Observations from AT&T 15 Jun 09

So yesterday I got a chance to see my first ever Angel game (live) and suffice to say it didn't disappoint. The Missus and Baby NorCali joined me on a lil' family get away so to speak. So I thought I would share with you all some of my observations and some pics.

Star-divide

We got to the park about 5:30ish... enough time to see the end of Giants BP and the start of the Halos.

  • Mike Napoli put on a clinic. He was hitting the ball further and harder than anyone on the team. He put about 10 balls into the stands. Many of which were by me in the left field bleachers.
  • Jered Weaver is a class act. He gave many of the flies he shagged to other Angel fans out in the Left Field area and even took the time to sign a few in between AB's
  • Matt Palmer was also doing the same.  Funny Palmer story - These kids (Giants fans) were heckling Palmer and naming off all his stats on the year, his place of birth, different minor league clubs he was with......going on and on. Palmer just laughed it all off, but it seem to bother the other pitcher with him ( I wanna say it was Thompson, but I don't know for sure.....didn't really recognize him) The other pitcher seemed to be asking for better heckles or something....I was kinda far away from where it was happening.

Here are some of the BP shots I got from my seats:

The game itself was crazy (as most of you know). Couple of things I noticed from my seats:

  • Rivera's home run was definitely aided by the wind blowing out.......That sucker kept carrying and carrying.
  • Aybar's homerun was a line drive shot. (Both Rivera's home run and Aybar's homerun were about 20 feet to the right of where I was sitting.) I could see me sitting in the middle of all the Giants fans in a Bright Red Angels hoodie when I watched the replays on Sportscenter.
  • When Torii smacked into the wall it sounded like a car wreck.....no joke.....he hit that sucker hard and everyone in the crowd was went "oooOOOhhhhh" and then cheered like crazy because Bengie somehow managed to lumber into 2nd Base for a double.
  • Lackey's RBI basehit was a thing of beauty....he worked the count and everything, I was totally amazed.
  • Juan Rivera was getting some of the worst heckling I've ever heard from guys out in the bleachers. Some of the lines were lame.... the worst one was something about him taking Derek Jeter's glove when he was with the Yankees and trying to sell it on EBAY.  Those fans were quiet by the time Rivera had smacked his homer and then his double. Juan hit the ball really really hard last night.  He woulda been my choice for Panther, but he wasn't on the voting list.

Glad I got to see Vlad at least pinch hit in the game. I was kinda bummed when I didn't see him in the starting lineup. He smoked that line drive single too......

1000778a_medium via img34.imageshack.us

Lack was amazing on the hill. I started to notice him running out of gas in the 6th.... and I was honestly surprised to see him come out for the 7th. I guess we know why though, because once the blowpen came in the Giants started their comeback. That Sandoval kid is a pretty good hitter for the Giants......and some of the young guys did pretty good too. I heard many fans in my area asking "who are these kids" which I thought was pretty funny, they didnt even know most of their own guys.

All and all the Giants fans were pretty cool, at least the ones I talked too.

One other random sighting note, and I'm wondering if anyone else can help me with this. But I swear I thought I saw the actor Willie Aimes (The guy who played Buddy - from Charles in Charge) walking up the steps in the section where my seats were. Many of the Giants fans were cheering and stuff when he showed up, but I just wasn't sure. Maybe Sam Miller knows something about this (if he reads this) This guy though was a dead ringer for the man.....lol my first run in with a I'm guessing D or E list celebrity.

AT&T is a great park, and I would recommend it to anyone that is in the area. Nice seat prices, but kinda cold... and I'm glad the first Angels game I ever saw was a win... I was almost disappointed by the bullpen once again, but alas the Halos pulled it out... the only thing that was truly missing was the sight of the Halo lit up after the win. But this scoreboard pic works as a good substitute.

Nice, congrats, thanks for the pics

And I’m glad the Giants fans didn’t beat you senseless.

On TV I heard the Giants fan’s applause when Torii was walking off. That was good.

Angel Pitching (Adenhart), Angel Defense - get past that.

That is so mean

I’m telling Aybar what you said.

Anyone know how I can get ahold of Aybar?

I don't think some people will ever get

It was Mariano Rivera’s cousin and ‘never-has-been’ Ruben Rivera who stole Jeter’s equipment and not the Angels’ Juan Rivera.

Palmer was a Giants farmhand for a longer time than he probably would have liked, so maybe the he knew the fans heckling him.

Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?

I didnt know about the Rivera thing......

which I thought it was odd……the guy was sluring his words anyways…..I had to have someone else translate for me lol

It was a "find" by shiftyeyedgoat fan member sometime last year.

He made a fanpost out of it and it has been HH lore ever since. You especially will probably have a field day with it. Go read the comments under each baseball team, there are nuggets everywhere. http://www.1866baseball.com/los-angeles-angels-of-anaheim-baseball-team.html

Somehow...

