RIP Brian Powers, Angels Fan
While we cannot speculate on what exactly took place at this point in time, what we do know is that a young man has lost his life today over something so stupid as a baseball game. This happened right in our home stadium.
I hope we can all re-focus as a result of this. What is important in life?
We are all struggling with our country's economic condition. Let's all come together and "escape" our troubles at the stadium. Be kind to each other, INCLUDING VISITING FANS. Why do we have to hate on each other?
Be cool everyone.
Go America and Go Baseball!
Brian, may you rest in peace; sorry that you had to leave in this manner.

We all have one thing in common (visiting fans included)
the love for baseball! while we may disagree as to who is the best we can all agree that baseball is our escape from the realities of this horrible economy!
RIP Brian Powers!
There is an "Angel in the outfield" and his name is GA! ps. he is lazy but not a bum GO HALOS!
RIP Brian Powers
i can only hope that national media will bring attention to this tragedy. and one can hope that people will remember this and think twice before doing something horrible and, at worst, tragic. its just baseball guys. its only a game. no life should ever be in jeopardy for simply attending a game.
Still, I wish I was here

Good lord.
Hopefully people will bring attention to this. Unbelievable that someone died like that.

RIP Brian Powers..
Such a sad thing to happen at a place where we’re supposed to be able to go to ‘escape’ for a few hours. As a M’s fan living in OC, I go to 9-12 games a year at Angel Stadium to see them and I can’t understand how someone can get to that point, alcohol involved or not. Of course there’s the unavoidable bickering back and forth and whatnot, but I don’t see what would drive someone to take those actions. It’s unjustifiable and a disgrace to all of us fans that can take a little verbal abuse towards our team without blowing up. People need to relax and just enjoy themselves at the ballgame, win or lose.
RIP Brian Powers.

I think you're all jumping to conclusions - again.
It’s quite possible that this had nothing to do with opposing fans. Unless only A’s fans sport goatees these days, nothing that I have read has described the attackers as fans of either team.
"We don’t know what the fight was about and who was the aggressor," (Anaheim police Sgt. Rick) Martinez said.
Whatever the case, it still casts a shadow over the early season. Damn.
In defese of the "you're all" to whom you refer...
we are trying to keep this thread to only reflection and suggestions for moving on. Nobody has placed blame here (yet), although, the register “user comments” section is a collection of hate and prejudices like you have never seen. Maybe that is what you are referring to. If so, I wholeheartedly agree with you.

"You're all" was broad and sweeping. My bad.
But from the comments above I got the impression that most folks assumed it was a fight between Angels and A’s fan.

An e-mail from a friend...
My friend Julianne ( the girl in the skirt at tailgating ) saw the whole thing. Her and her friends saw it on the news and they asked for anyone with info to call, they did. She saw one guy say something to another guy, then that guy came up and punched him HARD in the face, the guy was already unconscious before he hit his head on the railing HARD. Then when he was down on not moving, another guy came and kept beating him. The dood that Julianne was with actually pulled the last guy off the beaten guy. Then they both left, and the other guy was just laying there in his own blood. They were all Angel fans at the Bud Area. She said it all took place in 20 seconds. F’n stupid.

Our condolences to his family and loved ones.
On another note, and I hate to make this sound “wrong”, but does anyone think the new cheap tickets could be attracting a bad crowd?
I was uncool before uncool was cool.
Maybe a combination of both
“Hey, let’s go to the ballgame. It’s only $3 and the beer’s pretty cheap too. We’ll drink some beer and kick some ass.”
I was uncool before uncool was cool.
Sorry, but this is probably the wrong thread to talk about this.
I was uncool before uncool was cool.
No.
I think cheap tickets attract just as many mild-mannered, middle class families of 4 or 5 who can’t afford $30 a pop. It would make us feel better if we could find some overarching rationale for what has happened, but perhaps the truth is that is was a senseless act of violence.
Such a shame. I used to think Angels fans, as well as the organization itself, had more class than most others. Seriously reevaluating that notion. I had already decided to never go to another Freeway Series game because of how hostile the environment has gotten. Now, Angels fans are killing each other?

Also...
Opening night was not a cheapie night. It is a premium game, even in the down economy. I had a buddy in F133 tell me that the place was SLAMMED on opening night.

