Around SBN: Josh Hamilton's Unique Public Statement On His Addiction

The Loss of Nick Adenhart

In 1978, Lyman Bostock was murdered, a few days before the end of the 1978 baseball season. He had only been with the Angels that season, but the pain for this fan was as real as if he had lived in our house... because in a way he had...

All the moments in which he had excelled had occurred in our house, the television light filling the room, the sound of the radio as much a part of a summer night as the cacophony of your brothers and sisters bursting through the front door just back from a late day at the beach.

These players we will never know are family, we know the illusion of them better than we know some of our own kin. We still tell stories about the time they did this great feat or that terrible blunder as if those curveballs and errors happened in the backyard.

So we had another guest in our house last night, he had just joined the family and we were excited to have him. These kids are so fantastic to have over in the living room, the game taking all of our attention except for a dinner break while they keep playing. It is always a quick run back to see how they are doing.

But a tragedy means he will never be back at our house, at your house, across the homes of this sprawling, tangled neighborhood, this nation, the world even as this sport we love grows in our hearts and imagination. He had an open invitation from every fan in every home, and that invite was a manifestation of the love and hope and competitive drive in each of us. We are sports fans because it allows us to spend time with the absolute best in their prime.

But all the love in world can’t get him to come over and keep you company on the couch, in the car, on the computer. All the hope for a miracle, the longing for a different outcome and the need for tomorrow to get here today are gone. For more than thirty years now, some of us have wondered how many diamonds would have been on that 1979 World Series ring on Lyman’s fourth finger, if Mike Miley would have had to add on to the den to mount all of his gold gloves, if Minnie Rojas would have sent the glove he wore when he saved some Game 7 to Cooperstown. Would Donnie Moore have made a great coach? A broadcaster?

All the love and longing in the world and the imagination cannot give us the firm satisfaction that a W does. We are just left wondering... minds wandering and wondering forever. I don’t know who will win the 2010, ‘11 and ‘12 American League Cy Young awards, but for the rest of my life I will always have a nagging feeling that they would have belonged to Nick Adenhart and that he would have won them right here in my living room. Right here I tell you.

Today has been I day I will never forget.

This morning I attended the funeral of a friend of mine who just lost a 5 year battle to cancer. He was 24 years old. After the funeral my roomates and I went to grab a bite to eat and talk about Nate’s life. He had been a teammate of my roomate’s on the 2000 ND state champion baseball team. Just as we sat down I looked up at the television and saw the news.

RIP Nick. You will be missed.

Nice post Flashfire

A photo means so much and no matter what team you root for, it is like one big baseball family.

I was watching him on TV after the game and thought at the time that he was very composed and even though I am an A’s fan, I thought he deserved the win last night.

I like your last line there and we can all say he is in a better place. I really feel bad for his family and friends because it’s so final.

I am happy they did not play the final game. That just would not have been the thing to do. No one would have their heart in the game and I quite honestly for once, would not have wanted the Angels to lose had they played it.

Good Luck guys, you have an Angel looking over you form here on out.

I have no words to express my sadness. I feel for his family, for the Angels family, for all Angels fans, and all fans of baseball. that kid had such a bright future and this is a loss to the entire baseball community. I watched the game last night and could not stop thinking about how great a pitcher he was going to become. Someone Needs to Suggest This

I think that if they offered a Memorial Shirt in addition to the standard shirts and Jerseys and tied that in with a Charity that there should be a very strong response. Based on the outrage and overall support that we have seen already, I think it would be very popular and really help to try and find something positive out of a tragedy like this.

Very Well Said

I’ve been an Angel fan since the 70’s. I remember listening to most of the games on the radio, and going to the BIG A and loving the atmosphere, even in those less than desirable seasons. Of all the professional sports out there, baseball is the greatest and the Angels are the only team I’ve supported. Unfortunately, I live in Scotland at the moment and haven’t been able to follow the Angels as I would like, but I look up box scores everyday and this is just a shocking story to come home to after work. This blog is one of the best written that I’ve read in a long time….excellent.

I attended a game about 3 years ago with my son. He's a year older than Nick.

After going through the turnstiles, we happened upon a booth where some minor leaguers were signing autographs. One of the signers was Nick Adenhart.
At that time, he was coming off of surgery, and – IIRC – pitching for the Quakes.
My son went up to get his autograph. All I can report is that we was a kind person…no ego whatsoever. Not long after signing, he got up from behind the table and just started mingling and talking with some other fans…not that many…most didn’t know who he was (including me at the time). All I can report is that he was a kind person…happy and carefree. A regular guy. No big ego.

A couple of weeks ago, I watched him pitch in ST. I kept thinking…I am so happy this guy is an Angel! He was looking really good. He has all the tools…what a bright future.

What I can say right now

beyond all the heartbreak, and sadness that comes with the territory is that I’m truly glad that that stupid piece of shit driver fled the scene so I can watch him spend the rest of his life in prison.

