Lets trade for a White Sox Player!

Rotoworld is saying that due to the recent struggles of the team (2-8 last 10), the aggressive GM (KW) might be forced to make some unpopular, but necessary changes.

Star-divide

He goes on to add, in the quote, that the team is in a "transitional phase." Among the players that could potentially be available are Jermaine Dye, Octavio Dotel, and maybe even Bobby Jenks

Personally, I'm sick of the old power-hitting trade scenarios involving the ChiSox. We don't need Konerko (not mentioned), or Dye--BUT, with Dotel and Jenks potentially becoming available... what do we have to give up to dominantly remake our bullpen for one or both of these guys?

Among the players I wouldn't mind giving up, in no order of preference or package scenario: Figgins, O'Sullivan, TEvans, and one of Aybar/Kendrick. I think we'd all like to shed Quinlan, or GMJ, but that, to me, isn't very realistic. I also would consider giving up one of our inspiring LoA SP's if required, AS LONG AS the Dotel/Jenks contract is longer than the remainder of the year (someone clue me in on that status?).

Any thoughts?

Evans for Dye

and PTBNL who will be GMJ after his no trade clause expires in October!!!

by Rev Halofan on Jun 11, 2009 12:32 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Well realistically...

Among the players you have chosen, I doubt the Chi Sox would want; Evans, O’Sullivan, Quinlan or Matthews. I know the season a isn’t so young and fresh, but I don’t think I’m willing to give up on Howie Kendrick just yet. His value has to be at an all time low. And Kendrick’s problems I believe can be remedied. I don’t know that Quinlan has any value outside of his good attitude and his ability to get into the game after a long delay. Nobody wants Matthews contract, but I think he’s a pretty decent outfielder. I believe we will not be trading him away and he will probably have a more active role when Abreu’s contract runs up. You’d have to think that Figgins stock has been dropping in some areas, namely stolen bases, and growing in other areas, like defense. But what he brings to the table in hitting at the lead off position makes him hard to trade away. And furthermore, if we are unable to re-sign him after this year we will get compensation picks from the team that does sign him.

I saw on MLB TradeRumors that the Angels are listening on offers for the entire infield, including Napoli.

actually

I specifically did not name Q or GMJ because of the same reasons you listed…

And, I didn’t say that they were enough, just that they are players I presume could have some value to other teams, and I wouldn’t mind losing them.

dotel is eliglble for free agency after this season...

and his contract for this year is 6.0 mil & jenks earns 5.6 mil this year and is arbitration eligible. actually either guy would help the bullpen.

it never occured that we could make trades aimed at next year and beyond?

lackey is probably out of here, santana is no sure thing year to year, saunders is good but not great, escobar probably isnt a starter at this point in his career.

so, uh, ya…i find young starting pitching to be pretty appealing in 2010+

fair enough

but I thought the question I raised was concerning what to do for this year. If we’re waiving the white flag, then we need to DFA Quinlan and Matthews, and promote Wood, SeanRod, Evans, Sandoval, Brown, and Arredondo. That would require pawning Vlad, Lackey, and Figgins to the highest bidder, while moving Napoli to FT DH, letting Mathis see if he can find a rhythm, and losing one of Maicer/Aybar/Kendrick.

Trade Mathis any day, but not Napoli. Hey! I just had a thought! Maybe the reason Santana sucks so hard is because he insists on having Mathis catch him. C’mon Voodoo, give Nipples a try. You…. I cant even describe how a GM would laugh in your face, hang up on you, and never ever ever EVER return your calls after making this statement.

Wood = unproven MLB player

Pujols = the best hitter in the MLB

Hanley= the best all around SS in the MLB, five tool player, still young AND under team control

The mere fact that you would ONLY give up a prospect that will probably do nothing but fail to be Adam Dunn in the MLB for the MLBs best two players is so laughable you should watch the Natural 700 times until you understand baseball better.

Sorta

I’m tired of trade “ideas” floated here periodically which consist of bundling together (A) whichever players are out of favor at the moment (Willits, Aybar, Speier, etc) plus (B) some misvalued prospects in SLC or Little Rock, and flipping them for some savior stud who isn’t even on the trading block.

I personally feel Wood will have a bright future with this team, but I would never place Wood and Pujols or Hanley in the same sentence at this point.

Everyone wants to be on the winning side of Milt Pappas for Frank Robinson. What they don’t understand is that most successful trades hurt when they’re made. They usually involve giving up quality to get quality, and it might be necessary to part with Wood or Napoli or Weaver to get a player in exchange who is a difference-maker to the Angels. Volquez for Hamilton comes to mind, where each side gave up something of value to get something of value—but both teams benefited and were able to move forward to the next level. The Reds’ pitching staff was immediately bolstered by Volquez, and we all know what Hamilton has meant to the Rangers.

