Yankees Pound Angels Bullpen

Angels 9, Yankees 10

Once again, the Angels bullpen wasted the heroics of their teammates.  Given a 5 run lead with just 2 innings to play, rookie reliever Rafael Rodriquez and once dominating Jose Arredondo gave up 4 runs in the 8th.  Brian Fuentes entered the game in the bottom of the ninth, facing the heart of the Yankee order, and never retired a batter.  Jose Posada ended the game with a bases-loaded single to win it for the Bombers.

Wasted was another good start by Jered Weaver, who after having a shaky first inning where he gave up 4 runs, settled down to shutout the Yanks for 5 innings, at one point retiring 11 in-a-row.

Battling back from a 4 run deficit, the Angels scored 6 runs in the sixth, 3 coming on a Gary Matthews Jr. bases loaded triple, and three more runs in the 7th.  However, a 5 run lead wasn't enough for the Angels pen, as they recorded their 9 loss of the year.

Though Dondo deserves a lot of the blame, BOTG goes to Fuentes

Bottom line…..He’s the closer and gets paid to get 3 outs to save the game. If he does his job, the Angels win.

I remember these days...

I used to go to many many games like this. There were years that were like this. It was fun to go to the baseball games though. I know we expect more but this season is far from being over.

I’m a fan in the good, bad and ugly days. I’ll still be at the games no matter what.

Underestimating K-Rod is the best thing the FO ever did in the off-season.

It accelerated and rushed the other guys into roles they have not been accustomed yet.

Our pen now looks more like the Yankees of 2009 rather than the Yankees of 1996.

Ugh.

Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?

by BBFan1 on May 1, 2009 7:54 PM PDT reply actions

More likely the complete descimation of the starting lineup

has accelerated others into roles that they aren’t ready for.

Yeah, if Dondo was purely pitching in the 7th

inning, he wouldn’t be getting thoroughly destroyed everytime he took the field. Vice versa for for shields. These jokes are there to get three outs in the 7th 8th or 9th inning. I don’t give a shit which one they are accustomed too, they are downright terrible, their job performance is lousy, and they need to step up and get it done.

I don't even understand this

How did letting K-Rod go force anyone into roles that they are not accustomed to? Everyone is in their same role as last year, with Shields and Dondo being our setup guys. The fact that they both suck at it, and the Fuentes also is sucking, has nothing to do with new roles for these guys. It has to do with a total failure to do their jobs.

I’m hoping every night that they will turn it around!

We have been very fortunate to turn out such good pens for so long.

Percy, Weber, Levine, Shields, Arredondo, K-Rod, Donnelly, Gregg, Oliver, Carrasco, Lou Pote, Matt Wise, Speier, Shiggy, Holtz, Petkovsek…

That is a pretty damn good group of relievers. Even the Speier’s and Carrasco’s had one really good year. But, the fungibility of relievers is true. Guys like Shields – who are great for 5, 6 or 7 years – are very, very rare.

In the regular season they had more than 200 shots more than the second best team. The Ducks are going to get outshot this series just like they did the last one. They played a pretty good game tonight, but the major penalty in the first killed them. Then the one rebound they left loose all night finished it off. I’m not worried, this is going to be a hell of a series.

angel games are not very fun to watch these days

fuentes is a joke. honestly if a shake up is what we need then lets do it. i think something simply and in house would be to switch arredondo and fuentes’ roles. i think at this point even fuestes knows he shouldnt be a closer. start bringing him in the eighth or late seventh to at least take off some pressure. the closer spot may give jose some much needed confidence because other than ERA, his peripherals are not bad. if anything, we will be grooming a closer for the future. he may get a fire lit under his ass.

then when oliver comes back on monday he can take seventh. speier and shields can take care of the sixth and sometimes seventh roles. this is a manageable shake up that does not require additional help (whcih appears to be impossible anyways). just some simple in house reshuffling. ill tell you one thing, it cant be any worse than status quo.

Napoli at DH

I’m all in favor of this, but I’m still in shock that it happened with only 2 catchers on the roster. I wonder if they’ll call up Bobby Wilson to replace Wood on the roster and make this a regular thing. Sounds like a good plan to me since Wood clearly isn’t going to be playing. Napoli has been one of our best hitters, so let’s get him in there every night. Mathis has been fine too (he was big tonight). His “new approach” seems to be working. I think he could be a decent hitter with regular ABs. Not good, but certainly not a black hole.

So bring up Wilson to be the backup catcher, let Mathis catch most nights, with Napoli at DH, and play Izturis at short. I like it.

It's a wait and see according to the OC Register's blog.