Nick was one of my favorite prospects from the moment we drafted him. I met and shook hands with him back in Spring Training ‘08, and have his autograph on a ball that sits on my desk. I’ll best remember him, I think, as the first player I ever realized the Angels had that was younger than myself. I remember seeing his birthday and thinking “holy crap, this guy is gonna take a mound one day and make me feel old.” That, of course, makes this loss sting all the more harshly. Not just because we’ve lost an immense talent and a great young man, but because I had long thought about watching Nick come up through the system, and mature into a staff ace all at the same age as myself.

And then I remember watching the game last night. Watching him work his way in and out of trouble all night, with the composure of a veteran. And I remember the last time I guess I “saw” him alive, when the camera was on him between the 6th and 7th innings, knowing he wasn’t coming out for the next inning and just thinking how great it was to see such a great talent take the next step forward, and how awesome it was for him to (probably) pick up the win for his effort. And now that’s all ruined by, of all people, another kid younger than myself.

It's beyond weird how I watched him walk into the clubhouse after the sixth

You never wonder “hey, wonder if he’s ever gonna walk out of that door again.”

but there is more than a small part of me that would like to see a level of suffering for him that the justice system could never give, even if I would never be the one to act on it.

22 years isn’t nearly enough punishment for a guy like this. 2 DUIs, a suspended license, and he’s still on the road, killing people. He robbed three people, our boy included, of 50+ years each. No way he should be back on the streets in his fucking 40s.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Apr 9, 2009 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions

It should be a slam dunk for 2nd degree murder (3 reasons)

1. Top reason: Because of prior DUI conviction, he has DUI classes, etc. , the DA can prove that he knew that driving drunk was putting the public in danger of death. I know it sounds stupid, of course he knew that driving drunk was putting people in danger, but that is the key…the intent…that has to be proven by the DA.

2. Excessive speed – look at the crash pictures

3. He ran from the scene – shows lack of remorse and evidence that he knew he f’ed up

SEE YA….15 to life buddy

By the way, I know about 2nd degree murder cases in DUI accidents fairly intimately. I have had to deal with it in my personal life.

by swiss mcgee on Apr 9, 2009 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

My experience with it

is limited to criminal law classes I’ve taken in college and such. And more and more states have been pushing in recent years to make it even easier to bring 2nd degree murder charges against drunk drivers. As they should.

Frankly, his prior convictions should be nothing more than icing on the cake. I don’t think we should even require such a thing for 2nd degree murder. There isn’t a person in the country that doesn’t know the consequence of such action.

It better be 15-life PER death.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Apr 9, 2009 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, his previous convictions wouldn't be determinative

From what I understand, he was clearly reckless. The standard for reckless murder is typically conduct that manifests an extreme disregard for the value of human life. Getting behind the wheel drunk and tearing around town at 75-80 MPH with no regard for lights, intersections, etc., regardless of prior convictions, should be more than enough to show that he was reckless. I don’t know exactly what standard CA law applies, but there should be a slam dunk in this case.

I don’t know how plea bargaining would mitigate this down, but not matter how you slice it he’s going to jail for a long, long time. That it was 3 people should help solidify that—there should and probably will be one count on each charge for each person killed. That’s what plea bargaining might do for him, though—might take away some of charges in regard to some of the people killed, unfortunately most likely including Nick—since he wasn’t driving the impacted car—but who knows?

I would like to see some compassion in most of these cases for the driver—after all, he will be living for the rest of his life with the knowledge that he killed 3, maybe 4, people, and in many respects that is most likely going to be extremely punishing in and of itself—but this case involves such extreme recklessness and extreme disregard for the value of human life and for the law that it makes it difficult to justify giving this guy a ton of leniency. But that’s not for us to decide, in more ways than one.

Compassion for the a drunk driver that kills anyone is a joke. Thats the problem with this country we think his guilt is enough, but if you leave this piece of shit on the street he would do it again tomorrow. Living with guilt is not nearly enough, he should only be alive long enough to see the needle going in his arm.

This goes for every other drunk driving piece of trash out there, you don’t get to walk around shooting at people and get slaps on the wrist, why should people who drive drunk get the chance to try to kill again?

I believe clutch is a decent person and sees the world through decent eyes. So, his natural reaction – since he has a conscience – is that this driver will "suffer" from the painful vision of the dead dancing through his conscience.
Unfortunately, there is a small but significant percentage of humanity that that has no conscience and no empathy for others. Remember Richard Spect? He murdered 5 nursing students in a most horrific manner. His conscience was so "troubled" he videotaped himself in prison having sex, doing drugs, and generally having a great time. On one of his bootleg videos, he was asked by his "partner" if he regretted the murders. His response? Well, I don’t want to repeat it here…not at this time, and not in this thread. I will only say that it was not consistent with a decent man with an empathetic soul.
And so it goes…people like clutch have the best of intentions. Clutch means no harm, and in fact looks to "help" us and others. He represents the general legal – and sometimes moral – thinking of our times…these are really good souls that have somehow been led astray by their life circumstances (poverty, abuse, addiction, etc). Yes, they deserve punishment for their crimes, but they also deserve our compassion.
And the indecent, conscienceless souls – like Pol Pot, Cory Stayner, Mohamed Atta, Tim McVeigh, Eric Harris, Dylan Klebold, Josef Goebbels, Saddam Hussein, and so many others whose own compassions extends only to the space they occupy – look at the decent in their midst and think, what fools, what cowardly stupid fools.
We seek compassion, they seek their pleasure. Hope you don’t get in their way.

by sothball on Apr 9, 2009 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Allow me to clarify

I’ll post this below, too, since it probably won’t get read up here.

