A New Dynasty, and a Dilemma
To the point: I've recently started an Angels Dynasty over at DynastyManager. You can find it here: http://www.dynastymanager.com/teampage.php?sport=mlb&u=SeanRobinson
I ran a dynasty a couple of years ago, which is also posted somewhere here on HH, and I'm going to try to do the same in this case--to keep everything pretty realistic and see how the parallel Halos match up against the real-life team.
I might be completely and totally off base in even asking the following, so please slap me/kick me/etc. if that is the case.
I've got a problem. I've been planning this dynasty for a while, since around mid-March, and haven't gotten to do it until now. In the meantime, as you know, real life has intervened.
You can see what the obvious problem is here. How do I most respectfully handle it? Should I pretend it never happened, and keep Nick in my rotation throughout the season? Or should I pretend he never existed and/or invent some story whereby he retired before the season began? I want to be able to feel some kind of "closure," as a fan, either way--but I'm not sure what the best way to handle that is, especially since other people are going to be following along, such that what I wind up doing is going to enthuse or anger others no matter which way I take this.
What do you all as fans feel the best way to go is? Am I completely off base even asking this?
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

Meh
Figured I’d ask, but I know I’m toeing the line of trivializing.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

i am just razzing you
you bring up a good question:
is the role of ART to stick with reality and mimic it in order to uplift us with a reminder of what we have or is the role of art to go beyond what we experience and reveal what might be or what might have been?
Are we enlightened by a representation of the world we know or a presentation of the world we can never otherwise know?

This is a very tough question
But I think leaving Nick in your dynasty rotation leads to too many “what ifs.” I mean, yes, it is fantasy baseball, but I think its better to let it go. That’s my own personal strategy, but its more to each his or her own.

Yeah
That is what I am leaning towards. I’ve wanting to pitch “just one last game” with him, but I’m having trouble finding a tasteful way to do it. Hmm. I have an idea, but it might border on cheese. We’ll see.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

Nick's staying on my team for the rest of the season
It’s not ultra-competitive anyways.

To clarify
I’m actually playing through all of these games—or as close to it as I have patience for—throughout the season on MVP 2005. So it doesn’t have any “real world” fantasy baseball impact, insofar as fantasy baseball has “real world” impact. Ha. Anyway, just thought I’d clarify. I want to keep things realistic—so I’m having Lackey and Santana start the season on the DL, with Vlad, Moseley, Jepsen, and Oliver following shortly after that—but the Adenhart tragedy presents an interesting problem. I have an idea of how to handle it and keep things realistic, but it might be cheesy, so we’ll see.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

so what happened?
That'll only happen if that one prospect is the second coming of Christ and redemption for mankind can only be achieved by smacking many balls out of the yard.

Still haven't done anything
I’m thinking of having him start and then no one ever mentions him again…just sort of “disappears,” or do some ultra cheesy thing wherein Cy Young appears and ushers him off…probably the former, though.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

Thanks, all, for the advice
I’m going to go with the ultra-realist approach and play things out as they happened, dedicating the rest of the season to Adenhart. Anything else risks cheapening the importance and depth of what happened. You’re right, Rev, it is a fine line between desire and reality in art, and I think in this case it’s more appropriate and/or more valuable to go with realism.
Thanks!
RIP Nick Adenhart.

Update
I ended up using Nick in that first game—I didn’t manage to get any strikeouts—it’s tough!—but Nick went seven strong innings and only gave up two runs on eight scattered hits, for a good 2.57 ERA. I then just put all his pitching stats—i.e., pitch control, pitch velocity, etc.—at zero and released him from the organization.
RIP Nick Adenhart.
