Angels Jeff Mathis Keys Rockie Road Back to First Place
Final Score in Los Angeles of Anaheim: Rockies 3, Angels 4
On Jeff Mathis giveaway jersey night at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Angels Catcher Jeff Mathis scored two runs, including the tying run in the bottom of the 8th. Erick Aybar was right behind him, scoring on a bases-loaded single by Right Fielder Bobby Abreu. Mathis also nailed a runner at the plate BAREHANDED late in the game. He was nails on a night when the Colorado Rockies' Ubaldo Jimenez was on his game. Don't let that scary name stop you from putting this stud on your fantasy team. Despite the L he got down the street from Disneyland tonight, it was his team that let him down on back-to-back poor fielding of bunts in the 8thh inning. Those muffs on the grass set up the bases-loaded opportunity for Abreu.
In a postgame interview with Jose Mota, Mathis acknowledged that the jersey giveaway pumped him up and reveled in the fact that for the first time since opening day, the Angels are in first place in the American League West, albeit tied with the Texas Rangers.
Kevin Jepsen got the win in relief, one of four Angel relievers to pitch a scoreless inning in succession of starter Sean O'Sullivan. Brian Fuentes got his 20th save. Talk about balls to the wall, he did it against a slew of old teammates who knew every trick in his book. But Superman was behind the plate for the Halos and in the end, Ubaldo's Green Lantern had nothing on him.

The beers are symbolic of how many balls he needs to throw before getting the first strike in.

Mathis for sure
Bobby had the big hit. Fuentes was nails in the 9th. But Mathis did it all — sick defensive play on the block at the plate, stopped numerous balls in the dirt, 2 hits, a walk to start the rally, and jersey giveaway.
As I said in the game thread, if all that is not panther, Mathis will never get it.

It’s part Dracula, part T-Rex, part Terminator.
The opiate of the masses is spectator sports. What else explains the astounding fact that millions of seemingly intelligent human beings feel that the athletic exertions of total strangers are somehow consequential for themselves?
