Lackey's Comments
Did anyone happen to read today's LA Times article on the Angles' loss and come away with a HUGE question of what's going on in the clubhouse? Lackey said he basically wasn't calling anyone out or naming names until he takes care of his own business. And that he couldn't talk publicly about things that have changed within the club.
What gives?

It's easy
The team won 100 games last year, and is a .500 team this year. Its easy to have “great chemistry” and a “content clubhouse” when the team is winning.
The fact is that this is a team in transition, it’s stars are not aging very well, there’s key free agents that likely will not be back, the farm system is not that deep, the Ninja could not close the deal on the desired free agents, and maybe the veterans have tuned out Soth.
We had a good run winning the division for the last couple of years. It’s time to re-tool.
I agree with these comments 100%
The Halos may win the division withe a big push in the second half, but they need to be less insular. They can’t solve all their problems with players from their own system.

Tension between the offensive players and pitchers maybe?
I really don’t understand these comments at all.
RIP Nick Adenhart, #34
Since we have read several reports about Sosh closing the locker room door
it should be no surprise that players in the clubhouse would be getting kicked in the ass by the team leaders. Lackey has no reason to talk, at the moment. But when he gets his act together, his role will include getting in the face of the relief core.
Of course, that theory does not jibe with his whining about things changing more and more every year.
We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.
I think you are reading too much into this…. I think he says “I cannot call out anyone else since I am screwing up.” I think the author asked him to point out what is wrong with the team and Lack responded that he cannot call out anyone else since his performance is a big contributor to the problem.
I love this team.
probably has to do with the bullpen
and the fact that GA is gone, frankie is gone, we replaced teixeira’s MVP bat with kendry morales and bobby abreu, we replaced orlando cabrera’s leadership with erick aybar’s total lack of consistency and production…..if im a veteran free agent, im pissed too.
lackey can leave to be completely honest. i dont see anything anymore that warrants a fat contract. spend the money on offense and some locker room guys.
time to rebuild. This team has gone STALE
RIP Nick Adenhart
But.... but..... BUT
in the first two weeks of April Kendry was outpreforming Tex!!!!!!!!
THAT HAS TO MEAN STUFF
QUICKLY SOMEONE CHERRY PICK SOME MORE STATS TO LESSEN THE LOSS OF TEX.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
he has no SB
but neither does K-mo….

You can't really bring up Orlando Cabrera
He was gone before the 2008 campaign. And that team won 100 games. Some moves should be made and they should be made asap. This year isn’t over yet, but if some shake ups don’t happen soon, it’ll be too late.

Yeah. I loved OCab, but that was a trigger pulled with perfect timing.
We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.
Players get older
And start to think that they don’t need to be told what to do at all of the time. That plus the Halos are kindda sucking right now doesn’t help.
Lackey's Comments
Interesting. Before the season started and given what happened and didn’t happen in the off-season, I figured this team, due to the transitions ongoing, were a .500 club until the midway point and hopefully would get their act together in the second half. GA being gone is huge, the unfortunate demise of Preston Gomez is huge in the larger scheme of things, but also, I think, to Arredondo.
The bullpen imploding was not something I seriously considered and it shows the glaring weakness on this team: power.
Just a few of my thoughts.
Lets not forget that the tragedy of Nick Adenhart is only 2 months old...
that with the tons of injuries this team has had and their under-performance on the field is going to cause some difficulty with the club…
Do it for Nick '09

