Matthes
Do you have anymore info about Matthes? I haven’t been able to find much about him.
With the prep catcher that’s not too bad considering they take a while to develop. Plus with Conger’s injury history who really knows if he stays behind the plate.
From the reports i’ve read, Poythress sounds like a masher, but with Morales (hopefully) blocking him, not to mention Trumbo I’m not sure if you couldn’t go somewhere else with that pick. That said, in general, I’m hoping for a number of early hitters.
Trumbo's power disappeared this year in AA
and the dude’s OBP sucks. i wouldn’t hold out too much hope for him
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

heres more of Matthes stats
G 64 AB 197 H 72 Avg .362 HR 28 RBI 81 2B 14 3B 2 BB 31 HBP 11 OBP .465 K 44 SLG .883 R 65 SB 13 CS 2
hes also a good fielder 0 errors 7 OF assists
he was the SEC baseball Player of Year

sports/2009/05/alabamas_kent_matthews_named_s.html
and ya Trumbo has been pretty bad this year and he walks about as many times as Howie does but im hoping/wishing for a big 2nd half from him. And with Poythress hes huge 6’4 245 so he would have to play 1B/3B/DH, KMO could be moved to LF

Scouting reports and videos
of many of these players are archived here . . .
Jake Barret at 78???
Wow… Hes my Teammate on my La Dodgers Scout team(i Know im Sorry)
Hes my boy. He throws hard he has a nasty breaking ball… But all signs lead up to him being a sun devil next year
Nick Adenhart.
Sorry for my ignorance
But could you please explain scout teams/leagues? This is high-school level, right? Are these teams coached/managed by the parent organization’s area scout? Are we talking wood or aluminum bats? Thanks.
RIP Nick Adenhart, #34
I know a little about scout teams
a friend of mine managed the scout team for an NL team last year.
Yes it is high school talent. They are using wood bats I am pretty sure. The guy I knew that was managing the scout team was an area scout for the team he was working for. They only play on the weekends I think maybe with some Friday night games.
Also just because a player plays for the Angels Scout team doesn’t mean he is in any way tied to that organization. He is free to be drafted by whoever. For example Kyle Skipworth was on the Braves Scout team and was drafted by the Marlins.
Cool thanks
Any idea how these teams are funded and where they play? Does the parent organization provide equipment? Do the teams play only against other scout teams? Do they play at JuCo or high school fields maybe? Does the “league” they play in keep standings and determine a league winner?
Sheesh, I’m like a 6-year-old…
RIP Nick Adenhart, #34
sorry I don't know the answers to all those questions
I’m pretty sure that the parent org. provides bats.
I know they play other scout teams, but I’m not sure if they play colleges.
I’m not sure where all their games are played but I do remember Future Angels saying that the Angels Scout team played at least some of their games at Angels Stadium.
what we need is a Matt Wieters/Justin Smoak/Buster Posey type player
someone with power, plate discipline and a massive upside.
sure, it’ll cost us, but if we have 2 of the first 25 picks, we had better be getting a talent like that.
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34
obviously there's no way we're getting a #1 overall type player
but there’s no reason why we can’t get one of the top tier players with the 24th overall pick.
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34
Well then it should not be different then any other year we have a first round pick.
Play Wood already. Willits sucks.
it comes down to money, methinks
like that one draft preview said… we’ve had terrible financing for the past few drafts. as long as we commit some more money to actually signing top players, we’ll get them.
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

Wieters/Smoak/Posey are all top 5 sort of picks
They are never still around late enough for us to grab them (with the exception of Jered Weaver, who really was that kind of prospect and slipped to us with the 12th pick in the ‘04 draft). That’s why we draft primarily from the high school class – to try to get our hooks into guys who could be that good before they establish themselves in college.
The money part is serious, sure, but our total expenditures would have been more in line with the other teams had we succeeded in signing Cone last year and Harvey the year before. I don’t think they’re deliberately holding back and not signing the best talent available. The recent track record isn’t great, but I’ve got to think that Moreno will lay out the bucks when it’s appropriate.
But it doesn't really seem that when they've lost out on those type of players
that they have supplemented the draft with international free agents. Following Baseball America, it didn’t sound like we got any high priced young international free agents either.
Couple that with selecting guys that it sounds like we’ve had NO chance of signing like Cooper and it seems like they have been on the cheap side.
they didn't sign either of them though
and then when they didn’t sign them they didn’t use that money it certainly doesn’t seem like they reinvested it into the international free agent market. Hopefully they were planning on using it this year, with them knowing that they’d likely have some extra draft picks, granted though they made that decision well before they got Teixera.
Yes so they were cheap.
They made horrible offers to both of them (reportedly)
Play Wood already. Willits sucks.
If the Angels are going to build the team
through the draft and not through FA (besides a couple) we need to spend however much it takes to sign people (unless there asking for something ridiculous). And that is what the team does build through the draft. I think in that article it said we spend 5-7 M each draft maybe we need to spend 7-12 M (12-15 this year) and sign the big guys we draft like Harvey and Matsuz
