Scot Shields to Disabled List, Rich Thompson Called Up

This from the Angels blog via OC Register:

The Angels placed setup man Scot Shields on the 15-day disabled list with left patella tendinitis and recalled reliever Rich Thompson from Triple-A Salt Lake.

A second post quoted Shields in reference to his last outing:

"There were some good days, but today I wasn’t even thinking about the hitters. I was just thinking about how much pain is this going to be?" Shields said. "When it came to that point, I was just like, ‘I can’t go on like that.’ "

Hope Shields gets better. Until then, break out the Welcome Wagon for Rich Thompson, the next one in-line of the ever revolving door that is the 2009 Angels blow-pen.

They announced this on the post game show immediately after the game on FSNWest.

howieistheman and I mentioned it in the post game thread already. I hope Rich can do us some good this time around and I know Ashley will be thrilled over this news.

I think this is good news.

While it is always bad to see someone hit the DL, maybe this is the time off Shields needs. Also Chopper seemed decent enough earlier and hopefully should do decently enough out of the pen to keep a position.

That'll only happen if that one prospect is the second coming of Christ and redemption for mankind can only be achieved by smacking many balls out of the yard.

Sheesh, finally

See, that’s the difference between GMJ 2008 and Shields. GMJ 2008 knew he was injured, knew he wasn’t contributing, and apparently somewhat self-centeredly wanted to play and so raised a stink and refused to go on the DL—on second thought, was he even asked then?
Scot Shields, on the other hand, knows he’s injured, tried to keep going a la GMJ 2008 because he didn’t want to miss time, and finally realized the team was suffering as long as he was suffering. So he sat himself down and went on the DL, as hard as it was. Good for him. I still respect GMJ, but I wish he would have done the same last year.

RIP Nick Adenhart.

Yeah, no more WBC for Angels players

After Scot, Bartolo, Jepsen(?)—thank you thank you THANK YOU Reagins for not allowing Lackey, Saunders, and Napoli to play in that thing!

Rich "Airwolf" Thompson is back! put another shrimp on etc etc

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
“You’ll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me”
And he sang as he watched and waited ‘til his billy boiled,
“You’ll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".

This bullpen collapses faster than the Austro-Hungarian Empire

Airwolf? Is that the stupid 80’s show that copied the Roy Schieder epic film “Blue Thunder?”

I love this team.

Mixed feelings

On one hand, I’m relieved by this news. It helps to explain what otherwise made no sense. Hopefully, with rest, Shields can return as strong as ever.

On the other hand, I’m disappointed. I was very much looking forward to having Vlad, Lackey, and Santana back healthy, and had hoped that this series would be a turning point for us. This is just one more key guy to go down….

Rich...

…is up with the Big Club to stay. Mark my words. I like Bulger’s power arm, but Thompson is better and was K-ing them down in the PCL. If he keeps the ball down and doesn’t get too fine with the strike zone, he’ll do great.

Do you think that Rich and Ashley are blasting “Two Less Lonely People In The World” by Air Supply tonight? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHnYRK27RNE

In Remembrance of Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, Henry Pearson. Heal soon Jon Wilhite.

I want Andrew Thomas Gallo to be a pinata, and the Angels supply the bats...
