Angels Traffic Jam Strands John Lackey, Dodgers Take Final Fwy Series Game

Final Score in Los Angeles of Anaheim: Dodgers: 5, Angels 3

The Angels had the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw on the ropes. The bases were loaded, there were no outs and Bobby Abreu was up, Torii Hunter was on deck, Vlad Guerrero was holding a bat in the dugout. John Lackey had just allowed the only run of the game up to that point in the top of the 5th inning and it was the Angels turn to answer back. Chone Figgins was on First Base to turn even a single into a bases-clearing episode if the ball bounced their way.

But Bobby Abreu grounded a 2-0 pitch weakly to Kershaw for a 1-2-3 Double Play and the inning ended without a run being scored.

Complete idiot Joe Morgan announcing later in the game when Bobby got a weak, meaningless single "And that is why Bobby Abreu is a .300 hitter." By sucking, Joe? Or by gutlessly choking?

In the bottom of the 8th with 2 outs and 1 run across, the Angels were down 4-1. Jonathan Broxton had just walked Gary Matthews Jr. Erick Aybar struck out weakly. And that was that, Brandon Wood still in Triple A, the Angels a half game back in the AL West, the Freeway Series for the 2009 season a split... at least until October.

its just one game

give him a break. everyone has a bad day. Kershaw is a good pitcher vs lefties and Bobby proved why. Abreu will be just fine. By the way Adam Dunn is hitting .263

HR dont win ball games...

*insert obligatory comment from Rev about how I should take that up with Tim Salmon and…Brad Fullmer?

i agree with you

and like Dunn, Abreu has many at-bats where he waits “for his pitch” and then ends up sitting on the bench after it never comes but a strike does.

by Rev Halofan on Jun 21, 2009 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Heres some stats for this thread....

Other than Dunn’s 18 HR’s to Abreu’s weak 3….the two are very
similar this year. Also, it shows that the horrible DP that Abreu grounded into today with the bases jammed doesnt happen a whole bunch for him.

Dunn: Has struck out 72 times with 54 BB in 291 AB’s. An OBP of .399. with 48 RBI’s. He has grounded into only 3 double plays.

Abreu: Has struck out only 37 times with 36 BB in 259 AB’s. An OBP of 394. with 35 RBI’s. He has grounded into only 4 double plays.

I suppose an arguement could be made that Dunn’s superior power makes him better offensive support but he also K’s a WHOLE bunch. I dont really see a dramatic difference here.

the home runs obviously arent enough

because his team is on pace to have the worst recored in MLB history

by dmoney2741 on Jun 21, 2009 9:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

well thats because his supporting cast sucks.........

but throw him in place of Abreu and I would venture to guess we are in first place by a couple games………but….thats just pure speculation on my part.

really?

I understand the necessity for power but his power puts in first place? It just seems like a very dramatic, unlikely difference.

but maybe not…

we're only half a game out of first.....

considering some of our games…….a home run or two would have been the whole difference…….it’s the great equalizer.

It was a 2-0 pitch that Bobby swung at

I remember because I thought no way a singles hitter is given the green light against a guy that practically walked the bases loaded.

It was a bad decision to give him the green light.

And Bobby did a horrible horrible job w/ the green light. It wasn’t even like he was trying to drive it. He was just trying to make contact.

by MH252525 on Jun 21, 2009 8:25 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I also was stunned that he swung

That was obviously the worst possible result. If he had been patient, he probably would have walked, and the whole game would have been different. When the Doyers escaped that inning with their 2-0 lead intact, it was so deflating.

I'd like to see Scioscia among the candidates.

Not pinch-hitting for Bobby after his first two overmatched at bats was something less than bold. Keeping him in the game after the double play was even worse.

Lefties hitting under .150 against Kershaw. Bobby showed why that is. His first two Ks were pants around the ankles bad.

One of the few times I was calling for GMJ by the third inning.

by Turks Teeth on Jun 21, 2009 8:29 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd like to see Scioscia also but for leaving Lackey in

WTF, I can see him starting the 8th, but when first guy gets on base, he should have been taken out, he was already at 103 pitches.

OK, he got the DP but end result, 2 more hits including Loney’s HR.

Booo!

Love how your biggest rival isn’t even in your division… Angel fans need to stop hatting on the Dodgers and worry about the American League… If you can fill up your own stadium seats with your own fans you wouldn’t have to put up with the crowds from LA coming to support their team. Dodger Fans don’t even care about the Angels… they care about what they are doing and what their other division rivals are doing… Dodgers have shown they are the team to beat this year Winning series against key teams… Even without power hitting!!!!! Get over the dodger loss Cause it means nothing to you!!! Especially because the first place Rangers also Lost!

Worry about getting first place back or wild card!!!!

Bad Loss turn the page

Texas is off tomorrow so a win for us v.s the Rockies tomorrow will put the Angels in first by percentage points. Its not like the Dodgers suck we were competitive the entire series with the best team in baseball, so i have no reason to believe we wont do will in Colorado

I love how Angels Fans are the least knowledgeable in all of baseball!!! You need to improve your comprehension skills.

dmoney2741 did not write that the Dodgers suck. In fact, he called them the best team in baseball.

BOTG? How about Naps swinging at the first pitch in the 9th??

Or how about the ump calling a homerun that didnt seem to be. Or how about Kobe, totally rooting for the Dodgers.

Or how about National Television as the BOTG. I have a theory that when the Angels are on National television they suck. Its proven so the last two years of the playoffs. And as far as I remember, every time we are the ESPN game of the week….we lose.

I wouldnt even know how to begin to figure out our win percentage over the past 3 years when on national television but I have a feeling were below 500.

Erick Aybar: 0-3, 2K

Aybar’s season line for this year (not even taking today into account): 281/314/393
Brandon Wood, so far at SLC: 305/374/606

I know that the PCL != the major leagues, but wouldn’t it have been nice to have a power threat playing in the middle infield today?

Years lates, Clutch still needs to chill.

I'm on the same boat as you

I was atthe game and his whole at bat I was saying “come on pole get a bAsehit” when he struck out I called him a worthless piece of shit and all the angels looked at me like I was crazy!! Man is he the biggest worthless price of shit there is. Broxton had no fear because even if he made a mistake shitbar wouldve just got a lousy single!!

First we had a Salmon and now we have a Trout, let's see the same results.

LACKEY'S SOUR LUCK

BOTG=SOSCH

Why?

1. QUINLAN in the line-up
2. S. RODRIGUEZ instead of IZTURIS
3. Allowed Lackey to continue the Doyer’s hit parade

When Soth pinch hit Morales

why did he have him hit from the right side? He sucks from the right.

I understand the whole lefty vs righty thing, but it’s not like a left handed batter can’t possibly hit left handed pitching. IMO Morales should stop being a switch hitter and just hit from the left full time. As a righty he’s an automatic out.

RIP Nick. We will miss you!
