the pitch count
Rev, since you're checking the site while you're with Jeff on 830, here's a follow to that call about pitch counts.
Pretty sure they started after Bill James got rolling. His research showed that for every Feller and Seaver, piles of pitchers' arms died early because of overuse.
Take Mark Fidrych. After he died, stories zeroed in on his sad, quick finish. Had 24 complete games in his rookie 1976. And was basically done by the next spring.
So hell yes count the pitches. Bring in the relief. And keep Lackey and Santana pitching for years.

It's called moderation.
The pendulum has swung too far in the other direction.

or...
maybe baseball has just found the “sweet spot” on pitch counts? It seems to me right around 100, with 120 being the upper-limit, right? And with young pitchers who have never thrown more than 120+ innings, the leash is even shorter. The game is more advanced now, pitchers have to throw basically max effort the whole game, so they aren’t going to log as many innings. Why is this so hard to understand? The “good old days” are called that for a reason. Why attempt to recapture them if its basically impossible?

The Pampering
Here is something to read when talking about pitch counts. For me it is about how taxing the innings are and how many pitches he makes in the inning is he a slider / fastball guy or a fastball / changeup guy. Maybe he is a split / curveball type guy. Is he a strikeout pitcher (always high PC). Strong body guy (Lackey)or lean and wiry (Santana), but more importantly have they conditioned the body in order to pitch longer and deeper into the game.

pitch count
Lets make sure a healthy, pitcher who is pitching a heck of a game who has giving up one run on four hits through seven to get him out of the game. Its not like he has every thrown a complete game.

He had 1 before that
1. Hindsight will always be 20/20. We can’t account for our bullpen blowing a game; they almost did today, but didnt. WTY was at 98 pitches. The pen either starts the 8th or comes in halfway through it. Sosh made a call, the pen just blew it. It happens. The season is 162 games long; we have to play like it.