I am not in any way, shape, or form suggesting that the driver be given leniency in his sentence. I am saying that given the nature of the judicial system, he probably will somehow manage to strike a plea bargain and get his sentence reduced.

What SHOULD happen is he SHOULD be hit with three charges of second degree murder, three charges of reckless endangerment, three charges of felony hit and run, DUI, driving without a license AND EVERYTHING THAT GOES WITH IT.

He should be in prison for the rest of his life.

What I am disagreeing with is the sentiment that this guy should “rot in Hell,” be tortured/executed/etc.

It is, in fact, possible to desire the correct and appropriate justice that hopefully will be most duly meted out, while feeling some degree of compassion for the fact that this guy’s idiotic, and perhaps conscience-less, decision has cost him his life, too.

Again, not that he should get a get out of jail free card. No matter how you slice it, at the end of the day he took three lives. Three lives that were only just beginning, that will never get to realize their full potential, that will never get to experience the world as they should have. Whose parents and family and friends have had their sons and daughter ripped from them well before their time should have come.

He'll get what he deserves? Where? When? How?

What earthly punishment can we possibly dispense that could ever make up for the lives detroyed or forever altered? A lifetime in jail will make up for what he has done? BULLSHIT.

10 years from now, this bastard will likelly be pumping iron, eating 3 meals a day, laughing and joking with his other prison “homeys”, checking out girlie magazines, receiving conjugal visits, reading books, watching TV, and a whole host of other human activities. Meanwhile, Nick Adenhart and the other victims will be a fading memory of “what might have been”.
Please…don’t think for a moment we can dispense “justice”. We can’t even come close.

There isn’t an inexhaustible supply of any human qualities or values…

…that includes compassion. If you spend compassion on Andrew Gallo, you have that much less to spend on others far more deserving.

Assuming you live in an urban/sub-urban area, I bet within a 5 mile radius of your home, I could find THOUSANDS of people far more deserving of compassion that are currently receiving NONE of your sympathies. And these are people that have paid their taxes, fought in wars, volunteered their services and generally carried the burdens society has placed upon them without complaining, whining, or asking for favors.

So you really want to show compassion? Volunteer some time at a senior center. Mentor a child struggling with their homework. Donate blood. Do you have any idea how low the blood banks are at this time? Make a donation to Habitat for Humanity. Help a friend through AA or Narcanon. And once you are done helping all of those within your 5 mile circle, if you still have compassion to spend on the likes of Andrew Gallo, go for it.

Well

I understand where you’re coming from. I’ve done many of the things you mentioned. I do now live in an urban area, and you’re right that there are thousands of more deserving people all around us. But to suggest that there is a fundamental limit to the amount of empathy or compassion of which we are capable just doesn’t strike me as right. Especially this particluar weekend.

But you didn’t make a call to compassion for those thousands. Instead, you spent your effort asking for compassion toward an individual far more deserving of contempt…and then people wonder why the world seems upside down.
I’m not surprised…this is the result of our “educational” system.
Your views will likely prevail…Andrew Gallo will likely be the recipient of compassion long before – if ever – it is dispensed to the deserving thousands.

I'm not going to argue with you

And am dropping after this.

You and I are 99% on the same page. But you have misread and misinterpreted what I wrote.

Read “allow me to clarify” again, for where I stand. I never said give Gallo sympathy. I never said let him off. I am not suggesting we have him over for tea. I am not suggesting we give him a hug and say it’s all going to be all right.

No. What he did on Wednesday night is so callous, so cruel, so idiotic, and so depraved that if he sits in a cell the rest of his life, even that won’t be enough. He deserves to be incarcerated for the rest of his life, even if that means 100 years (w/ modern medicine, you never know). That is the punishment he deserves for what he did. I have faith in the law and our justice system that it will happen—it cannot happen any other way. There is absolutely no one—no one—who would ever advocate for this guy getting off.

The only thing I am suggesting is that it is also tragic that through his own stupidity and ignorance this guy has also thrown his life away. All I wanted to point out was that dehumanization is perhaps not the right tack, as angry as we all are. Anger, yes. Grief and sadness, yes.

I posted on the A's board

that I used to drink and drive alot.