…you’ve got to add comments on;
1) The shirt and puppet he’s wearing. Apparently, he didn’t know that thers’s another AL team called the Detroit TIGERS. Is he cheering for them too? (I know…the colors don’t match…it’s probably a Japanese team. But still, if the Red Sox were playing Detroit, it would be hard to figure which one he supports.)
2) How alcohol can make a fool out of anyone.

Rec’d, cause it took 10 minutes to stop laughing! “Baseball stuck to my hat glove”…too funny!

Hey Guys!

Great post NorCal. I’m drinking at my office with my coworkers and then we’re off to the park for the game tonight. Needless to say I’m going with a bunch of Giants fans. It should be a good game and I hope I don’t get my arse kicked.

GO HALO’S!!!!

I thought Sean did some good things.....and some not so...

Nifty turn on the DP, looked real fluid….no wasted motion…..

Of course I was stoked when he blasted that HR…..

and him hitting into a DP wasnt cool……..but it was about 1 ft from being a single…….so all in all I think the kid will be just fine especially if he provides some much needed power

I was born in Culver City

but my dad was a dodger fan…..and used to take me to the Latrine every year till I was about 10….finally I told him I liked the Angels more..(because I wanted to be different from my family)…..needless to say he wasnt happy and we stopped going to games.

Then I moved up north with my mom…….never had any money to go to games and no one else I knew was an Angel fan.

Then after I was 18 I joined the Military and was over seas for 5 years……now Im a civilian again and financially stable enough to where I can afford to try and make a couple games a year. Now I just have to manage my work schedule……..but I’ll try to go to another in Oakland before the year is over….we’ll see.

what city are you in?

i’m in Sacto and most of my friends are Giants fans, albeit some are pretty classy Giants fans and others not so much. for example, game 7 in the 2002 WS a giants fan invited me over to his house to watch the game, fed me dinner and beer, and said congratulations after Erstad caught the last out.

while another one cursed and refused to buy me lunch—our bet for game 7.

I'm glad you wrote this.

We lived in the East Bay for 9 years, from 92 to 2001. We went to A’s games sometimes just to see baseball games, and they were fun to watch. Our older daughter had the Bash Brothers poster in her room, but when the Angels were in town we were all Angels fans even though it was hard to keep track of what was going on back then, pre-internet.

Bundle up if you go to a game in the colosseum because it can be very cold there too, but you probably already know that. The last time we were there (before we moved back South) it was cold and drizzly, and a chunk of the stadium broke off and hit a bunch of people in our section. the ushers herded us up into the restaurant to watch the rest of the game. No one was hurt so it was great.

Oakland Coliseum

Saw a few baseball games, an NFL playoff game, and a few rock concerts there (rock concerts were called “A Day on the Green”).

Pre-internet I would read every box score in the paper, top tens, and wait for the Sunday paper when they had the top 100+ batters and pitchers. I could follow (almost) every Angel. Tsk, tsk, no excuse for not keeping track of the Angels! :)

Angel Pitching (Adenhart), Angel Defense - get past that.

Well,you're a better man than I am.

  Oh, wait, I’m not a man! ;-)

I did that at first but I’ll swear that the Chron didn’t even print the AL results some of the time (the A’s were ignored), and after 9 years I’d look at the Angels and ask my husband, “When/where did they get that guy?”. He read the San Jose paper at work so he knew what was going on with the team better than I did. The strikes, including that last strike in 94 almost soured us on baseball in general, but not the Angels. Never the Angels.

We were really busy with our two girls’ school stuff during those years and getting to a game became a challenge, so much that we knew the A’s players better than we did the Angels during those years. We listened to the games on the radio most of the time.

We moved back here in the summer of 2001, as soon as the younger girl graduated HS. Closed escrow on the house in Castro Valley the day after graduation, and we were out the door. Got cable that summer with the sole intention of getting to know the Angels again.

I did the same thing.........

I would chart how many Angels I found in the sunday paper each week….and put them up on my wall. LOL

Ok, you're both better men than I am ;-)

Which paper were you reading back then? The Daily Review was the local one but I couldn’t afford two and needed the Chron for my business.

Nice Picks

Thanks for sharing them with us.

A thought for the Rev. Would it be possible to add a section to put the fan posts that people make of their visits to other stadiums to see the Angels play. It might be nice to have one place to get a view of the other stadiums. I know i posted one last year from my visit to Citizens Bank Ballpark

come sit in the bleachers sometimes...

… when Hunter hit the wall it was disgusting to be sitting where i was, cell phones taking pictures, an mvp chant started in mockery and a ridiculous amount of cursing…

but I noticed some nice gains strength wise because of it……I’ll probably use that workout again in the future it’s not bad for a change of pace.

I was at this game as well....

sitting right behind the emerald nuts sign that Hunter ran into. We had to freeze frame the ESPN highlights of the game when we got home to see the panic in my face right before Torii hit the wall. Its always nice to sit in the bleachers when Zito is pitching and taunt real giants fans for their 17.5 million dollar “star”…

Perhaps you've heard of me from the pages of Sports Illustrated...
