Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

I love posts about trade ideas, especially bad ones.

So I will make one!

The Brewers second basemen just went down for the year. They need one. So, hell, I was thinking lets give them Izturis, or Aybar for something.

No, not Braun. Get that out of your mind now. As much as I would love to have a player on the Angels with the nickname "The Hebrew Hammer" its not going to happen.

The Mets also need a firstbasemen, which, maybe, if you think about it we might have depth at. When Vlad comes back to the fulltime DH role, where can we get Naps some consistent playing time? First base? Me thinks so. Although Kendry has been on a tear, it might be fun to play with the idea of working up a package to the Mets.

Obviously we probably won't do either of these things, but, hey, we can discuss it.

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

GMJ HAS A NO-TRADE CLAUSE IN HIS CONTRACT

Do it for Nick '09

by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on May 19, 2009 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Not for too much longer...

*full no-trade clause, 2007-09
*limited no-trade clause, 2010-11 (may block deals to 4 clubs)

Meaning he can be traded next year if the Angels so desire.

He could be traded this year, since he is unhappy with the playing time. A no-trade clause it at the player’s discretion. If he can start elsewhere, he would waive the NTC.

Make some noise already people. Come on!

I get that...

but its pretty obvious no team out is willing to give GMJ a full-time playing position.

Bad Trades...

I dis-agree that a trade involved moving Izturis or Aybar would be considered Bad. Although Izturis has been clutch, he’s a slap hitter that doesn’t show much power. Aybar’s defense can pretty stellar, but sometimes falls apart. And Wood at SS would greatly increase our infield power. And from what I’ve seen he’s pretty good with the glove at SS.

I am a little like Acuda, I’ve got somewhat of a man crush on Morales. Napoli will stay in the line up most days due to his catching, even when Vlad gets back. I don’t want to see Morales get traded. I project next year if we do not re-sign Vlad, Abreu or Figs our line up next year could look like this…

RF Matthews
2B Kendrick
CF Hunter
DH Rivera
1B Napoli
LF Morales
3B Wood
C Mathis/Buddie/Conger
SS Aybar/SRod

by Jay Cal on May 19, 2009 10:01 AM PDT reply actions

???

Matthews leading off?

Kendrick stays as he continues to hit 230?

Buddie/Conger? WHAT? Conger wont be ready and did you forget about Bobby Wilson?

Also, Napoli has never played first as far as I’m aware. But guess who has…Bobby Wilson.

Do it for Nick '09

by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on May 19, 2009 10:21 AM PDT up reply actions

I didn't think about Wilson.

Napoli will be our catcher for the foreseeable future. But along with Buddie, Wilson, and yes Conger we are going to need to do something. The suggestion to move Napoli to 1st is that will allow Mathis to catch every day and move up either Wilson or Buddie and keep Nap in the line-up. Now you can keep Napoli in the DH spot and really nothing changes. Morales stays at 1st. And Rivera plays Left.

And using the roster I put up there, who would you bat lead off? Aybar? Torii? Matthews did bat a little lead off for us last year when Figgins was hurt. And if you don’t bat Kendrick 2nd, who bats 2nd? Aybar?

We’ve got a plethora of talent down on the farm. We’re deep in the catch and in the middle infield. So what do we do? A trade is going to have to happen at some point. Maybe not until the off-season, but there will be move coming.

thats your problem in the first place....

you didnt take into consideration a leadoff hitter. Something which is key to a Mike Sociscia team.

I dont think it is entirely out of the question that Aybar could be groomed into a lead-off hitter.

Also, dont be so quick to think Conger and or Budde are going to make it in the bigs. Hell, we dont even know if Bobby Wilson is a big league talent. He seems small for a catcher.

In addition, why is Abreu not in your lineup? I would keep Abreu over keeping Vlad. Notice: abreu can actually run, take walks and play the field while Vlad is two-steps away from an old folks home.