In the 80’s I drove home from The Starting Gate just across from the Los Alamitos racetrack at 2:30 a.m and was pretty hammered. I fell asleep for about 20 seconds and hit the center divider of the 405 Freeway at Carson and blew both left side tires out and lost control and happened to go down the off ramp. There were no other cars around. THANK GOD. That scarred me shitless and I never drank and drove a car again after that. In fact due to problems with pills and booze I have not drank since 1998.

I thanked God that night I did not kill anyone and I cringe now everytime I read that someone does, especially this time. Over the course of time I must have driven drunk about 200 times. I got one DUI and had that one near miss. I also got pulled over by Cypress Police completely hammered and they let me drive home because I was two blocks from my house and they saw I was from another country when I gave them my passport as ID. They followed me home and made sure I went inside. This was before I had the crash on the 405.

I paid for Taxi’s for me and for my friends who were too stupid to drive and had no problem laying out a few extra dollars to ensure safety. And the time I did get my DUI, I was granted a work license which enable me to drive to and from work and anywhere the railroad ran along side the highway as I worked as a switchman. I never drove for any other purpose.

This clown did not learn his lesson from his 1st DUI and I imagine he will spend at least 45 years in prison if he gets charged and convicted of second degree murder. I do feel sorry for his family but he made a decision to drive while drunk and being suspended and will have to pay the price.

If he leaves prison in anything but a coffin, he got off too easy, no matter how many days it takes for him to reach that day.

I just posted the other day at the end of my birthday party

that I was drunk. Which represents, I believe, the 6th or 7th time in my life. None before 21, either. Not a big fan of the stuff. And I never go out and do it, because I don’t want to rely on someone else to take me home.

I had a couple of friends here with me, and one of them almost left that night when I thought he was drunk. He didn’t get his keys back until the next morning. Even as a drunk, I have the common sense not to do this kind of stupid shit, so you know no one else has an excuse, either.

This has made me reconsider ever doing it again, at all.

Spot on Rev

Myself and MattUK have followed the Angels from England for several years, and are happy to suffer through the time difference to watch the players go out day after day to represent their team (aka OUR team) What makes the sleep deprivation worthwhile is seeing games like last night where a young prospect gets a chance to prove themselves and shine like a true star.

It was incredible to think how much he had already achieved at the age of 22 (i’m 24) – and i’m sure he was an inspiration to many young baseball players.

So from ‘across the pond’ our heartfelt condolences go out to Nick’s family, friends, teammates and to all others who are feeling the loss of a talented young man. Also to all those affected by the loss of the other victims.

May the proper justice be done

We've had too many days like this over the years....

From the LA Times:

It is almost unfathomable that any one team, especially an expansion club that has only been around half as long as most major league teams, could experience so much pain and agony through the years. This is just part of the depressing list:

— ln 1968, relief pitcher Minnie Rojas was permanently paralyzed and his wife and three children were killed in an off-season car accident.

— In 1972, Chico Ruiz, a 33-year-old utility infielder, died in a car accident.

— 1974, Bruce Heinbechner, a promising, young, left-handed pitching prospect not unlike the right-handed Adenhart, was killed in a springtime car crash.

— In 1977, 23-year-old shortstop Mike Miley, another top prospect, was killed in a preseason car accident.

— In 1978, All-Star outfielder Lyman Bostock was driving in a car in Gary, Ind., stopped at a traffic light, when someone in another car shot and killed him.

— In 1985, the two-year-old son of pitcher John Candelaria died after being in a coma for months following a swimming pool accident at his home.

— In 1989, three years after throwing the fateful pitch that Dave Henderson hit for the ninth-inning home run, which turned the ALCS in Boston’s favor, reliever Donnie Moore shot his wife, seriously injuring her, and then killed himself.

— In 1992, the Angels team bus, traveling from Yankee Stadium to Baltimore, careened off the New Jersey Turnpike, injuring several members of the club, including Manager Buck Rodgers, who was hurt the worst.

Bruce Heinbechner...

… was to have been traded to the Cubs (along with Andy Hassler) in the 1973-74 offseason for Ron Santo. Santo became the first player to invoke his 10-and-5 rights and vetoed the deal; he was eventually traded to the White Sox.

Heinbechner was killed in a car crash on his way driving to Angels spring training in Palm Springs. He was, at the time, a prospect not unlike Nick Adenhart.

Again, my condolences to the Angels family on today’s senseless tragedy, from this Cubs fan.

i don't know if this has been addressed yet but...

considering this tragedy and the death of the fan on opening night and both cases have alcohol involved, the stadium and organization should do something about alcohol sales/consumption at the games. cut off sales earlier or restrict the amount of stands that sell alcohol which would lead to long lines and discourage alcohol consumption. now i like a beer at a game, MAYBE two but i could easily do without a brew at a game.

by thejd on Apr 9, 2009 2:04 PM PDT reply actions

I agree ...

But we don’t really know if the driver of the minivan was at the game, let alone drinking at the game, and considering that the accident happened a good 2 hours after the end of the game – he was probably off getting wasted somewhere else.