Count me in.

The two trends among baseball fans that always turn me sour are:

1) an overabundance of faith in the guy on the bench/AAA as opposed to the one that the GM and manager put on the field, and

3) the immediate turning on any great performer as soon as they demonstrate any possible interest in pursuing their own best interest.

Don't give up one of the best lead off men in baseball

I can see us over the next couple years: “damn, if we only had a lead off hitter.”

Angel Pitching (Adenhart), Angel Defense - get past that.

by vladtheimpaler on Jun 12, 2009 4:11 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I can’t understand wanting to trade Figgins or Napoli.
Elite defensive 3B with true leadoff skills and elite speed & Young power hitting catcher who plays a passable D at C.

And you don’t trade Kendrick when his value is at its lowest and his problems ‘could’ be easily remedied.

GMJ with half his contract paid and a 1B for Paul Konerko?

by Ohpityme on Jun 13, 2009 5:00 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Jenks

I seriously doubt the White Sox would trade him.

First of all, he isn’t a free agent until 2012, which means he is arbitration-cheap for another two seasons.

Secondly, while he has a couple of blown saves, he also has 13 successful saves thus far this season. This isn’t like he’s coming apart at the seams and the White Sox need to unload him.

Finally, getting Jenks wouldn’t advance the Angels in regards to fortifying the bullpen. What the team needs is a lesser, dependable arm (or two) to work in the 6th-8th innings and get the game safely to the 9th. Fuentes may not be automatic and he does have 3 blown saves, but he also leads the AL with 16 saves—not Papelbon, Rivera or anyone else. He most likely won’t lead the AL in saves, but in his ugly and inartistic way he is getting his job done.

The team needs an arm or two to reliably deliver that lead to Fuentes. Jenks isn’t the answer.

Maybe we should look at the Giants... Long but easy to read...

I’ve been looking at Brian Wilson of the Giants. Word on McCovey Cove is that Wilson has competition in the closer role… some young guy (I’m thinking like the way we were all talking about Arredondo taking over for K-Rod). Might be the rigt time to jump on him.

Along with Wilson, I really like their FA acquisition of Jeremy Affeldt. He just turned 30 and Wilson is only 27.

My proposed trade:

Erick Aybar, Jeff Mathis, Mark Trumbo, and Terry Evans for Jeremy Affeldt, and Brian Wilson.

My reasons for it:
1. In my opinion Erick Aybar is expendable, especially with him blocking Brandon Wood. Aybar brings youth to the Giants IF at either 2nd or SS. Especially with an aging Renteria who is 34. Plus their current 2nd baseman is unproductive, albeit young at 22, may need another year or two in the minors.

2. Jeff Mathis brings them solid defense at catcher, along with youth to take over Bengie as he is 34 years old. And their back-up catcher is weak.

3. Dealing from a strength at 1st base for us. We have solid production out of Kendry Morales. Granted he’s down to .265BA, but he’s on pace for 24HR, and 88 RBI’s. In is first full year in the majors… hell yes I’ll take that. Trumbo is behind Matt Brown at this point as well, but held in a high regard as a solid prospect with a big upside in the power category. The Giants 1st baseman combined for 2HR this year so far… 2.

4. I hate to give up Terry Evans beause I like the way he plays. He seems like a team first guy. But again, dealing from depth. Sadly by choice on this one due to our stock piling of aging OF’s. Anyhow, Aaron Rowand is 32, and Randy Winn is 35. Their other OF is young and unproductive so far. Evans would start for them today, and I’d be happy to see him get his chance.

Onto the Angels… Jesus, where to begin? I’ll show you MY new 25 man roster:

1. Chone Figgins 3rd
2. Bobby Abreu RF
3. Vladamir Guerrero DH
4. Torii Hunter CF
5. Juan Rivera LF
6. Mike Napoli C
7. Kendry Morales 1st
8. Brandon Wood SS
9. Sean Rodriguez 2nd

SP1: John Lackey
SP2: Ervin Santana
SP3: Jered Weaver
SP4: Joe Saunders
SP5: Matt Palmer
BP1: Darren Oliver (LP)
BP2: Kelvim Escobar (Pending health) / If not, Kevin Jepson
BP3: Brian Fuentes (LP)
BP4: Jeremey Affeldt (LP)
Set-up: Scot Shields
Closer: Brian Wilson

I carry only 11 pitchers with this staff. I have plugged the gaps. We would have 3 different kinds of lefties. Power (Fuentes), finesse (Affeldt), and the crafty veteran (Oliver). Plus, you 4 potential closers, Wilson, Fuentes, Shields, and Escobar (IMO, that order).