"There’s a chance right now in the short term to keep Mike’s bat in the lineup and keep Jeff behind the plate," Scioscia said of the move. "If we were going to do this for an extended period of time, we’d have to make a move to add a third catcher. We can spot this in occasionally and see if it’s something we can use to keep moving forward."

Scioscia said Napoli would be back behind the plate tomorrow against left-hander CC Sabathia.

"Right now, we’re not ready to go and commit in this direction because we have a lot of bats that are important to keep going and keep in the lineup," Scioscia said. "It just fell into place with the day game tomorrow and another lefty."

In a year of such turmoil, whining still abounds.

Nice

Thanks, I hadn’t seen that. Sounds like a pretty solid plan. If Napoli keeps hitting, it has to be more valuable keeping his bat in the lineup every night than having Wood on the bench.

Glad to see the experiment.

Well

If Mathis gets injured, or has to come out, either Q will become the catcher, or Naps does, and we forfeit the DH spot. If this happens late in teh game, chances are that the spot will come up at most once, meaning we just put in a PH and put in another reliever.

That'll only happen if that one prospect is the second coming of Christ and redemption for mankind can only be achieved by smacking many balls out of the yard.

Closing

At this point I hope Escobar gets healthy and we let he close—he’s done it before.

might be on to something

but if we dont have a closer still by the time he actually gets back then it may be a lost cause anyway

My god

Arredondo doesn’t know how to pitch when he’s brought in with runners on! Stop doing it, Scioscia!

He had NOTHING on his pitches...

they were so hittable, I think my grannie might have had a fighting chance to hit one.

I thought of all last year Arredondo was the heir apparent to K-Rod

Not another guy with a ‘big arm’ and a 10 cent head.

Angels fans said there was nothing to worry about and this guy was going to be dominant out of the bullpen.

Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?

As an Angels fan myself, I want to believe the hype too

Especially when he had a damn good rookie year in 2008.

Now, maybe he is going through some rough times.

Still plenty of season left.

Who misses Frankie? I don't...

Me too

And I still do. I’m willing to give Jose the benefit of the doubt and chalk his early-season struggles up to a minor sophomore slump and/or the fact that everyone else around him is failing to get guys out. I honestly think that it makes it more difficult to do your job as a reliever when your fellow relievers are doing poorly. That’s why I think momentum — negative or positive — is real, and it obviously is not on our side right now.

Hopefully we can get through this and have the tide turn soon.

I'm new too

Born and raised in Southern California, but I work in a newsroom in New York, and YES just started the rebroadcast. I don’t think I can handle this rollercoaster again.

You know how people say that a game was a roller coaster ride?

Well…

Aren’t you supposed to end a roller coaster ride on the ground?

Let's do this for Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, and Henry Pearson.

A kind word for GMJ

He might have been Panther had we won.

When I left the game thread

To go to a meeting, we had just rallied and led 9-4. What the hell did you guys do after I left? You must not have been cheering hard enough. Blame of the game goes to the guys/gals on the thread after I left.

Angel Pitching (Adenhart), Angel Defense - get past that.

The bullpen needs Oliver and Escobar

This bullpen has pissed away the season so far; three inexcusable losses (A’s, Twins, and last night) Escobar was terrific out of the bullpen down the stretch in 2005 (plus he closed for the Blue Jays). I think starting puts far too much strain on his arm and thus is leading to these chronic injuries. I am hoping the Angels condition him for a return to the bullpen because:

1) He’s an effective strikeout pitcher and is ideally suited for high leverage situations
2) A better probability that Esobar can stay healthy if he only pitches an inning or two per outing

One of the worst decisions so far this season was letting Oliver start that one game. I hope the damage to his arm doesn’t linger over the course of the season. This bullpen really could have used him.

Escobar doesn't exist in my mind...

His roller coaster of “he’s doing well” “he’s suffered a setback” “he’s ahead of schedule” “now, he’s hurt again” has me entirely jaded. I don’t plan on seeing him on a mound in the bigs anytime soon. Once again, I hope I am wrong, but I’m tired of the Myspacecobar roller coaster.

In a year of such turmoil, whining still abounds.

WTF?!

I just finished watching this pathetic game by the Angels…

1) How the fuck do you blow a 5 run lead in 3 innings? Your offense roars back after being down 4, tacks on another 5 and ?
2) Aren’t we supposed to have the best “hold” guy in the league?
3) Can this bullpen hold down anything? How many runs do they need?
4) OK so the bullpen sucks, so WTF happened to our closer?

All the while Gubie is harping on how great the Yanks are at getting back into a game. WTF!? Shit if you’re going against the Angels bullpen, you could be the Cerritos Yankees and still pull off a win (no offense to anyone in Cerritos).

God needed a starter. RIP #34
