A Letter to the Fans from Arte Moreno
READ:
ARTE MORENO'S LETTER TO ALL ANGEL FANS
I think there's no question we have the best owner in sports and the best organization. Win or lose, agree or disagree... we all should be proud to be spoiled by such a classy and well-run organization that handles itself with dignity.
We may not be the best in the Win columns, but I wouldn't trade the Angels for any team in the world :)
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

FACT
and also 1 of 2 franchises (LA Kings) who actually originated in LA.
i’d have a different take on the Los Angeles name thing if there was never any history but c’mon, they were named the Angels in honor of the city.

I never thought of that
But most of the franchises (Dodgers, Lakers, Clippers, Rams, Raiders) were transplanted.
I guess one needs to go all the way to franchises like the Galaxy and WTT teams to find another locally-bred team.

Try to imagine how this would have sounded if Disney was still the owner of the Angels...
…written by someone that may not even know what a baseball looked like, reviewed by a team of attorneys and marketing gurus, studied by focus groups, and ultimately signed by Eisner/Iger who probably couldn’t put Adenhart’s name with his face.
Yes, we are extremely fortunate to have Arte as the owner of the Angels. Long may he ilve and prosper.

Don't be too hard on Disney
They did learn from their early mistakes, we won in 2002 under them, and they made sure they sold to a great buyer.

I wasn't trying to be hard on Disney.
I was attempting to contrast the personal vs. impersonal, the mega-corporation vs. the “mom & pop” approach. As I read the letter, I could picture Arte sitting at his desk and formulating the thoughts and words. Could you imagine Iger or Eisner doing the same thing?
I concede your points on winning in 2002 and making sure a great buyer took control of the team.
by sothball on Apr 25, 2009 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
and its totally spot on
the only thing is that if we were still owned by disney then maybe they could convince ESPN to give us more love. help out their product. then again, probably not.
that being said, fuck disney. the shit they pull is worse for a society than crack.
oh yah, arte is the man.

And I'm not a particular Disney partisan
(except for Walt himself), but I do remember that it was Eisner’s personal intervention that prevented Erstad from being traded (after the 2000 season? I don’t recall precisely), and I appreciated that greatly.
Bottom line is this: compare Disney’s stewardship of the Angels with Fox’s of the Dodgers. Disney may have tried to force teal blue and Sport Goofy on us at first, but they did improve the franchise overall. Fox actively destroyed the entire Dodger team culture, and left the franchise nothing more than a park and a trademark. As corporate owners go, Disney was a benign one. Sure, Arte Moreno is a much better owner, but Disney was not an evil one.

Disney
And I’m not a particular Disney partisan
(except for Walt himself), but I do remember that it was Eisner’s personal intervention that prevented Erstad from being traded (after the 2000 season? I don’t recall precisely), and I appreciated that greatly.
True. However, it was Eisner who hired Tavares for the job of running the team (Eisner, a hockey fan, knew nothing of baseball), and it was Tavares who was seeking a way to effectively fire the entire team and replace just about everybody. Tavares was there because Eisner gave him the keys, and while it is true that Eisner overruled the trade, it happened only because of the personnel decisions Eisner made in the first place.
It was Tavares who, in the wake of the Mo Vaughn debacle, dictated the franchise be run on a shoestring budget, citing Jackie Autry’s claim that Anaheim was a small market for a franchise and should be budgeted accordingly. For all the heat Moreno has taken for the inclusion of “Los Angeles” in the team’s name, he has run it like a big-market team and has reaped the returns of a big-market team. The use of “Los Angeles” in the name has helped advertisers to understand that the team draws from the entire LA Metro area, and not just the more local North OC area, something “Anaheim” might have indicated.
We should also recall that Disney listened closely to MLB to see if the team could be contracted (along with the Twins and/or Oakland) to reduce the number of teams in baseball, back when fans were beginning to shun Angel baseball for the mediocre play and the infantilism of the game by Disney. Once Disney realized it was work owning a baseball franchise, it couldn’t get rid of the team fast enough. It wasn’t a jewel of the company that was cherished.
As far as Moreno goes, we’re incredibly fortunate to have him as the owner, but he was the only buyer Disney had. The other ownership groups (like the one headed by Peter Ueberroth) didn’t have the cash or clout to get the deal done, and Moreno’s Hispanic heritage appealed to Selig as well.
Yes, Disney was better than News Corp/Fox as an owner, but that’s like saying one is happy to have herpes because it could have been AIDS. Disney’s ownership does not reflect much of a high-water mark for the franchise, except for the remodel of the stadium, which was accomplished with city money as well as Disney’s.
by George Kaplan on Apr 27, 2009 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
At least herpes designed a pretty decent ballpark.
Though maybe the right field wall didn’t have to be quite so tall.
Let's do this for Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, and Henry Pearson.

