GA and steroids?

GA on steroids? has 21 homeruns in 99 and then goes to 35. Look at his stats from 2000-2004.  I like how espn has him playing for CAL, ANA and LAA. l

2000 was an offensive, and home run, spike year

You could find plenty of such “evidence” for steroids in 1996, 1987, 1977, 1970, 1961, 1950, and 1936, for starters. Go ahead and look, then get back to us about the juicers during FDR’s heyday.

skinny legs and thighs for couple of years, then thick thighs and then he is not a singles hitter any more. Wins the HR contest in all-star weekend

his peak years

coincide with his “prime years” age-wise, and his singles-hitting decline would indicate otherwise…

How old are you?

For those of us around G.A.’s age or older, the thighs (and other bits) are almost always thicker at 36 than 22.

Let's do this for Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, and Henry Pearson.

You are misreading the normal curve of a pro ballplayer.

They ALL look like close to that, with some variations depending on whether the player is a MAJOR HR king, or Reggie Willits.

If you had the results for years 2004, 2005 and 2006 go UP, then would you have a case.

As far as I'm concerned everyone wanted to crucify the big bad monster the Angels faced in the 2002 WS

Now, that it is obvious there were a lot more guys on PEDs, we’d like the problem to conveniently go away.

Who misses Frankie? I don't...

by BBFan1 on May 9, 2009 4:33 AM PDT up reply actions

I for one am not "everyone"

I wanted to crucify Bonds not because he was a suspected juicer, but because he was a one-dimensional (though wotta dimension it was!) jerkface. Crucifying it was more about team vs. selfishness than it was ever about Virtuous Living vs. Steroids. See Seitz’s interview w/ Salmon, for example.

by mattwelch on May 9, 2009 6:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Figgins had 9 HR in 07

then only 3 in 08. That’s like exponentially different. Steroids perhaps?

You don't have to defend yourself

He (KingF15h) always make ridiculous statements like that. If you like something, you have to like it unconditionally and never point out a flaw or something that could be better about it. He’s one of those “love it or leave it” genius philosophers. The questions you may or may not have about GA are legitimate, and worth taking a look at at the very least. It’s never a good idea to put ANYTHING on a pedestal.

It’s like- I’m a huge USC fan, but do you think I’m gonna defend OJ?

Apologies in advance.

Dickie Thon had an even more pronounced curve ...

… and what about Downing? One day he shows up and he’s all bulked up and shit. And Tony Gwynn SUDDENLY hits 24 HR? I’m being sarcastic here, but the truth is we’ll never know who was taking the juice and who wasn’t.

When retired players who think they should be getting in the Hall of Fame start coming up short in the voting and they see others get in who have lesser stats, they’ll start singing like birds if they have information. This is such a long way from over … Canseco is just the edge of the wedge.

Stats support clean livin'...

more than steroid use. Normal peak and normal decline. I’ve suspected many Angels, but GA wasn’t one of them.

He may be one of the few clean in a dirty era, which would make him one of the truly elite players amongst a bunch of Victor Conte outliers.

That’s why its unfair to the clean players and fans, because we’ll never know. But GA’s stats are pretty old school.

by AlanFalcon on May 10, 2009 6:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Didnt see article

so I assume they made a similar stat argument. Sadly, someone could argue that Kingfish was dirty because of the era he played in, had power, and simply because he always looked like he was going to split his pants. Was he just an average player with roided up career numbers? Or a truly great player amongst a bunch of cheaters?

That’s why this is so messed up.

by The Clyde on May 10, 2009 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions

I never saw GA as lazy...

He worked as hard as anyone did off the field. And, so what if he didn’t dive? And if anyone thinks he didn’t care, or didn’t want to be there, well, you’re stupid. Just because somebody doesn’t smile all the time doesn’t mean they’re not happy to be there…

Just my two cents…

And it will probably start an uproar…

So I’m prepared…

After an early game in 2004, when Vladdy struck out swinging for the fences, and GA got a nice double. I commented to someone that that was why I liked GA…. cool, professional, and gts the job done.

HOLY CRAP

The man started out in his young career with not too much power, which escalated and plateaued right around the 27-30 age range, and then he began to decline in power and health toward the end of his career. THAT BASTARD MUST HAVE BEEN ON ’ROIDS! HOW ELSE TO EXPLAIN THIS SO-CALLED “PEAK” THAT OCCURRED IN THE MIDST OF HIS CAREER! IT MAKES NO SENSE OTHERWISE!

2000 was the second-homeringist season in American League history. Jumping to steroid conclusions based on spike-year numbers is quite a bit less than rigorous.

by mattwelch on May 9, 2009 10:50 AM PDT reply actions

Wasn't the ball juiced that year?

Seems to me we had stories about how the Rawlings factory in the DR was making balls which flew further than in the previous season—the hitters and pitchers both noticed this.

I've always wondered

Not just because of the spike in power.

Not just because of the sudden onset of a series of injuries.

But also because if you look at GA, he also got a lot smaller once testing in earnest began. I think it’s reasonable to question anyone and everyone who played during the “steroid era” because you just don’t know.

by jjackflash on May 9, 2009 3:41 PM PDT reply actions

Steve Garvey on steroids?

AG GA G/HR SG G/HR
23 106 16 96 9
24 150 12 114 8
25 154 8 156 21
26 156 15 160 18
27 157 21 162 13
28 159 35 162 33
29 161 28 162 21
30 158 29 162 28
31 159 29 163 26
32 112 14 110 10
33 142 17 162 16
34 141 17 100 14
35 108 16 161 8
36 145 15 162 17
-———————

To sum up:

  • Through age 27, both had shown sporadic, medium power, with G.A. hitting 72 home runs and Garvey hitting 78.
  • At age 28, both set career highs in homers, G.A. with 35, Garv with 33.
  • From 29-31, while playing every day, both managed the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th highest home-run totals in their careers, with G.A. averaging 29 a year and Garvey 25.
  • From 32-36, both declined, with a combination of injuries and power shortage. G.A. hit 79 homers over these five years, Garvey 65.

I look forward to your penetrating analysis of how Garvey’s numbers suggest he was on the juice.