Tell that to Scott Spiezio and Troy Glaus…

by Rev Halofan on May 19, 2009 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions

The leadoff batter is irrelevant

That batting position usually starts the game off, and that’s it. What you want is speed at the top of the line-up… which Abreu has, along with a great OBP. It appears with his age, and hitting in our ballpark, that the power isn’t wat it used to be… and that’s okay. Anyways, I’d be thrilled with:

1. Bobby Abreu (RF) (Resign him)
2. Howie Kendrick (2nd)
3. Jason Bay or Matt Holliday (LF)
4. Torii Hunter (CF)
5. Kendry Morales (1st)
6. Mike Napoli ©
7. Juan Rivera (DH)
8. Brandon Wood (3rd)
9. Erick Aybar (SS)

Bench:
Gary Matthews Jr. (I doubt he’s going anywhere) (4th OF)
Jeff Mathis (Back-up catcher)
Macier Izturis (2nd, SS, 3rd)
Reggie Willits (5th OF)
Matt Brown (1st, 3rd, LF, RF… Basically Rob Quinlan but talented)

SP1: Jake Peavy (Everyone has their price)
SP2: John Lackey (Resign him)
SP3: Ervin Santana
SP4: Joe Saunders
SP5: Jered Weaver
BP1: Kelvim Escobar (Resign him, pending health)
BP2: Darren Oliver (Ask him for 1 more year)
BP3: Brian Fuentes (Situational lefty and spot closer)
BP4: Matt Palmer or Rich Thompson (Long relievers/spot starter)
Set-up: Scot Shields
Closer: Jose Arredondo

There are a few shake-ups there:
1. First up, Jason Bay. If Boston doesn’t resign him first than we have to try. If not Bay, than maybe Matt Holliday. One of them steps in Vlads place.

2. The resigning of Bobby Abreu. He’s a contact guy, with a great OBP. His defense doesn’t kill us. He steals bases, and he’s a phenomenal mentor to the younger players.

3. No Chone Figgins??? Not at the money he’s going to want and damnit it’s Woods turn. He’s ready!

4. Screw Rob Quinlan… Matt Brown is a more talented player.

5. The Jake Peavy situation. This is likely a stretch I know this. But, a winning team is something he wants. He’s close to SD which is what he wants. I can’t help the National league thing… it is what it is. But the trade for Peavy is Jordan Walden, Anthony Ortega, and Hank Conger. If it get’s the deal done, Freddy Sandoval, or Mark Trumbo. I can’t see them wanting Trumbo though because they already have Gonzalez. Peavy just shut the White Sox down because of winning formula, location, and league. We offer 2 of 3. Will the Cubs up the deal? That means they have to resign Harden as well. Hardens money would likely go to Peavy. Okay, so next year, we make a major play for Harden. The Padres won’t trade within their own division to the Dodgers, so they’re out of the equation. Do the Braves have enough to make the deal happen? That, I don’t know. But if you’re going after Peavy, it needs to happen soon before the dead like approaches and you get into a bidding war.

6. No Vlad. Well… this is a tough one. But it’s a business. Bay and Holliday are both younger and better investments for the franchise at this point. If I could sign Vlad to a 2-3 year, $16-24M deal, I would. But then you have to trade Rivera, or not resign Abreu. I think Abreu fits the line-up I gave better than Vlad.

Forgot something on the Peavy deal...

It’s the only trade this year for us and it doesn’t directly affect the 25 man roster. Maybe in depth in case of injuries but I think our bug came early this year.

by matt92130 on May 22, 2009 10:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Next day post...

Had another thought. I like Aybar, but if the Padres need a SS, I’d throw him in the deal for Peavy. Then, let Wood go to SS, and bring up Matt Brown who will eventually take 3rd over from Figgins next year.

That’s my last post on my post, haha, sorry.

Good, but not good at the same time

How do we afford Peavy, Lackey, Bay/Holliday, and Abreu. Chupa is certainly not going to be this cheap nxt year. So this roster will not be entirely possible

RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09

by vlad IS my man on May 23, 2009 9:24 AM PDT up reply actions

I thought the same thing so I worked some numbers...

Vlad, Escobar, Figgins, Speier, and Quinlan’s 2009 salaries total $37M. The only one I bring back is Escobar, at $2-3M for a reliever. Bringing Abreu back for a 2 year deal at $16-20M. Lackey gets a $3-5M bump up in pay which brings his total to $13-15M per. Maybe back load Lackey’s contract so it would extend beyond Peavy’s so it’s not $40M for just two pitchers. Peavy makes $15M in 2010. And bringing in Bay or Holliday for $14-18M at however many years.

Monies expiring: $37M
New monies beyond our current payroll: Approximately $41M.

A $4M dollar increase to $117M isn’t breaking the bank, and we’re bringing in seriously solid talent. Also take into account a 10% increase for other player salaries bringing our total payroll to $128M. That still leaves us with the 6th highest payroll (And where we stand today) behind, the Yankees, Mets, Cubs, Red Sox, and Tigers.

