Bad News, April 22 Version: Oliver to the DL
Darren Oliver is the latest casualty suffering a strained triceps. Kelvim Escobar was sent to the 60-day DL to make room for the long-awaited Matt Palmer (maybe he could be more of a saviour than Brandon Wood?).

umm
really, how is this even possible? who’s in charge of strength training/injury prevention for our pitchers? This is beyond belief at this point.
I love the tags.
but seriously, this is getting ridiculous. Soon we’re going to have an entire bullpen’s worth of pitching on the DL.
we already have an entire rotaion on the DL
if you count oliver

Let's do this for Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, and Henry Pearson.
This explains Reagins checking into Pedro
It was clear the Front Office had info on one of the recovery paths from the three pitchers which indicated all was not sunny and light.
Turns out, it was Escobar, who had been leading a charmed life for most of the Spring. Reality caught up with him.
Does anyone know if the 60 days is retroactive, or if it is from 4/22?
I'll answer my own question
Does anyone know if the 60 days is retroactive, or if it is from 4/22?
According to the story on MLB.com, it is retroactive to April 3rd.
That means he is eligible to come off the DL no sooner than June 2nd.
If the Angels were to add a starting pitcher, though, somebody would have to be dropped from the 40-man roster. Thompson has been excellent in SLC and I think the team is waiting for him to show the same stuff and consistency in Anaheim. I think Bulger scares the crap out of the front office, with the idea that the team could cut him, he’d find a home on another roster and turn into Bobby Jenks, Jr.
That leaves the possibility that a player like Terry Evans might get cut, but with the lack of OF prospects in the system, that doesn’t seem likely, either. Besides, the kid just hit a grand slam yesterday…
There is always the possibility of trading for a pitcher, which would be a swap of bodies to and from the 40-man, of course. But signing a free agent like Pedro would require dropping someone from that roster, which complicates the transaction.

60-day DL
removes the player from the 40-man. As of this moment, Escobar no longer counts towards the 40. I’m not sure if that leaves them with 39, or if the Escobar move was necessary to add Palmer.
what I read is that Escobar’s move was necessary for promoting Palmer to pitch tonight.
In a year of such turmoil, whining still abounds.

Big surprise
Escobar’s injury has always been serious enough that counting on him to pitch this season was never anything more than wishful thinking. Pedro Martinez should have been signed a month ago. Matt Palmer is not really a prospect, if he was San Francisco would have kept him on their roster. He’s a AAA pitcher. The best you can hope for is a few decent starts before the magic dust wears off, like Mickey Callaway at the end of 2002. At this point, Angels don’t have any major league ready pitching prospects (Reckling, O’Sullivan, and Walden may be there in the future, but aren’t ready yet).
The choices are to rush good prospects who aren’t ready, use AAA talent in the majors, or sign a veteran or two who may be able to contribute, though health is no sure thing. Of these options, only the third one has a reasonable chance of success.
Forget Mulder, he has been and still is toast.

Can we get a sidebar list
Of all the players currently on the DL and for what duration?
I am seriously getting a headache trying to keep them all straight. Plus I bet it will look pretty comical all lined up like that.
I'm not superstitious, but I'm a little stitious.
That's a good link
Thanks!

Another one bites the dust...
Face it, everything is all HGH’s fault.
Is the guy throwing batting practice any good? I guess we could run him or Mike Butcher out there to throw a couple of innings, right?
The Padres have been stockpiling any pitcher that hits the waiver wire for MLB, Minor League, the Independent League, and the YMCA League. The Ninja should be doing the same – hell it can’t be worse than running Matt Palmer out there.

Ugh
I can’t believe the season is over before it began. Well, maybe not.
The time is out of joint; oh cursed spite, that ever I was born to set it right.

our starting pitchers are still keeping a low ERA through 6 inning plus...
amazing I know and whether we can maintain that, who knows.

Message to Angels FO
Stop being cheap, sign Pedro.
anybody else really starting to question our training staff?
i mean… honestly. how many guys are going to hit the DL? maybe we should change their exercise regiments or look into what we’re doing to them.
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34
I think we are just trying to buy time.
Lackey and Santana are set to come out of DL in early May. That is only a few weeks from now, which puts our rotation at Lackey, Santana, Weaver, Saunders, Loux. That is not nearly as bad.
Besides, it is the pen that has been troublesome and we still have Arredondo, Shields, Bulger, Speier, Fuentes in there. If one of them could get a few outs once in a while we would be winning some of these ballgames.
In good news, worries about the inability of our lineup to generate runs seems to have been overestimated.

It's still the rotation's fault
Their injuries (not that its their fault their injured) are still the root of the problem.
If guys like Oliver, Moseley, and Loux weren’t in the rotation, they’d be pitching in relief (and Moseley and Oliver likely would have staved off injury).
And Arredondo, Shields, and Fuentes are too good to pitch this bad for long. I think the failures of the rest of the bullpen, combined with the fact they rarely get a lead to try to save, has led them to “force it” a bit. Out of all our problems, I’m most confident that these guys will shake it off and start to pitch better soon.
Problem is equally the pen, I would say.
The 6th, 7th, 8th, guy off the street starters we are throwing in there are getting the job done (against all odds), and the games are being lost by the pen.
You say it yourself, Arredondo, Shields and Fuentes are not pitching well. I agree they are good, and should get better, but they are to blame for pitching poorly in the meantime. If they can only pitch with a lead (which they have had mind you) then they aren’t that good and we should be looking for help.