But yes, I’ve seen way too many drunken fights or even nasty words thrown around by people way too under the influence. We won’t take our 3 year old son to series’ with certain teams because we know that the alcoholic-idiot level will be too high.

I'm not superstitious, but I'm a little stitious.

by lightupthehalo on Apr 9, 2009 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

i think many of the "wasted" fans are drinking well before they get to the game.

restricting alcohol sales at the game won’t change anything. in fact, it may have the opposite result. people may get angry and/or feel compelled to drink more before they go to the game.

i would agree with a single game non-alcoholic event. outside of that, the best way to address the problem, in my opinion, is by promoting responsibility and supporting organizations like MADD.

Almost exactly a year ago, my girlfriend, cousin, and friend of 15 years were involved in a car crash that was very close to being as tragic as this one. This brought back memories that I never wanted to relive. I feel for the families of the victims, and my heart aches for them.

I had the pleasure of meeting Nick three times in the past couple of years. Twice when he was pitching in Triple-A for the Salt Lake City Bees, and once less than a month ago during spring training. He was always very respectful, seemed like a genuinely nice guy, and gladly signed autographs for anyone who asked.

Rec'd from a Braves fan.

Pardon my rambling…I posted in the last thread, and have been lurking all day. Couldn’t get much work done.

I paid close attention to Nick this spring because I had read everything that BP and BA had to say about the guy and was impressed. After I heard he made the rotation I gathered him up in any fantasy I could, and was giddy after checking the boxscore last night before I left work. Hearing about this was a gut punch this morning, cause I was really excited for the kid’s future after finally see him in action last night. I know it doesn’t mean much, but if there are six scoreless innings that I remember at the end of the year…it’ll be his six.

Stay strong guys, you’ll all be in my thoughts…certainly makes the Braves bullpen meltdown last night look pretty god damn meaningless.

You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.

I wanted to share my condolences with the Angels community and the family and friends of Nick. I’m an A’s fan who has been too damn busy to take time out to follow the games so far this season. I regret I will no longer be able to see this man pitch and wonder what was so important last night that I couldn’t follow the game. I’m also grateful for these sites where we can come together to laugh, cry, and share our love of the game. I hope his family and friends can find some solace in the warm words that have been written here today. This just breaks my heart……..

Utterly Numb

I checked my cell this morning and got a txt from a friend. I figured it was about going to the game tonight. After reading that there was a multi-fatality accident involving Nick Adenhart, I went online to see if it was true and found nothing but a generic paragraph describing an accident in Fullerton. I felt helpless as there was nothing I could find that could confirm or deny those words. Not until I was on my way to work did I hear it was true and that Nick had passed. I’ve been on the verge of tears since.

My heart goes out to the families and friends whose loved ones were lost this morning in this awful tragedy.

I know we are all, as Angel fans, saddened by this tragedy but I have visited many websites today and it was amazing for me to see how many people who weren’t Angel fans so saddened by this as well.

The Angels just lost a 22 year old future star today and the game of baseball lost an extremely promising performer.

Cards fan here

Just wanted to stop in and give my best wishes to the family, organization and you guys. If anybody knows about losing pitchers mid-season, it’s us. It’s a terrible sinking feeling. As terrible as it is to think, much less say, it really sucks that it was a kid with such promise, too. Obviously baseball takes a back seat to the life that was lost, but this still leaves a hole in the organization, both emotionally and plugging in a great player into the rotation. I’m terribly sorry for you guys’ loss. Let’s root for the Halos to honor Nick by playing hard every game, win or lose. Best of luck to the organization in filling the void that has been left.

that really helped me through the death of one of my friends unexpectedly when he was 20. I am a rangers fan and I am here to offer my condolences. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.

I think of you often
and make no outward show,
But what it means to lose you,
no one will ever know
You wished no one farewell,
not even said good-bye,
You were gone before I knew it,
and only God knows why.
You are not forgotten
nor will you ever be,
As long as life and memories last,
I will remember thee.
To some you may be forgotten,
to others a part of the past,
But to me who loved you dearly,
your memories will always last.
Nothing can be more beautiful
than the memories I have of you.
To me, you were someone special,
God must have thought so too!
If tears could build a staircase
and memories a lane,
I would walk all the way to Heaven,
and bring you back again.

As a So. Cal. native, I vividly recall that awful night when Lyman Bostock was killed. I can remember how Bostock wanted to give his first month’s salary back to Mr. Autry after he was nearly 0 for April.
And while I’ve been 3,000 miles away from home for nearly 30 years, this new tragedy brought back those long-ago days.
I thought about Mike Miley. I remembered Bobby Valentine destroying his leg and career chasing that home run hit by Dick Green.

When my brother texted me and asked if I had heard what happened, I thought maybe it was an injury or something. Man it floored me to come here and read the news.

To hell with how talented the guy was, I just cant understand how these three people, (and keep Jon Wilhite in your prayers) who were so young and had so much life left to live could be taken from their family’s and friends by a piece of human garbage. I am still numb

I have been numb all day. Could not focus in class, and had to just bail on last couple because I just wasnt there. Couldnt focus at work, and had to leave early. I have never enjoyed the month of April because anyone who I have lost that was close to me has passed in April. Now Nick’s death…no murder…just adds insult to injury.

