Road Tripper Looking For Advice

I finish the school year on Friday and immediately go to Pittsburgh for a weekend of baseball watching in PNC Park with friends and family.  Following PA, I hit up Cincinnati and Milwaukee for two more MLB games, then go to Beloit to watch the Kernels take on the Snappers, then to Appleton for another Midwest League game, and finally to Cedar Rapids to see the Kernels at home on the Fourth of July.

I haven’t been to any of these cities, so I have a request for anyone who knows them: what are the can’t miss attractions, food and otherwise? What is your advice for the curious traveler?

Field of Dreams

While on your way to see the Kernels in Cedar Rapids, stop by the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, IA. I was there last week, and you will not regret it. But watch the movie again before you go.

Dyersville in off Highway 20, 25 miles west of Dubuque, IA.

In Remembrance of Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, Henry Pearson. Heal soon Jon Wilhite.

Is it everything

I’m imagining it to be? Am I going to be stuck in a miles long traffic jam?

by rghan on Jun 23, 2009 9:19 AM PDT up reply actions

LOL

No, but wouldn’t that be amazing. I went there during a thunderstorm and there were still cars there, but none backing up rural farm roads. For a baseball fan, its a must see. The corn is still growing in the outfield, but its only a few feet high at this moment. You’ll see Shoeless Joe coming for miles…

Second

Last time I was at PNC they had a big ole shop inside the stadium. Go with the spicy capicola.

But I'd like to add that

If possible, you should skip Primanti in the stadium and hit the original shop in the Strip District for that “authentic” Pittsburgh experience.

Excellent advice

I was going to ask if the stadium branch makes the cut

by rghan on Jun 23, 2009 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

First and foremost I agree you should go to Primanti Bros.

but if somehow you find yourself still hungry (impossible with Primanti Sandwich) and looking for another gastronomic adventure try “The O” (Original Hot Dog Shop) or comically known as the “The Dirty O”. There is one over by Pitt and Carnegie Mellon U. Get the O Fries – after the fries and a primanti sandwich top it off with some Iron City and your gut will feel like a steel mill.

Since you’re either in school are just graduating I think your stomach can handle it. I sent some old co-workers there and they weren’t right for weeks.

And if you can’t find either place just ask, “can YINS tell me where Primanti Bros. is?”

Beloit?

Dude, seriously? I grew up about 10 miles from Beloit. The best thing about Beloit is when you get to leave Beloit. There are NO can’t-miss attractions in Beloit. Unless you really want to go to a crackhouse. I can see going to a game there, but stay in Madison and hit State Street if you’re going up to Appleton the next day.

Milwaukee has quite a few good attractions. I haven’t been to the new Harley-Davidson museum, but it’s supposed to be quite nice (if you like Harleys). And the Art museum by the lake is nice too. There’s also the Lakefront Brewery, if that’s more your thing. (Screw the art! Bring me beer!) You could do the Miller brewery tour, but the Lakefront brewery is nicer. The Riverwalk downtown has some nice bars/restaurants/etc. Get some German food at Mader’s on 3rd street. Beer and Brats are a must at Miller Park. (Miller Park is a very nice place to watch a game, too. Just make sure you cheer for the Crew.) I assume you’re not staying at the Pfister Hotel downtown, but if you are, watch out for the visiting team and the ghosts.

Cincinnati

Pub crawl:
Hofbrauhaus, Rockbottom, I think Barrelhouse is still there, BrewWorks maybe (more a store if I recall correctly)
I moved away several years ago, so I can’t give you a recent review or more names. I do have friends who can recommend good beer places if you are into micro-brews

for amazing ribs/food….Montgomery Inn. It’s right on the river overlooking KY. Reservations are mandatory at peak times or you can sit in the bar but it gets crowded. It’s also very close to the Red’s Stadium (whatever it’s called). I would put this as a MUST GO because it’s that good.

there’s always Skyline Chili as a lunch one day.

The zoo is also pretty nice. There’s also King’s Island, riverboat rides, and oh, almost forgot, Coney Island.

Major construction

…going on around Great America(n?) Ballpark in Cincy. I was there yesterday looking for a place to park to stop by the Reds HOF, but the best parking I found was a long way off and I needed to get back on the road.

By the way, NE Indiana to Atlanta is a LONG trip.

Everytime I read this thread title

I get “Day Tripper” stuck in my head. It’s not a bad song; it just keeps sticking around.
