Could the Angels be looking at Dan Uggla?
In the article, it mentions notjhing regarding the Angels being interested. But directly after Uggla, was Freddy Sanchez of the Pirates and it is said that it could be a big upgrade for the Angels. Now, I'm not into Freddy Sanchez as he's already 31 years old, but Dan Uggla is intriguing.... he's on pace for 30 homers, and 100 RBI's. Granted his avergae is .226 and OBP is .336, but those power numbers make you take a second look.
Could Howie Kendrick return to form like we all hope he does? Yes. Is it guaranteed that he will? No. Please people, don't tell me why the Angels will never deal with the marlins again because everyone here knows the reasons or excuses. Instead, I'll ask what is fair value for Uggla and what could the Angels part with and still keeping the team in tact for a title run?
I'd consider trading Brandon Wood for him. Uggla has proven it at the MLB level, Wood has not. Wood, Aybar, and a AAA arm (Not one of our top guys... someone projected as a low #2 future rotation type). Who's to say Uggla couldn't move to 3rd if HK picks himself back up. Without a SS beyond Izturis, Figgins can play SS. I think that's fair trade value.

With a .230 average
he should be carrying a Dunn-like OBP to be considered all that valuable. Though I did feel really bad for him making 3 errors at the All-Star game last year. Pass.

Why would you trade Wood + others for Uggla?
When you could just call Wood up and keep those other players as well?

I swear we had this exact same post about a year ago...
…if Tony Reagins makes ANY trade that either A) does not include a solid relief pitcher or B) is not a complete steal of another team’s middle infielder (I’m talking like the trade that brought Gasol to the Lakers), I will be sorely disappointed in his abilities. He will be less Ninja and more grasshopper…without legs.
Seriously, we do not need another middle infielder.

Great Timing
For a post about how the team needs more hitting after they score 12 runs….
Seriously – the pitching staff is a hospital ward of injuries. If there’s a trade to be made, let it be for pitching. Like it or not, Soth has the uncanny ability to squeeze runs out of this line-up. What he needs is more pitching so that the team can gain 8 or 9 more wins this season by locking down the opponent.

A set-up man would be nice
It’s incredible to be saying that with respect to a team that has Shields, Dondo, Speier, and Escobar. But, alas, that is what we really need.

Looking at Uggla? does he have something on his face?
Get Aybar off this team. Now.

Sean Rod
Rodriguez can be exactly the same player Uggla is now. And Wood will be better. Don’t trade our prospects. Find a place for them in the lineup.

Why would you trade Wood...
when he has the potential to be better than Uggla? I’d do that deal right now if I was the Marlins because:
1. Wood will probably be better than Uggla at his age
2. Wood is still under control for 6 more years
3. Wood is much cheaper than Uggla
Also, we have two 2nd basemen that have very good upside already (Kendrick and Sean Rodriguez). If anything I’d rather have S-Rod starting at 2nd base.

I hear ya...
But my thought process was Uggla is proven at the MLb level and we know what we’re getting. No one knows what Wood will do in the majors. Plus, I’m sure Kendrick still has trade value so he could likely fetch another solid bullpen arm.

three way deal...
giants get uggla
marlins get howie & willits
angels get a solid young arm
by thejd on Jun 27, 2009 2:21 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I like that idea much better...
we get the pitching help we need and give up a very dispensable Willits. I would hate to give up Howie, but honestly I’m not really sure who will be the better big leaguer at this point, Howie or S-Rod. I’m willing to give S-Rod a try though.

I could rock with this
Get Aybar off this team. Now.

No
Why should they?
Uggla has two more years of arbitration, then is a free agent in 2012. Since his breakthrough rookie year, his strikeouts have increased dramatically, and while his number of BB increased as well, his BA has fallen since 2006. More disturbingly, his defensive talent hasn’t significantly improved as he finds himself in his fourth full season. The hallmark of Angel teams in the Scioscia era is defense, and Uggla brings none to his game.
Wood, on the other hand, hasn’t completed even one season of service on this FA clock. The Marlins would be stooges not to take the deal, and Reagins should properly be fired for making such an offer. Wood is only 24 now, while Uggla was 26 in 2006 when he entered the bigs. Comparing one with the other in terms of future value is a loser’s game if you’re viewing them straight up, and pure nonsense if you’re proposing Wood, Aybar and an arm for Uggla.
Oh, and as far as Uggla moving to 3B, did you even notice that the Marlins considered that when MigCab was traded to Detroit before the start of 2008, and the team abandoned the idea after watching Uggla work out at the position? As bad as he is defensively at 2B, he’s lost at 3B.

thank you.
Now can we just let this silly post die already? No offense, matt, but this has been one of the worst trade propositions I’ve seen on here in quite a while.