RIP, my friend. First Halo Fan Killed in the Line Of Duty.
Everybody who passes the place of the assault needs to pour a swig of their newly purchased beer on the concourse as a tribute.
Tragic
Forgive my intrusion into what is a fairly respective and well-thought out thread, and while I agree this is a tragic accident/crime (as stated before, the facts need to be borne out before any conclusions are made), isn’t analogizing this guy’s death to the sacrifices of the police officers/armed forces who really are risking their lives in the line of duty rather trite? Yes the young man died unnecessarily, but is it really respectful to those who died protecting and serving to compare these two circumstances?
I coulda guessed that this was coming.
I was not comparing. I was not trivializing. And Line Of Duty is not a reserved phrase.
If taken literally
yes “line of duty” is not a reserved phrase, but what other implication can be taken from the context in which you’ve used it? The implications are as clear to anyone. And why use that particular language other than to invoke the image and sympathy of a soldier or police officer dying while on the job?
Not To Mention
There’s a wall of badges in the Chicago Fire Academy of fellow firemen who died in the Line Of Duty. That phrase is NOT reserved for those two groups you mention. Now stop it. Stop it right now!
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Who gives an F
People are so uptight these days – guy just lost his life at an Angels’ game and you are bitching about semantics.
No Crying in Baseball?!? How 'Bout No Hating in Baseball!
It’s baseball, for pete’s sake! We’re here to have fun!
I can’t stand the atmosphere when the Dodgers, Red Sox and Yankees are in town – so many haters (although I’ll boo for Tex & CC like the rest of you when they come to town)! But why taunt & antagonize the oppoing teams’ fans? We’re all supposed to be having fun and enjoying watching our favorite players do their thing!
I went to a Spring Training game last month and some blowhard tried to loudly “discuss” politics. He was totally hateful – but thank God someone told him to pipe down!
I love this sport! Let’s keep it fun!
I am just curious as to what he said to the guy who punched him in the face
That is to say, what started it. Was this just random Roid Beer Rage, or was this something that had been going on between them the entire game? Did they know each other before? Was the guy who died an asshole during the game and caused the two guys to snap, or was it, as it appears, the reverse?
Chicago. Where the Dead can Vote. Where the Voters of Tomorrow are found in the Obituaries of Today.
Anyone else notice how Violent this American culture is?
I just read this, and it makes me feel sick.
When is enough enough???
Can we as a nation recognize how sick we are? How so much violence is woven into the everyday life of so many of us. Manifesting itself into this.
What does it matter who said what to who? That is missing the reality of a life gone, and another 2 or 3 that will most likely be spending years in jail.
I want to take my family to a game and have fun and feel safe.
And guess what? We as Angel’s fans have now sunk to the bottom of baseball fans.
When was the last time someone was murdered at Fenway?

We're not the only team to have had a fan killed at a game/near the stadium following a game
not by a long shot.
Nevermind that the actions of one or two (drunk) assholes has absolutely zero relation to any fanbase at all, and such a parallel is utterly pointless to draw.

I don't foresee
that a parallel will be drawn between the actions of these couple of thugs and the entire Angels fanbase anymore than all Dodgers fans are associated with the fan killed in the parking lot following a Dodgers/Giants game some years back. And THAT killing was undoubtedly more deliberate, as it involved a gun.

As an A's fan I come here in peace
To let all fans of baseball know my heart goes out to those who were affected tonight.
If this was initiated by the rivalry I am sorry, but regardless, I hope we all learn from this and realize that we all share a love for a game that should all stop at some point. RIP Brian Powers…
REST IN PEACE BROTHER - ANAHEIM STRONG - WE MISS YOU!!!
BRIAN POWERS WAS A GOOD MAN AND AND A GREAT FRIEND, HE WAS ALWAYS QUICK WITH A JOKE AND READY WITH A LAUGH. I AM DEEPLY SADDENED BY THE EVENTS THAT TOOK PLACE AT THE STADIUM MONDAY NIGHT IT WAS A FREAK ACCIDENT AND A TRAGEDY. BELIEVE ME, THIS MAN WAS TOUGH. I WILL MISS HIM FOR A LONG TIME TO COME, BUT THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE SAID TO EXPRESS THE LEVEL OF SORROW HIS FAMILY NOW DEALS WITH. MAY GOD BLESS THEM AND GIVE THEM THE STRENGTH TO CARRY ON THROUGH THESE DIFFICULT TIMES.
I CAN’T EVEN WALK BY THE PLACE WHERE IT HAPPENED WITHOUT SEEING HIM THERE, I THINK IT WILL JUST ALWAYS BE THAT WAY FOR ME. A TRIBUTE IS DEFINATELY IN NEED, I THINK SOMETHING PRIVATE FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY WOULD BE BEST. THE ANGELS ARE ON THE ROAD NEXT WEEK AND ONE EVENING ON THE BUD PATIO IN REMEMBRANCE OF BRIAN WOULD BE THE LEAST THAT COULD BE DONE.
TO ALL OF US WHO KNEW BRIAN, WE WERE BLESSED TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BE A PART OF HIS LIFE AND TO HAVE HIM BE A PART OF OURS. OUR FALLEN FATHERS, BROTHERS, AND SONS WILL WELCOME HIM WARMLY INTO THEIR HALLS WHERE HE MAY REST ENTERNALLY FREE FROM THE ANGUISH OF THIS WORLD.
BRIAN, YOU LIVE ON IN THE MEMORY AND HEARTS OF THOSE YOU SO SUDDENLY LEFT BEHIND.
I’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE HOMIE, TILL THEN WE LOVE YOU BIG DOG…
wanna know what kinda person he was...