I agree...
..and timing is everything. If the “challenges” of this year were spaced out – or if they had been bunched say after 1-2 months of success – then the overall impact may have been muted.
Unfortunately, there was a blizzard of bad news over a 4 week period (Santana, Lackey, Vlad, Adenhart, Escobar, Moseley,…). I just don’t know the overall impact.
Regardless, we had a trip last year to Tampa Bay and got swept. A 4-5 trip to Toronto, Detroit, and TB isn’t great, but it’s not bad either. I remain optimistic.
Turn the page, come home, and sweep the Padres!
Agreed.
I recently lost a loved one and although every day gets easier, I am sure this pain will be with me for years. The team had its heart broken, some players playing well beyond their means and some players not carrying their end. Not to mention that our fabled starting three; Lackey, Escobar, and Santana have come back to sub-par results. Vlad hasn’t shown much since his return and if it weren’t for the efforts of Hunter and Napoli when he was hot and the pitching of Saunders and Weaver, we’d probably be in last place.
I hate to think that this year could already be slipping away, but unless something changes soon, we all will be looking forward to next year real soon.
I think now is the time to not DFA anyone. But certain sending Howie Kendrick down to AAA and dealing Aybar for some bullpen help, could help our offense by bringing up Wood and S-Rod. And if K-Mo continues to slide, we should consider sitting him for a guy like Rivera or Q.
RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09
He has had 7 bad games this month, Morales btw, 3-28 and h has been making good contact
but right at the defenders. He is due to have a HUGE game and go on a hot streak.
Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't get me wrong...
I know you are the master of K-Mo’s heart, but I love the guy too. And I think he’s got good stuff. But when everything falls apart, you have to stop. We need more productive at bats from everyone. I have Morales on two different fantasy teams so I see his daily efforts. I want to see him return more to April form than May form.

Forgive 'cuda. He means well 100% of the time.
It’s just that ‘cuda has inherited his hero’s weakness. He flails against any criticism tossed left-handed…
We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.
that's actually kind of funny.
Because I am left handed. But K Mo got it done tonight.

Lackey just looks so displeased right now
He is getting the heck out of here the first chance he gets. Sad.
Is he upset with the Angels?
Or upset with his own personal performance. If he continues to pitch like he is now, I doubt anyone would want him next year, including the Angels. I think the trade for Peavy would be such a catalyst for this team. If Lackey decides to leave… we have a rotation of Weaver, Saunders, Peavy, Santana, Palmer. If Lackey decides to stay; Palmer gets pumped. Our starting rotation becomes lights out.
RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09
So how would Lackey, Weaver, Saunders, Santana, Palmer be any more lights out than
Peavy in place of Lackey? Dont get your comment!
If Lackey decides to stay its the SAME rotation that we have right now…..so are you calling our rotation Lights out? or are you saying we trade Lackey then he comes back in the Offseason cuz you never mentioned lackey comming back after being traded for Peavy.
Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry... I get a little excited.
Saunders has been pretty good. Weaver has been pitching like an All-Star. Palmer hasn’t been horrible, but Santana and Lackey have. I think that they rushed to get Lackey and Santana back too soon. But if Santana can regain some form from last year and Lackey can get a little more control, I think our rotation would be lights out. With or without Peavy.
I never meant to imply we’d trade Lackey for Peavy. I think we could land Peavy with out giving up MLB Ready Pitching. However, Big John’s in a contract year. “if he leaves at the end of the year, we still have Peavy.” That’s all I really meant.
Sorry for being a little vague. It made sense in my head while I was typing it.
RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09
I think you need to look critically at Peavy
It appears your man crush on Jake is getting in the way of the facts.
Most critical stats on Peavy have been regressing since his Cy season of 2007. Those who watch him regularly have suggested that he isn’t the same pitcher as two seasons ago. His percentage of Quality Starts, for example, has dropped from 82% in 2007, to 70% last season, to 62% this year. He doesn’t suck, of course, and it is easy to find proud accomplishments among his stats as well. The larger questions have to do with his durability and his trends, relative to the paydays he will contractually receive through 2012, and especially if a trade automatically vests his 2013 option of $22M.
Now, of course, he is out until (probably) the All Star break with a tear in an ankle tendon. His trade value to any team just plummeted.
I seriously doubt the Angels were considering trucking 3 or 4 minor league prizes to SD in exchange for Peavy and his bloated contract, but it would seem impossible that Reagins would consider Jake to be a viable rotation presence in 2009, improving over Weaver, Saunders or even Lackey and Santana.
It’s over. Let it go.

Lackey
If Big John is unhappy, he need only look in the mirror. He’s had long stints on the DL for the last two seasons, and is his walk year he is not performing.
His dreams of the mega-free agent contract are out the window unless something drastic changes with his performance. I do not feel sorry for him. He just needs to keep his mouth shut, “man up”, and get the job done. His performance on the field should do the talking.
Lackey looks like a Space Donkey and now pitches like one... good riddance 2010
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