The reason
Disney sold the Angels is that the Tax advantages had run out. The first couple of years of owning a baseball team confer huge tax breaks (you get to write off the total value of all contracts fo rthe first two years for instance). Once the tax advantages had run out Disney didn’t see the monetary advantages any more. Bill Veeck used to do the same thing when he was buying teams.

One of the most valued aspects of a professional sports franchise is the support an organization receives from the local community. Throughout the ups and downs of a season, that relationship remains a very important one.
The senseless tragedy of April 9th affected not only our organization, but the entire community as well. Since that time, we have been greatly impressed by the outpouring of support directed toward the families of Nick, Courtney, Henry and Jon. From the memorials created in front of the stadium and corner of the accident, to the cards and letters directed to our attention, your thoughts, prayers and best wishes have made a difference.
As we continue to struggle with our own individual questions of why, I am reminded that true character is revealed in the most difficult and challenging of times. The grieving will be different for everyone, and the hurt and heartache will not easily disappear. Your thoughtful words and gestures have been felt by our personnel, and continue to have a profound effect on each of the families.
The Angels organization will maintain the memory of Nick for years to come, and will continue extending our support to the Adenhart family. The same will hold true for the families of Courtney, Henry and Jon as well.
On Friday, April 10th, during an emotional pre-game tribute, I witnessed a stadium filled with individuals wanting to make a difference. On behalf of the Angels family, I would like to thank everyone for the impact you have made each and every day since.
Respectfully,
Arte Moreno

I like Steve just fine...
but his attitude towards Moreno in that piece is just puzzling.
Fun fact about Arte in Forbes annual analysis of the baseball owners: A significant portion of Moreno’s money is tied up in stock for Viacom and CBS—Viacom bought Moreno’s billboard business, and CBS was split off from the company with shareholders receiving equity as compensation. Both stocks have been hammered in the market downturn, which means Moreno, while still wealthier than yours truly, is significantly less wealthy than he was a year ago. Bisheff’s puzzling us-vs-them prose about “mansions” and comparing him to John Moores makes it seem like Moreno is Scrooge for not opening his checkbook and signing Pedro (and anyone else) Bisheff seems to think will provide the guaranteed World Championship.
In fact, Moreno did spend in the offseason, even as he watched his personal holdings take a pounding this past Winter. I think Bisheff’s attitude is mystifying, as it comes from someone who is allegedly watching the team in all aspects, including the financial angle. He seems to think Moreno has unlimited resources to spend, above and beyond the 9-figure payroll he maintains (not to mention the overall costs of the team’s administrative payroll, from scouts to secretaries).
Bisheff is utterly, completely off-base and clueless in his blog posting. I am really disappointed in his post.

another genius Arte production is his radio station. i have never heard so much “Angel talk” in my life. i mean, there’s Angel Talk after the games but with Biggy’s show and the one after, it’s like constant Angels….and i love it.
we are blessed to have Arte and that championship will be here soon.

Yeah, it's great having the Angels radio station for once!
I just have to remember to turn off my radio when I drive to work near the end of the game and hadn’t been listening to it or watching it. I listen to the games at work sometimes when I’m doing other stuff at night… and my radio’s always on AM 830 so I don’t want to ruin the end of the game.