Onto the bench:
Bench 1: Bobby Wilson C
Bench 2: Matt Brown 1st/3rd/Corner OF
Bench 3: Macier Izturis IF
Bench 4: Gary Matthews Jr. OF
Bench 5: Ryan Budde C

I carry three catchers in the event Naps is at DH and Wilson got hurt in the game. I like carrying three for insurance. You also may notice a few missing. Bulger was sent down. Speier was out right released. Rich Thompson was sent down. Quinlan was sent down.Kendrick was sent down (Only until he figures out what the hell is wrong. If he makes it back, send down S-Rod, or the 3rd catcher). I really don’t think we need another bat via trade. I believe we the bats internally, specifically Wood, and SRod. Plus Matt Brown is another big bat waiting for the opportunity. I believe our problem is the bullpen. I think the starters are afraid to hand the ball over and they’re trying to be too fine. When you try to be too fine, you make mistakes. Strengthening the bullpen should be priority #1. It affects all facets of our game, and mental make-up.

I'm with you...

If Howie can figure himself out… by all means, bring him back up. I love the guy. If that was to happen, Figgins could be an attractive centerpiece to a trade at the deadline. Move S-Rod to SS, Howie takes back 2nd and Wood moves to 3rd. IMHO, I really believe Abreu could bat leadoff for us. Batting 2nd… whomever is hottest between S-Rod, HK, or B Wood. Vladdy moving to 5th is about as low as I would move him. He can still contribute… it’s just taking a little while for him to heat up.

by matt92130 on Jun 14, 2009 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

A lot of nice thought in that

Some ideas:

Wilson is arbitration-eligible through the 2013 season. It seems unlikely the Giants would unload a player who is so affordable right now—the Giants don’t have an enormous revenue stream in the way the Dodgers and Angels do (though their cable sports contract is helping them). The Giants need cheap players to offset bad contracts like those for Zito and Rowand.

I agree with your attitude regarding Evans’ style of play, but he seems to have hit a wall at the AAA level and has “journeyman” written all over him. Likewise, Trumbo still has a lot of upside, but hasn’t been setting the world on fire at Arkansas.

The contracts for Winn and Molina are both up at the end of this season. I don’t think Mathis is the NL answer to Molina’s bat. The Giants would want Napoli if any of this was to be taken seriously, and that increases the damage to the Angel lineup accordingly.

Finally, Affeldt’s contract is up at the end of next season, and he is the lone lefty in the Giant bullpen. Howry’s deal is over at the end of the season, and Randy Johnson will most likely be gone as well. The Giants will want a veteran arm to add to Lincecum, Cain and Sanchez, since Zito isn’t really the guiding star I think they want their rookies to emulate.

With Howry leaving and Affeldt’s deal up at the end of next season, I would imagine the Giants would be more interested in flipping a guy like Wilson for a starting arm, a grind-it-out guy like Jon Garland or Paul Byrd.

In short, I don’t think your idea of acquiring Wilson is a bad one—it is a great idea—but I don’t think the puzzle pieces you brought to the Giants would cause them to give up Wilson and Affeldt—and that is with the full knowledge that this is the front office which signed those deals for Zito, Rowand and Renteria. I think the Angels would be expected to offer much more, and in that case, the risk/reward balance shifts away from our team.

by George Kaplan on Jun 14, 2009 10:13 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

In case you didn't get the memo...

Shields is injured and isn’t getting any better.

The only player you offer the Giants with upside is Aybar. The rest are all AAAA/bench guys. Sorry but I don’t think its enough for even one of those guys, let alone both.

by dmhead on Jun 14, 2009 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just saw that...

Shields is done for the season.

You really believe Aybar is the only player in the deal with upside? Trumbo isn’t a prospect? Evans isn’t better than what they have in their farm system? Mathis may be better suited facing NL pitchers. I know he can handle any staff. I wouldn’t trade all that for just one of them. I can see subtracting a player for another, and maybe adding a RP. If anything, a Jepson, or Rich Thompson type maybe, but nothing more.

Just got the consensus from McCovey Chronicles

I am crazy and they do not like that trade… not even a little. They want Brandon Wood, and maybe S-Rod. I’m not good with either so I backed out slowly to ensure my safety, haha.

by matt92130 on Jun 14, 2009 8:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think that post

Is one of the best ones in regards to trades. Well thought out. However, I don’t see Quinlan being moved period. The story I hear is that Matt Brown is a younger version of Robb anyway. And obviously Shields won’t be a setup man this year.

I really like Mathis but we have a bigger log jam at the catching spot than the outfield. We have a ton of potential coming up. Unfortunately someone has got to go. And I can’t see dealing Napoli unless its an insane deal.

Great job Matt.
