Angels Pitching Staff and Stats

Earlier in the year the Angels starters had the best ERA while the bullpen had the worst.  So I asked a friend of mine at Stats Inc.  if he could find out if any team in baseball has made the playoffs in this scenario.  This is what he found out for me:

Everything is since 1954 (as far back as I can go for Starter/Relief ERA)

* No team has ever led MLB in starters ERA and been in last in relief ERA

* No team has ever led AL in starters ERA and been in last in relief ERA

* No team has ever led NL in starters ERA and been in last in relief ERA

1 team since 1954 has had the worst bullpen ERA in majors and still made the playoffs (1997 Seattle Mariners – lost in first round)

3 teams since 1954 have had the worst bullpen ERA in AL and still made the playoffs (1990 Boston, 1997 Seattle and 2005 Boston – all lost first series)

No NL team since 1954 has had worst bullpen ERA and still made playoffs

Uh...

If we have got “No team has ever led MLB.etc., etc. etc…..”

Doesn’t it follow that “No team has ever led AL or NL etc., etc., etc.”??

Unless Stats no longer considers the NL and AL as being a part of MLB…

We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.

logic...

way overrated.

This season just seems jinxed. If it can go wrong, it does

what this appears to imply is

1) that either our bullpen gets dramatically better, or
2) we plan on a record breaking post season, or
3) we’re screwed

Not necessarily

I don’t know that our bullpen has to get dramatically better to avoid being the worst in baseball (or even the AL). Cupie’s information does not indicate how many teams with a below average or bad (but not the worst) bullpen made the playoffs.