The loss of life at such a young age is never a good thing. Nick was the same age as I was, and this is a big reminder of humanity’s own mortality. It is a simple fact of life that we forget sometimes.

Maybe it wasn’t a personal relationship you shared with Nick, like his family and the Angels organization as a whole, who are in everyone’s prayers right now. Obviously, every baseball fan was shocked and saddened by this; but it has to be 1000 times harder for you Angels fans. I really just wanted to offer my sympathy to you guys, even though I really can’t say I know what you’re going through…. Of course, I think of all the families who’s sons or daughters never made it home last night. But you guys just had a major tragedy meet your team. As a Braves fan, I thought of our young pitcher who we adore, Tommy Hanson… and couldn’t help but think that with Nick, you guys lost your Tommy today.

I hope my thoughts weren’t too disorganized there. This is still something that just upsets me to no end, because people should never get behind the wheel of a car intoxicated. I’m only 20, but one thing I know is that a parent should never have to bury their child.

Just Lost

Today was more difficult that I could have ever imagined, so hard to get anything done today, just sat at work hazy for the most part. This is truly such a great loss. I reiterate what most of us are saying here, that our players are more than just that, they are like family. To see us lose one of our own and at such a young age is so hard to grasp. I was there at the game last night and was just so proud of what he accomplished, as I was keeping score I couldn’t believe what he was doing on the mound. Just an amazing outing.

This week I also lost an aunt to cancer, and i just am completely lost, i don’t know which way is up. I haven’t really let it sink in that I will never see her again, and then to lose Nick on top of this just broke me.

Just so tragic…

I'm a Giants fan, but I wanted to stop by.

Ever since the 2002 World Series, I’ve always bitterly dislike the Angels, and rooted against them. This year, however, I will be pulling for them, because it is what Nick would have wanted. I’ve read a lot about him, and in a strange sort of way, I felt connected to him. I’ve always liked promising young pitches, and Nick was no exception. His death is a tragedy, and is rightfully being received as one.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Angels organization. Today, Joey Martinez, a young Giants reliever, was hit in the head by a linedrive, and went down with blood pouring from the wound. While he ultimately walked off of the field, it put some perspective on what Angels fans must be feeling right now. My heart was in my throat, and I was saying, “No, no, no” when I saw the injury happen, and it was merely a head wound, not a death. I say this not to compare my experience to yours, but it is a similar, but thankfully less severe feeling.

God Bless Nick, may he find a better place.

I work for the Cardinals AA minor league team in Springfield MO, and tonight was our opening night. Before the game, the announcer told of the tradgedy and said that Nick had pitched here for the Arkansas Travelers on his way to the majors. Then they asked for a moment of silence. Men took their hats off and people bowed their heads. It was such a sweet and classy thing for the orginization to do. It shows that this affects everyone. Even people at a minor league game in Missouri. I just wanted to share this with all of you.

What a heartless, thoughtless comment!!!

Religion provides comfort to billions of people around the world during times of grief and sadness. Where is your sense of compassion?
Instead of dumping a plie of manure on the beliefs of Hapyorange, how about offering the secular version of a prayer for those attempting to deal with the depths of thier despair?

by sothball on Apr 10, 2009 7:25 AM PDT up reply actions

How in the hell does that insult you or your beliefs?

He didn’t write “…Christianity being shown to the exclusion of all others...”. That’s Hapyorange’s view, and it is shared by others visiting the site…he is expressing a commonality with some others, not all others! Does something this obvious need to be stated? He didn’t even HINT that you are somehow a lesser human being if you don’t agree. He is simply reaching out and finding comfort in this time of despair from those that share his religious views.

Are you truly that insecure in your own beliefs? How’s this…why don’t you ask Hapyorange if he would welcome other expressions of sympathy from other faiths/non-faiths BEFORE you empty the manure truck?

If your so concerned about insults, how about taking jjackflash’s to task for his/her truly insulting and dismissive comment about God/gods/religion in general – “…whatever invisible man you believe in…”?

A Red Sox fan paying respect

As a member of Red Sox Nation and one-time resident of Anaheim(‘99-’04) back during their WS year, I just want to offer my deepest condolences, pay my respect, and offer thoughts and prayers to the Adenhart family, Angels organization and the Angel fans.

It’s always a tragic loss when a family loses someone, the way things happen, such as this horrible chain of events makes it a bit more tragic. A young guy finding success and then the MLB community losing him in such a short time.

I came to appreciate Angel fans when attending Angel games and the hearty rivalry between the Red Sox/Angels amongst friends and strangers while at the games. Angel fans are among the classiest in baseball.

Your loss is felt out here on the East Coast. R.I.P. Nick, and hold your heads high Angel fans, there is always a reason behind things (‘things happen for a reason’). What those reasons are, we will never know, but look back on the great things Nick achieved.

Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Last year I had the pleasure of sitting with many of you as Adenhart made his major league debut. A truly tragic loss that has brought the baseball world together. Keep Wilhite in your prayers, as I am. His cousin is a close friend and we can only hope that he recovers. To the Adenharts and the entire Angel community, my sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to you…

Nick Adenhart (Once an Angel, Always an Angel)

This is a tragedy in the game of baseball.
I hope his family finds peace along with the countless other individuals that knew him. At least his last start was a good one. The cancellation of the game was absolutely necessary, I can’t imagine going out to play a game knowing one of your closest friends was lost just hours earlier.

I almost broke into tears when I read this, absolutely devastating news.

I was going to go to the game tonight before this happened

I was going to watch Brett Anderson pitch. They had to cancel the game after this tragedy. I am sorry but as much of an A’s fan as I am, how could I root for the A"s in this instance. I sincerely hope that tomorrow’s game gives you a win for the team. Lives are so much more important that a game of baseball but if this can help the team and their fans by getting a special win tomorrow then go get em.

http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090409&content_id=4203490&vkey=news_oak&fext=.jsp&c_id=oak

A handful of A’s players were friendly with Adenhart, including Thursday’s scheduled starter, Brett Anderson, who knew Adenhart through USA Baseball. Several A’s played in the Minor Leagues against Adenhart, but nobody on the team was as close to Adenhart as was catcher Kurt Suzuki.

A teammate said Suzuki, who played with Adenhart for the U.S. Olympic Qualifying Team at a 2006 tournament in Cuba, was “absolutely crushed” by the news of his friend’s death. An A’s spokesman said Suzuki did not want to speak with the media on Thursday.

R.I.P. Nick Adenhart

I’m a huge hockey fan, and don’t usually pay much attention to baseball (even my beloved Angels) until the season is over. Today at work, a co-worker came up to me said her boyfriend was really bummed out. When she told me why, I had to run into the office check the Angels website to see if it was true. I was absolutely stunned by this terribly sad news! It was in the back of my mind all day. Periodically, when no one was looking, I went to different websites, pulling up articles about Nick, and sending them to my home email to keep. I didn’t start to cry until I sat here these last 45 minutes reading and absorbing all the posts, by Angels & non-Angels fans alike. The tears then came, and I’ve thought about how senseless this whole tragedy is. I hope that b*stard ROTS in prison, and I hope that he is FOREVER haunted by what he’s done. My deepest and most sincere heartfelt condolences go out to Nick’s family, the families of the other victims, the entire Angel Nation and fans everywhere of baseball. It’s always tragic when a promising career is cut short, especially in such a horrific manner. Those who knew and loved these young people have lost more than any words could ever express. Those of us that are truly fans of baseball, regardless of team, have been deprived of a potentially long and brilliant career. Normally my avatars for blog sites have something to do with my Anaheim Ducks, but in light of this situation, I too have put a photo of Nick on my profile. I truly hope that the Angels will make kind of commemorative shirt available that fans can get, with proceeds given to charity.

May God bless all the families involved, and may they in time come to know His peace.

Rest in Peace, Nick……you will truly be misssed!

Regards,

Regina J. Norton

Spring Training, 3/20/2008...

… Angels vs. Giants @ Tempe.

Nick Adenhart gets the start. I have my Baseball Prospectus with me and have zero clue who this kid is, so I look him up. Baseball Prospectus doesn’t do him justice as my own two eyes tell me he’s got electric stuff: great location on the fastball, brings it well into the 90s, and a solid breaking ball. Goes well into the game, makes hitters look foolish. Reminded me a little of seeing Mark Prior when he was at USC.

Text my buddy who works with the Angels, “That kid Adenhart is legit.”

Fast forward two months, mildly disappointed to see him struggle in the bigs and even more after he gets sent down. Know he’s still got great, great stuff — the difference is between the ears.

Fast forward again to last night. That EXACT SAME STUFF I saw just 13 months earlier is on display as I watch him on TV. Kid is legit, just as I thought he could be.

And in the matter of hours, hopes and dreams are dashed on the corner of Orangethorpe and Lemon.

Well said Rev

This is truly a tragedy for all baseball fans. I can’t believe I watched Nick Adenhart shut down my A’s for 6 innings last night to find out today that this had happened. I followed Nick’s career pretty closely the last 3 years or so after I got into prospecting, he was a talented young man who was taken from this world much too soon. Thoughts and prayers go out to his friends, family, teammates and fans.

I saw above someone mentioned a t-shirt dedicated to Nick. Maybe something where you sell them for $5 over the production cost with that $5 going to either a yet to be determined charity of choice from the Adenhart family, or something like MADD as has been mentioned before. I certainly don’t think that could possibly be looked at as trying to capitalize on this unfortunate incident, but as a way to remember Nick and to help some good come out of this tragedy. Just my thoughts on that.

You speak for us all, Rev.

