Experiencing residual pain in his right triceps after throwing a bullpen session on Sunday, Ervin Santana has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Sean O’Sullivan, who won his Major League debut in San Francisco on Tuesday night, once again will take Santana’s rotation spot on Tuesday night against the Rockies at Angel Stadium. The Angels recalled him from Triple-A Salt Lake.

If Palmer would just throw strikes, he’d have been fine.

Also our offense still sucks

by Rev Halofan on Jun 22, 2009 8:46 PM PDT up reply actions

our team excels at it.........

Which is why when people say…….the angels lead the league in hitting, it’s a misleading stat…..same with the runs per game stat…….

because heck sure we “avg” 5 runs per game…..or close to it……but when you score 9 runs for 3 games in a row…..then follow it up with 8 runs over your next 4 games……sure you got 35 runs in those 7 games…..but there’s a big difference between 9 runs avg in 3 games…..then averaging 2 over your next 4.

You win alot more games scoring 9 than 2 obviously.

Chopper is like

how Kevin Gregg used to be … used to mop up the mess and pretty mediocre at it. {sorry Ashley}. I was shocked when Gregg became a fairly successful closer.

Torii Hunter: Best Halo Ever.

Me too

He was awful with us.

by Brody on Jun 22, 2009 8:59 PM PDT up reply actions

HUH

are you serious????

His ERA+ was ABOVE league average for us at 103 during his 4 years with the Angels. So better than average pitcher, making the league minimum. Sign me up for that please.

by MH252525 on Jun 22, 2009 9:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Four question marks?

Perhaps awful is not the right word, but my comment is not that far off. You just pointed out that he was essentially league average. Given that we had the best bullpen in the league while he was with us, I would not be surprised if he was our worst reliever during that time.

by Brody on Jun 22, 2009 9:05 PM PDT up reply actions

So by that logic is Aybar

an All-Star since he’s hitting circles around Kendrick and Maicer?

by MH252525 on Jun 22, 2009 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions

That is not a good analogy

But I will say this: I would be surprised to see the worst reliever / mop-up man on any team — even the one with the best bullpen — to emerge from several years of that to become a successful closer.

by Brody on Jun 22, 2009 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not saying

that Gregg doing even better than he already had wasn’t a bit of a suprise, it was. But I’m just saying you have to compare him to the league, Not the Angels bullpen. Don’t penalize him for his efforts just because Scot Shields was busy being in one of like the best 5 year stints EVER as a reliever, or that they had K-Rod who will be going to the HOF.

by MH252525 on Jun 22, 2009 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions

This is what I remember about Kevin Gregg

…. now that I think about it some … he would pitch okay, then we’d need him for long relief in some meaningless game and he would do really well. Well enough to deserve a look in the rotation. And when that chance would be given to him, he’d suck. Am I mistaken?

Torii Hunter: Best Halo Ever.

by LazorkoRules on Jun 22, 2009 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Hold on!

After his first year, over a three year period he posted an ERA of above 4.2 and was 9-8

Not “awful” … just mediocre. And converting a pitcher with that sort of record over THREE years of pretty extensive use into a “trust him with the ninth” kind of a guy is pretty remarkable.

Torii Hunter: Best Halo Ever.