It works… all we need now is a GM with the balls to pull it off.

As far as the leadoff hitter

I’d rather get a vet with good OBP skills who can steal bases then resign Figgins, who’s probably going to require a three-year deal. Damon and Winn will both be availiable. In Scioscia’s system they will burn up the basepaths

Another option is trading for Carl Crawford, who will be a free agent after next season. Same with Coco Crisp. It depends on where those teams are…

Here’s how I envision the lineup next year:

LF Free Agent
2B Kendrick
DH Free Agent (Vlad or someone else)
CF Hunter
1B Morales
C Napoli
RF Rivera
SS Aybar
3B Wood

by NoGimmicks on May 20, 2009 12:11 AM PDT up reply actions

Damon and Winn are attractive because

they can probably be had for dirt cheap just like Abreu. Then after next year we can look for a long-term solution, or maybe even Bourjos will be ready

Winn is a 4th outfielder, and we’re already paying a boatload for one of those, and Damon will agree to a contract to stay with the Skanks, you can bank on it.

Bad Trades???

If we don’t resign Vlad, Abreu or Figgy then here is what the lineup will be, IF WE DON’T GET A FREE AGENT TO LEAD OFF.

1. Aybar SS
2. Kendrick 2B
3. Morales 1B ( ow can you move him?)
4. Hunter CF
5. Napoli DH
6. Rivera LF
7. Wood 3B
8. Mathis C
9. Willits/Matthews RF

Not that the order ever stays the same… its more where guys will play. i think they will sign at least one free agent this off-season. If they don’t then I think that the starting lineup will look something like this. I can’t believe you want to move Morales to LF that is just DUMB. With the way he can play first base? I am not saying that Nap’s couldn’t do it but come on. Mathis and Nap’s will have the same rotation next year. I think Willits is gone but this is what Soth’s team would look like if you let the free agents go. You did say that they were not likely trades….. THEY WILL NEVER HAPPEN. The team will not make any trades until the team has been 100% for at least 2 months. MAYBE right before the trading deadline.

While I disagree with your suggestion....

I think its the first reasonable “trade post.” Furthermore, its coherent!

Here is my problem, Vlad is getting old. I love the guy but with Napoli on a tear and a plethora of hard-hitting prospects wasting away in Triple-A, the question must be asked:

“Will the the Angels resign Vlad next year?”

I support resigning Vlad. However, if he resigns, he needs to take a secondary role as a full-time DH and he needs to take as paycut. These are two things that are undoubtedly are going to HAVE to be agreed upon by Vlad. Will he do it? Who knows. Something tells me there is some waster of a team who will cough up the dough and actually let him play RF on a regular basis.

That being said, if we make a trade like you suggest and then lose Vlad next year, then we essentially lost two power hitters and have a gap at first. Plus, while I am all for Naps, lets see if the guy is still doing his thang in Aug/Sept.

I think we need to reconsider our IF. And I suspect that next year we will be without Figgy and HK. Everyone screams Aybar and Izzy but Aybar is young and Izzy is clutch so I think they stay.

A good question is: Who is on the trading block THIS year? You might be right in your assumption that K-Mo might be on it. I hope not though.

Wasn't there an article somewhere

about Vlad being willing to take a hometown discount and/or wanting to finish his career with the Angels?

If so think we should to resign him and fit him into the role Salmon filled during his final years.

On the block this year, I’d like to think one of the 3 guys blocking though I usually name a different one each time.

I doubt Kowbell is on the block, unless we’re getting a 1B-Man back.\
Who else do we have to play the position?
Napoli, Juan, nor Matt Brown are going to be handed the position (barring injury) while the Soth still believes we have a shot at the division.

His OBP

is .323…worst on the team among regulars besides Howie. I don’t care what kind of speed he has or about his ability to bunt, that isn’t a two-hole hitter.

I do agree, however, that he has been an asset to this team so far. With Wood waiting behind him and tearing up AAA, it makes Aybar a big target, which is unfair. He has great defensive range and If he continues to slug .450 and hit for Avg., it is going to force some tough decisions come July.

Personally

I think Wood gives us another power bat in the line-up. And I think small ball certainly does have merit, but I want my Halos to go to Boston in October and to watch several players do what Napoli did. When you can change the face of the game with a swing of the bat you certainly bring something to the table. Wood has been on a tear in the Minors. Instead of auditioning Wood for the playoffs in August, lets do it now. Let Wood play.