After watching Nick pull the greatest Houdini act I’ve ever seen in my life, it’s hard to consider that he couldn’t escape his fate. As a catcher, I was impressed by his composure under pressure. After he breezed through the sixth, I turned to my friend — a lifelong baseball fan and expert of the game — and began a conversation about the future of the Angels. Specifically, about how Adenhart was poised to take control as the new face of the organization. We posited our firm belief in his contention for the 2010 Cy Young, like I’m sure most of you have by now.

Even though the sight of an Angels hat/jacket/jersey makes me cringe, we welcomed him into our home in Oakland. He was a rival sibling, but family nonetheless. We even checked the schedule to see if he would start at the Coliseum. It looked like we were going to miss him by one day all year, except for the first game of the August series in Anaheim.

Waking up to this news this morning was furthest from my mind during that conversation. That’s when all the “what ifs” hit you. What if Matthews had caught that ball, or if Figgins threw to first? What if Shields didn’t throw that wild pitch? What if Holliday had struck out? What if Courtney took a different way home? There’s a reason all of these lined up this way. I don’t know what God has in store for him now, but I can at least be happy knowing that Nick made it. He got to the Show. Almost everyone else in the baseball universe dreams of just one chance, and he proved he was worthy.

I’ll never get to see Nick start in the Coliseum. Or TelCo Park. Or Anaheim. Because of that, it wouldn’t feel right to miss the Memorial game. Even though I’ll never get a chance to see him pitch, I can still cheer for him and show my respect. I may be in full A’s gear, but I’ll be wearing my heart — “NJA #34” — on my sleeve.

Adenhart #34 - Rest well, Nick. You have a big start ahead of you.

Went Out On Top

I saw the news this morning before going to work. All the news said was a prominent person died in this horrible crash along with two others. Off to work I went, then a few hours later I turn on the radio and hear the news about Nick. Absolutely shocking and tragic. All day the news had me in a strange haze.

However I would like to put a different spin on all of this. Nick was blessed enough to purservere to get to last night’s start. He truly believed it was a special night and had asked his father to fly out to see him. He then proceded to pitch like a veteran and give us all a flash of what was to come. He made everyone around him proud. It couldn’t have been any better for him, his father, his family, team mates, and friends. He left the stadium with his good friends to celebrate. And that was how he left us all. Judging by those horrific photos, he never knew what hit him or had time to think about it or suffer. He went out as one of the happiest guys ever.

Don’t get me wrong, Nobody deserves to die that young, but for one moment, put yourself in his shoes Wednesday. Nick had one of the best days of his life. What a way to go.

Two Songs

Have been playing through my head all day.

One of them is A Day in the Life: “I read the news today, oh boy…” I won’t post the rest because the parallel is too gut-wrenching now.

The other is Empty Garden, written after a different senseless tragedy:

“And I’ve been callin’
But no one answers
And I’ve been calling
Hey, hey [Nicky]
Won’t you come out,
Won’t you come out to play?
Won’t you come out to play
In your empty garden?”

It’s going to take a long while to get over this. I feel foolish in some ways, not having known Nick personally, but it hits home so hard—maybe because I had a friend who was killed in the same way three years ago, maybe because I’ve driven through that intersection so many times, maybe because Nick’s future was cut so short so soon, maybe because it was so senseless, maybe because he’s barely two years younger than me—I don’t know. Maybe all of them.

Thanks again, Rev, for the beautiful post.

RIP Nick Adenhart.

I was able to attend the memorial site at Angel Stadium today and was actually interviewed by the channel 4 news and was fighting back tears the entire time. I got whatever I could from my Angels stash and brought it with me and signed the card stock prayer pages that were aligned by Nick’s jersey. It was a somber place but at the same time everyone was in the same state and it made it almost like a family gathering. It was just tremendous at the level of respect such a young player was receiving I am only 22 myself and I could only dream about what the next game and years to come held for him.

I’m a huge Angels fan from the Netherlands and this morning coming into work wanted to check the score from last night’s game, which is a daily routine of mine. When I saw the headline on SI.com I seriously thought I had misread or something, but then reality set in and my heart just skipped a beat and I felt like I couldn;t breathe for a second. I had just told my colleagues (who don’t care about baseball like most people out here) the day before that I had officially stopped worrying about this kid pitcher. With his injury and the high expectations, I was always quite reserved on him, but followed his MIL career intensely.

You spoke about the incident very well, Rev Halofan. Personally it reminded me of how things that bother us in sports and life can seem so insignificant in the bigger picture. Coming from an Orioles fans these are a lot of things. When I heard someone on the Scott and Anita show mention the other day that they went to his high school and many of his friends knew him personally and played with him as well as against him, his loss hit home. As I am sure it did for a lot of Maryland natives like my self and others. Seeing his agent Scott Boras weep also resonated these feelings greatly for me. Its evident he will be missed by many baseball fans alike and I hope his family and friends will find peace. May his family and friends as well as his fans find comfort in knowing he is a true angel now.
