hitting
everyone is hitting singles and pretty much only singles other than torii hunter. Wood at least gives us a threat of a big double or home run. aybar, even when he’s on, is pretty much a slap hitter with a very iffy approach at the plate
i like aybar’s defense, but we need a little spark to get our offense rolling

Aybar has a career OBP of .296
which is at least 100 points below what a slap hitter with 4 career home runs should be.
I am a fair weather fan so the Angels better win!
and such a long career it has been.
the dude hasnt even reached his peak yet. Give it some time…he might come around and be pretty damn good with the wood.

I see a much bigger upside to Wood
Aybar has had almost two full seasons which is enough to get a idea of what we should be able to expect from him. As a defender, he has great range and a good arm but still is below average in fielding percentage. Despite the errors, if you look at “total fielding runs above average,” his fielding in 2008 saved 9.5 runs, but if you look at this batting numbers, his “adjusted batting runs” were 10.1 runs below the league average. In other words his defense is about a wash with his offensive numbers. He has to learn to get on base more to be productive and I think he needs to do that in AAA—the Angels still have an option with him and since he is not contributing to the offense let him work on his plate discipline there.
If you compare Aybar’s minor league numbers with Wood’s, Aybar had a minor league .809 OPS—Wood’s is .892. At short stop, Aybar’s fielding percentage was .950 compared to .952 for Wood and their range factor was very close, 4.67 for Aybar and 4.41 for Wood. I do not see a considerable drop in the defense with Wood playing short.
The bottom line is that Wood cannot develop anymore at AAA and needs to get consistent major league at bats. Last year when he had a chance due to injuries, he didn’t do well and went back to AAA needing to work some things out which by all reports he was able to do. Rookies usually don’t do well in a DH roll and since It is time to let him have his chance to play everyday I would like to see him as the Angels starting shortstop. The only reason he wasn’t out of spring training is that Aybar had a fantastic spring, but he hasn’t carried that over into the regular season. His numbers are going back to where they were last year which shouldn’t cut it in the major league.
I am a fair weather fan so the Angels better win!

If you're going to DH one of Izturis or Wood...
…it should be Wood. Izzy’s better with the glove. But I’d put Mattews in that lineup in LF and DH Rivera in place of Izturis.
does it matter Seitz?
After all, were not making it to the playoffs til 2013…that was your prediction a few game threads back, right?

Awesome!
Last night, while nodding off to sleep, I had some fantasia whereby GMJ + plus some reliever like Bulger was packaged to the Reds for either Harang or Arroyo, with Figgins being handed his LFer glove. It’s fantasia, sure, but I certainly slept well!
you had that chick that won American Idol?

totally OT
but David Archuleta is using my band’s drum set on AI tomorrow night.
i personally can’t stand the show, but it’s cool nonetheless. :)

what on earth
is your band like a studio band or something?

no, we just have an awesome set ;)
it’s a Truth custom set… here’s the story:
our lead singer grew up with the owner of Truth drums. Archuleta’s band just ordered a Truth kit with the exact same dimensions as ours, but it won’t be ready for a couple of weeks. they wanted to use it for the AI show. so, long story short, we get a call asking if they can use our set for the show. we, of course, say yes, and now they’re using our set.
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

Harang threw a temper tantrum after the bullpen blew his last start
Play Wood already. Willits sucks.
I could see him and Speier getting into a rumble.

Let’s hope this new leg kick works.
Play Wood already. Willits sucks.
Im happy but everyone needs to chill. Hes not Jesus Christ of Angels Baseball.
I hope he does well but he might not be our answer so dont start bitching if he goes 1 for 12 in his first 3 games.

I am just worried were gonna put our faith into Wood and if he doesnt make an immediate impact he suddenly becomes a scapegoat for our woes.

Enough Already
Seriously people, enough weight has been put on this guy’s shoulders already and he isn’t even in the lineup full time yet.
You guys talk about Wood like he is the answer to everything, and he has yet to perform on a major league level well enough to earn a full time spot here. Yeah, we are loaded up in front of him, but when it comes time for him to perform in the majors he hasn’t been that impressive yet.
Yeah he had a great spring, yeah he has a ton of potential, but don’t start buying up his jersey and claiming that the messiah is here before he has his first at bat.
I don’t want to see the cries from everyone if he isn’t living up to his potential, it will be like all hope is lost.
Lets be realistic here… the bullpen is more of a problem than the guys at the plate right now.

1. try reading everyone's reasoning for being excited
and 2. id say the offense is absolutely as much of the problem. If we’re not expecting to cling to 2-1 leads every game, the bullpen isnt under as much of a microscope

Hey thanks for ruining our fun.
It has been a very depressing season so far, so sorry if we get excited by the possibility of seeing Wood play and maybe hit some dingers for this anemic offense.
I’m taking a trip to Hawaii this summer – would you like to lecture me about possible volcano explosions and the high price of food and drinks?

AMEN
This is my biggest concern regarding B-Wood’s call up. If he struggles, which he almost certainly will, whats the next plan? I just don’t see him coming up and going all Albert Pujols or singlehandedly turning around the offense. Besides, our bully sucks, he would really help if he could pitch the 7,8, or ninth.

OUR SAVIOR HAS ARRIVED!
Right? Right? No?
Let's do this for Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, and Henry Pearson.
just because they called him up doesnt mean he will play
Soth still has a stiffy for Aybar and Izzy. Wood will be lucky if he plays much
RIP Nick. We will miss you!
Uhh, hope nobody was really counting on Anthony Ortega helping us out...
he got shellacked again last night! ERA = 9.88
Soth please put Woodie at SS and let’s play the rest of the season! If he comes up and sits the pine again I may just blow a gasket!
Miss you Nick...! RIP
hahaha....awesome.
Pretty soon everyone will be moved up a league until Rancho has to forfeit all their games because they dont have 9 players.

PRAISE JEEBUS.
And yeah, I totally agree with TheAntiSox. That makes room for Wood to be a full time player (at least until Vlad comes back) and Rivera can still get his AB’s at DH. And HGH doesn’t lose any playing time since he was a bench player to begin with.

Wood on the pine...
3B Chone Figgins
2B Howie Kendrick
DH Maicer Izturis
LF Bobby Abreu
CF Torii Hunter
1B Kendry Morales
C Mike Napoli
RF Gary Matthews Jr.
SS Erick Aybar

whats the point of bringing him up and not playing him?