Aybar certainly has value in a trade. Let’s make his 308 BA a selling point. His trade value will only deflate through out the year.

Considering our organizational depth at the positions he plays...

His versatility might be just as or more important as a bargaining chip in a trade, i.e. not only does it make his low BA (for a leadoff hitter) less glaring, but (obviously) it also allows the Angels to shop him to more teams and at more positions.

If we weren’t so stocked in AAA and didn’t have so many proven OFs, Figgy would be more valuable to this team in roving utility role. But we aren’t even using him as a utility guy! We stick him at 3B everyday and block Wood.

Let’s face it, there’s at least an even chance that Howie ends up being just a decent player, and possibly even a mediocre one. Only problem is we’d be selling very low on him right now, so the return won’t be the best. But maybe he finally learns to recognize a slider and turns into the all star we all thought he would be.

My question is: What exactly do we get from these teams that need middle infielders and catchers? A starter would be nice but no one will give up even a decent one at this point, and really the same goes for relievers.

IF Ninja is not going to re-sign him, then why not also consider moving Vlad? Watching him run makes my knees hurt, and I just don’t think he will age gracefully given how hard he plays the game.

I agree regarding Mathis and Howie. I’d also lump Willits, Rivera, Izzie, and Aybar into the trade bin. I’m on the fence about Figgins, he’s adds a dimension to the line-up that is difficult to replace, however Abreu could fill the lead-off role. My concern with Figgins is that he probably has only a couple more seasons before the wheels fall off.

send him to the brewers

maybe get a reliever like villanueva, something to improve the pen!

They should rename Angel Stadium to "Heaven"

On the trade block...

Lackey 2 season starting on the DL, looking for a premium contract with no discount, and is losing a little control on the curve. Still will win 10-16 games this year.

Figgins Losing speed, no power, and blocks Wood. Adds immediate depth for any outfield or infield. Has good defense at third and still has gas in the tank.

Aybar Lost his speed from AAA, very little power, has had some errors. Still young and has flashy defense. Being able to play 2B or SS makes him versatile.

RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09

No one needs a shortstop more than San Diego

PEAVY-PEAVY-PEAVY

(I like beating dead horses. Don’t tell PETA)

Angel Pitching (Adenhart), Angel Defense - get past that.

And now he's on his way to Chi-Town

I think we’re really missing the boat. Having Peavy would certainly change the dynamic of contract negotiations with Lackey.

Here are the keepers who should not be traded:

1B: Morales (no explanation needed)
2B: Kendrick – We’d be selling low, and the potential is still there.
SS: Aybar (this may sound ridiculous, but if he can hit well and give league average offense, he’s a pretty good player)
3B: Wood.

That’s our future infield, it’s cheap, talented and will be locked up for years to come.

That leaves Figgins really, who is on the block. Vlad and Abreu should only be traded if we are out of contention

But I don’t see Figgins getting traded, he’s too valuable to Mike Scioscia’s system

Since we won't be out of contention

And since Mike won’t trade Figgy: Then who are we going to trade for Peavy (ok, who are we going to trade for somebody).

Angel Pitching (Adenhart), Angel Defense - get past that.

by vladtheimpaler on May 20, 2009 12:22 AM PDT up reply actions

That's the problem

The best trade bait we have is Figgins, but Mike won’t trade him, and I’m not in a huge rush to get rid of him either.

As long we’re on a run it doesn’t make sense to trade away our depth

by NoGimmicks on May 20, 2009 12:26 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't have a problem with that

Angel Pitching (Adenhart), Angel Defense - get past that.

I mean: not trading away our depth if we are contending

sounds good

Angel Pitching (Adenhart), Angel Defense - get past that.

Watching the Mariners games with Russell Branyon, he would have been a good pick up last off season

just after or in the interim of the Teixeira will he stay or go period. I wonder if the Angels even considered him.

I am The Iron Man.

This guy has the weirdest stats I've ever seen

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=3988

RBI’s/HR really low. A long career with few ab’s/season. But he sure has staying power.

Angel Pitching (Adenhart), Angel Defense - get past that.

I still think you are a groupie chick

There is no other explanation.

Angel Pitching (Adenhart), Angel Defense - get past that.

by vladtheimpaler on May 20, 2009 2:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Not really

We’re pretty set at 1B/3B

He would have been a good pick up for the A’s, but their loss…
