Flock of Angels: Halos Sweep Orioles

Final Score in Baltimore: Angels 3, Orioles 2

An RBI Triple and a solo HR by Kendry Morales made a fine pitching performance by journeyman Shane Loux hold up as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-2, giving the Angels a sweep of the 2-Game series and their third victory in a row - the first time that has happened to the star-crossed club this season.

When Loux finally faltered with a leadoff double in the 7th, Justin Speier came out of the bullpen to quell the would-be rally. The oft-maligned reliever struck out 2 and got Brian Roberts to line out to First Base. Jose Arredondo made the game a little more adventurous when he gave up a run in the 8th inning on back-to-back singles but struck out 2 and benefited from a great throw by Jeff Mathis to catch Nick Markakis stealing.

Loux was tremendous, at one time retiring 11 straight Orioles in the middle innings. He allowed 5 hits, 1 Earned Run and struck out 3. Brian Fuentes pitched a scoreless 9th for his 5th save of the season.

On offense, back-to-back solo homers by Torii Hunter and Kendry Morales to lead off the top of the 7th inning were the difference. Later, with one out in the inning, Gary Matthews Jr. hit a liner off the sternum of Oriole pitcher Koji Uehara, removing him from the game - but the damage was done. X-rays were negative, but you would not wish that play on even the most hated pitchers in the league, except maybe Josh Beckett.

Morales also hit a run-scoring triple to tie the game in the 4th inning. In Brandon Wood news, Chone Figgins went 0 for 5 and left 3 runners on base.

That reminds me…. did we do away with the win/loss pictures. They were helpful for my short attention span!

1-2-3 with a one run lead is pretty Panther.

The O's have a good offense...

Roberts, Markakis, Jones are nothing to sneeze at. Add in Wieters at the break and they will be tough to pitch to.

Don't forget Huff.

I think the Orioles scored more runs than we did last year. They hit more homers and had a higher BA also.

by howiestheman on Apr 29, 2009 2:12 PM PDT reply actions

the question should be how long does Aybar have to suck before we play wood? At least Figgy is getting on base.

His .352 OBP with 9 steals isn’t that bad. On the other hand Aybar with his .259 OBP really sucks. And it’s not like Aybar’s D is ripping it up either. It’s been downright bad.

Aybar isn’t hitting and if he ain’t fielding I can’t see the liability of playing Wood.

by melvintoast on Apr 29, 2009 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Izturis can play in place of Failbar

Until he gets hurt again, which I assume he will at some point.

Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?

by BBFan1 on Apr 29, 2009 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Scioscia sees this

That’s why he benched Aybar again today. But he isn’t as quick to completely give up on players the way some fans would.

by Brody on Apr 29, 2009 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions

you all never learn...

You dont bench a player permanently after 20 games…plus, Aybar batted 350. on our last road trip. Sure, we went 1-5 on the road trip but it wasn’t his fault.

Plus, anyone who has watched Angels baseball longer than 1 month knows that Scioscia doesn’t make knee-jerk reactions to a player struggling. Im all for Wood getting some playing time but he isn’t going to be replacing anyone unless Figgy or Aybar or whoever is still sucking it up come the All-Star break.

Do it for Nick '09

by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on Apr 29, 2009 10:22 PM PDT up reply actions

My opinion on Aybar is based on his work in total--not just this year. He has always sucked.

See my post in the Wood vs. Aybar thread. there is no reason at all to have him taking up a spot in the roster.

another secret item is

pepperchinis (or however you spell them). Just ask for chopped chillies, and theyll put them on the burger. Be ware, do not order them on the side (in a bag) and let them sit in the fridge for upwards of a year. Spice Index goes up by a very massive number. Trust me, its a bad experience.

That'll only happen if that one prospect is the second coming of Christ and redemption for mankind can only be achieved by smacking many balls out of the yard.

In a 1-2-3 ballgame, this is where Fuentes has a shot at POTG if you’re taking WPA into consideration. According to Fangraphs he had the second most important performance, behind Morales. But – ignoring Fangraphs, I give POTG to Loux – we needed Houdini today, and that’s who showed up.
