Edmonds into the HOF?
http://www.dugoutcentral.com/blog/?p=2498
If Jim Edmonds gets into the Hall of Fame, do you think he go in as an Angel or a Cardinal? ...Gary Carter had a similar dilemma. He got his ring with the Mets, but he played the peak years of his career with Montreal and is represented at Cooperstown as a member of Les Expos. ...I also wonder if Edmonds' HOF placard would show the man's seemingly perpetual sour puss scowl...

He's borderline
I’m not sure the comparison to Carter is valid though. Edmonds played more seasons with the Cards and had his better offensive years there. If he goes in, there’s no reason he shouldn’t go in as a Cardinal.

I say put him in! But probably as a Cardinal. Lot more games played there, and one helluva five-year peak. Kind of crazy he still doesn’t have a job this year.
Saving countless runs with my defense.

He ain't going.
Standards are getting higher and higher every year. If Blyleven ain’t going, Edmonds ain’t going.
The Gary Carter decision actual has some history to it. IIRC, prior to Carter players got to choose. Nolan Ryan kind of made a joke out of that when he selected to go in as a Ranger instead of an Angel. MLB then stepped in with Carter and took the choice away from players, enabling the hapless Expos to finally realize a contribution out of all that talent they prospected and developed.
Again, IIRC. If I got that wrong, I am sure the responses will be fast and furious.
Brandon Wood is slated for 2010, and no amount of whining by us is gonna change that. So evolve, already!

Different era ...
Rice played when men were men, and faced so many great pitchers … and little whiny crybaby prima donna girlies like Bonds and A-Rod weren’t around to dilute the achievements of real studs like Michael Jack Schmidt and Reginald Martinez Jackson. It will be very, very hard to discern the real athletes from the Juiced Fakers when voters have to decide for the next … 10 – 20 years or so. God help them.
That being said, I have no opinion on whether Edmonds gets in or not. I think he’s a jackass, but if he didn’t juice, maybe the gods will look favorably upon him.

I thought the change in policy was because Wade Boggs negotiated into his contract that he would go in as a Ray, despite playing only one season with them. HOF was not happy.

by hauldog on Jun 2, 2009 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If Blyleven ain't going, nearly nobody who plays today should be going.
Edmonds is actually pretty underrated, as his fielding and hitting came back to star status after the trade to the NL. Good arm, too.

He did all his best work for the Cards, so them
Also, it’s a bit suspect to compare raw numbers from the post-‘94 era than with just about any other era outside the early 1930s. He’s got a legitimate outside case (aren’t too many centerfielders who were as great as him for as long), but it does not rely on comparing his counting stats to pre-’94 dudes.
by mattwelch on Jun 2, 2009 3:11 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't think Edmonds
is a hall of Famer
Here is the link to the Baseball-Reference page comparing his stat to those who are similar. None of them are Hall of Famers except for Duke Snider
RIP Nick. The Angels and their fans will always remember you.
by billhune on Jun 2, 2009 3:35 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Tread carefully w/ similarity scores
Defensive position is a huge consideration, and the system overweighs counting stats while underweighing OPS+ (which adjusts for era). Colavito, for example, was long considered a borderline HoF case, but he was never a Gold Glove CF.
by mattwelch on Jun 2, 2009 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I am not discounting his defense
I just don’t think he is a HoFer. I put the link in there for reference, to show others with similar stats. I think his defense is enough to make up for his offensive numbers, which I don’t feel are up to HoF standards.
RIP Nick. The Angels and their fans will always remember you.

For a Plus, Plus defender at a premium position?
Really?
I think he should probably get it – but will probably be overshadowed by other, more gaudy numbers from this era. He had a massive peak and compares favorably to others.
Player A: .377 OBP/.528 SLG/132 OPS+/380+ HR
Player B: .408 OBp/.540 SLG/149 OPS+/440+ HR
One player is a first baseman and one player is a center fielder.
They are contemporaries of each other and played against each other in the same division.
Player A is Edmonds and Player B is Jeff Bagwell.
Bagwell is the better overall player – and .50 points of OPS is nothing to sneeze at, but Edmonds was a monster in CF, and there is no way that he shouldn’t be in the conversation with regards to the HOF.
Edmonds numbers are probably good enough for a CF’er and if any institution rewards Jim Rice with enshrinement Jim Edmonds certainly needs to be there too. No doubt in my mind.
RIP Nick...

Rice and Edmonds

Maybe I missed the part of Edmonds’ career when he played for the Red Sox?
If Rice had worn, say, an Astros uni his entire career, he’s still have to buy a ticket to get into the Hall of Fame. East Coast bias is powerful, and even with that, Rice was admitted only on his final year of eligibility. Rice was a beneficiary of having played before Eastern sportswriters for all his career, but Edmonds would not be.

Same story but ONCE UPON A TIME...
I was like twelve years old and waited after an Angels game for Edmonds to come out to get an autograph. He was my favorite player at the time. Finally, Edmonds walks out, past the crowd of fans, with two girls under each arm, straight into a limo waiting for them.

He's a borderline Hall of Famer
If he put up the same numbers playing in the 1980s or before, he has a stronger shot.
As is, his offensive numbers are probably inflated due to the era he played in, but he is in the Hall of Very Good.
I remember reading a story about him and a teammate named Tim Salmon coming into camp 25 pounds heavier one spring – I think it was their breakout seasons of 1995.
The year before Edmonds was a light-hitting ‘utility’ first-baseman/outfielder who didn’t show the considerable power he possessed during his prime years.
It seems like out of the four Angels’ prominent outfielders in the late 1990s [Edmonds Salmon, GA, Erstad], Edmonds was the guy who had the most ‘flair’ or ‘style’ that either was enduring or just pissed you off.
In his latter years with the Angels, there were grumblings from some fans was that he had ‘bad body language’ during his at-bats.
Despite highlight reel quality plays in centerfield, I also heard/read grumblings about Edmonds making plays look more difficult than they would seem just to showboat.
Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?

If Derek Jeter is allowed in
then so is Edmonds.
If Jim Rice is allowed in, so is Edmonds.
If Phil FUCKING Rizzuto is allowed in, so is Edmonds.

Interesting aside
that I just noticed…both Rice and Edmonds had exactly 382 career DINGERS.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Jun 3, 2009 11:14 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rice had 600 more career hits, 300+ more RBIs, higher BA
Edmonds had more doubles, higher OPS and could play great defense. I still think voters go mainly on pure offensive stats not to mention Eastcoast bias.
Angels in 09!

Not just better OPS
but a better OPS+, too.
Keep in mind that his better counting stats are largely linked to his nearly 1,600 more at-bats, too. Edmonds edges him out in AB/HR and RBI/HR ratio.
Add to the list 8 gold gloves while we’re at it.