Anaheim Stadium
I have been in that ballpark several hundred times over the years, often as a fan of the visiting team. More often, just as a baseball fan. I have respected the players on the team and enjoyed many good times there, across the street at The Catch and other places in the area. The tragic death of this fan is of course something nobody wanted to see. But I have to make some comments here that I think need to be said.
Over the years, I have been assaulted several times by fans simply because of a hat or shirt I was wearing. I once had three “fans” of the Angels telling me to go back to New York and F…. my mother. I can honestly say that several times, I felt that I was in physical danger. The last straw there was with a group of Angel fans who were sitting near the right field foul pole. There were two little kids wearing Yankee pinstripes. I’m talking about four or five year old kids, you know. With the pinstriped shirt and pants, hats, even little cleats. The Angel fans were pelting peanut shells, ice cubes, cups and whatever at these kids. KIDS. Get it? The parents were petrified for their safety and left to the howls and taunting of the Angel “fans.” It was one of the worst displays of sportsmanship I have ever seen. Fortunately for those people, those were not MY kids.
Angel fans take great pride in what they percieve to be the “classy” nature with which they carry themselves. I know that for the most part, that is probably true. But make no mistake. I’ve been in ballparks all over the country. I’m here to tell you that the bad fans in Anaheim are as bad or worse than any fans I have seen anywhere.
This is a terrible thing for this fan. I dont know him. I dont know who started what. And I dont care. You dont go to a game expecting not to make it home over something this stupid. In the early 2000’s, a fan was killed in the parking lot there. The big Disney Machine had that tucked on the back pages and the story never really broke nationally. I stopped going to Anaheim stadium after the incident with the kids. Some idiots are just not worth the effort.
There are great fans and there are fools. Anaheim does not have the exclusive on the great ones, and is not short in number on the fools.
Thanks. We needed this today.

There was a book written years ago by a survivor of Nazi concentration camps...
…the writer was Viktor Frankl, and the book is titled “Man’s Search For Meaning”. In the book he provided an observation that has stuck with me since I read the book…
“…humanity is divided into 2 races, the decent and the indecent”.
Since reading that book – especially in the context of the conditions he describes in the book – I have seen humanity in a similar light. It is unfortunate to acknowledge, but there are Angel fans – and in fact people of all colors and stripes – that are on the side of the indecent. The behavior you describe above (if true…I have no reason to doubt you) is simply appalling. It’s truly indecent behavior. I can only add this is not representive of most Angel fans.
Also – FWIW – My wife, daughter and I attended a game at Yankee Stadium a year ago, even taking the subway to the game. I wore my Angels cap (though the game was actually against the Rays). We encountered a few “wise guys” on the subway but most of the New Yorkers we encountered were genial, and some were very interested in the Angels…quite knowledgable too. Overall a very decent experience.
On this day, I hope we all learn how to be a bit more decent toward one another.
Humanity
Nice post softball. That’s sort of the point I was making. People are divided into the decent and indecent. Perhaps there are a few stops inbetween. I’ve met my share of both in many of the ballparks around the country. There are jackasses in the Bronx, and I’ve called them out for it. There are certainly jackasses in Anaheim. The coast, the culture, the team…none of that defines who is what. They just are. Being a fan of a team has become a combat zone. I for one cant get into that. There is a fine line between good natured ribbing and combat. This poor guy either got caught in the crossfire, or perhaps crossed the line himself. We may never know. In the final analysis, it really doesnt matter. It’s a tragedy either way.
We could probably split hairs, but...
1) I think we are in general agreement.
2) Ihave no desire for quibbling after wat occured

Fan dies after fight at Angels game
11:54 AM | April 8, 2009
Police are searching for details about a fight at Angels Stadium on Monday night that led to the death of a Buena Park man.
About 8:45 p.m. Monday, as crowds were leaving the stadium after the Angels’ opening-day game against the Oakland As, witnesses saw 27-year-old Brian Powers fighting with another man near a stairwell in the right-field pavilion, according to the Anaheim Police Department.
During the fight, witnesses said, a third man approached Powers from behind and punched him in the head, making him fall and strike his head on a concrete step. Powers was rushed to UC Irvine Medical Center, where he was pronounced brain dead around midnight Tuesday, said Anaheim Police Sgt. Rick Martinez.
“We’re asking the public’s help to find out what the fight was about,” Martinez said.
The male suspects, who fled before police arrived, are described as being between 25-30 years old with goatees. Police are reviewing security videos that may have captured the attack. Witnesses are asked to call Anaheim police at (714) 765-1944.
