Standings Since April 25
Since the morning of April 26, when we woke up in last place, at 6-11, 5.5 games out of first place, we've gone 35-21. That's the best record in baseball since then. Here's a list:
LAA 35-21 .625
BOS 35-23 .603
LAD 35-23 .603
TBR 35-24 .593
COL 35-24 .593
NYY 34-24 .586
DET 33-25 .569
TEX 32-25 .561
And yes, since swapping Jeff Weaver for Jered in the rotation on July 3, 2006, we are (once again!) playing exactly .600 baseball -- 288-192.
Can we keep it up? Not .625, I don't think. And .600 is a hard, hard dollar when two-fifths of your rotation is Matt Palmer and Sean O'Sullivan. But this team has surprised us before....

Palmer needs to shape up
He has had several starts where his pitching hasn’t been sharp but the offense has kept him in a position to win—it isn’t common for a pitcher to give up 10 hits in 5 IP and still walk away with the win. Had the D’backs not committed such little league defensive errors, the Angels could have easily lost that game. Same goes for Aybar’s inside-the-park bunt “home run”, but that was the game before.
Palmer has been a happy story thus far this season, but the magic may be wearing off. He needs to focus, spot his ball better and not expect the offense to score him a dozen runs so that he can give up 11.

How can
Palmer’s magic be wearing off? He is 7-1 and still getting the wins. Just expect the Angels to score more runs when he pitches. When Lackey pitches expect hardly any runs to be scored. So far that’s how it goes, so it isn’t broke so don’t worry about it. I think Palmer is filling in more than admirably with 7 victories in 8 decisions. Don’t you like watching games like yesterday where the Angels score a ton of runs and there is a lot of action?

Hahahaha!
That game yesterday tried my patience, entertained me, worked my last nerve, had me laughing hysterically and drove me to despair. It was never boring, though.

He is getting run support, probably because he is paired up against the opponent's worst starter.

I read in the OCR today that he has gotten 59 runs of support in 7 games. That’s 8+ runs per game.
I love this team.

That's not true at all. Palmer has faced the opposing team's ace on more than one occasion.
May 2 – Palmer vs. C C Sabathia (NYY). Angels won 8-2. Palmer allowed one run in 6.1 innings pitched.
May 30 – Palmer vs. Felix Henandez (SEA). Angels win 4-3. Palmer pitched seven scoreless innings. No huge run support.
June 17 – Palmer vs. Tim Lincecum (SF). Angels win 4-3. Palmer allowed one run in 6.1 innings pitched. No huge run support in that game either.

You're right. I did not now the actuality, so I was making a suggestion. Hence "probably".
In fact, his opposing pitcher has been a lot more difficult than even you suggest:
1. KC Gil Meche #1
2. BO Wakefield #3
3. SE F. Hernandez #1
4. LAD Billingsley #1
5. CWS (relief appearance)
6. SE F. Hernandez #1
7. SD Gaudin #4
8. SF Lincecum #1
9. CO A. Cook #1
10. AZ Scherzer #4
That is six times matched up against the oppositions #1, once against their #3, and twice against their #4. Yeegads the dude is living large.
We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.

Gil Meche over Grienke as #1?
Or were you going purely by rotation order?

I agree that your chances of getting significant run support are greater when any of the
Angels starters are paired up against the opponet’s worst starter, but that is not always the case.

not to be a stick in the mud
but he’s just not that good. He had a few very good games (his CG against Boston tops the list for me) but no one here can deny that he’s been pretty lucky to get most of those 7 wins. I’m thankful he showed up and pitched well for us when we needed him the most, but I think it would be foolish to count on him the rest of the year to be anything but a spot starter.

Just curious
What tune do you whistle when you go past the graveyard?
When a pitcher is given the sort of lead handed to Palmer yesterday, he is told by the manager not to nibble but to go after the other hitters and let them put the ball in play. Either Palmer was ineffectively wild (and unable to locate his pitches) or he was trying to finesse and failing miserably. From the TV vantage I had (the D’backs TV coverage) I couldn’t tell. I could tell he was making far too many pitches and getting into too many 1-0 and 2-0 counts.
Either way, he opened the door and welcomed Arizona back into what should have been a laugher.
Viewed differently, if the Diamondbacks hadn’t been so inept in the field, the Angels would have scored about half as many runs and would have lost the game. The D’backs got back into the game, not upon defensive lapses by the Angels, but by taking BP during game time, first from Palmer and then from Jepsen.
Pointing to a W-L record and declaring everything to be OK is to completely ignore what is before your eyes.
by George Kaplan on Jun 29, 2009 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
What is the bottom line?
They win when he pitches, isn’t that what they try and do every game? So I am not ignoring the bottom line. I am not saying I want this guy on the mound in game 7 of the World Series but as a 5th starter he is doing just fine. 7-1, how do you argue with that? The bottom line the Angels score a lot of runs when he pitches and they win. What more are you looking for from a pitcher? Is it better he pitches 7 innings gives up 2 runs and they Angels lose?
by AngelKeith on Jun 29, 2009 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, but
Pitching 7 innings and giving only 2 runs makes it more likely the Angels will win. The offense, especially this offense, is a fickle thing, and it’s happenstance that it’s been good when Palmer’s on the mound. Correlation does not equal causation. Again, that Palmer got the win yesterday is more a function of the Diamondbacks not knowing basic defense for an inning that it is that he can pitch or that the Angels’ offense is good. It is highly doubtful the match-up of Palmer and offense continues much longer.
Then again, there is Matt Cain for several years for the opposite example…

Another example
Then again, there is Matt Cain for several years for the opposite example…
Or Kelvim Escobar of 2006—he pitched wonderfully, but couldn’t buy a run for his own team. He finished the season 11-14, but for better run support he’d have easily won 17 or 18 games.

Yeah, I seem to remember
That he had the lowest ERA that year for a pitcher with a losing record.

He had a 3.61 ERA and an 11-14 record.
He should have had about a 16-9 record, but the offense just didn’t turn out for him. If I was him, I’d have gotten some kind of persecution complex.

I think it might have been more
He had several NDs in which he pitched 7 or so and gave up 1-3 runs in those outings, but came away with a no decision and the team lost by a run, apparently in the later innings.
He could easily have had back-to-back 18 win seasons in 2006 and 2007.

Yep, it's much better
What more are you looking for from a pitcher? Is it better he pitches 7 innings gives up 2 runs and they Angels lose?
Which pitcher has the higher probability of winning?
The one who goes 7 IP and gives up 2 ER?
*The one who goes 5 IP and gives up 6 ER?
Don’t answer too quickly—take your time. Think about it. Do you seriously think either of those scenarios can cause the team to win?
Of course not. But only one can give the team the best opportunity to win.

Player B

K/9: 5.43
K/BB: 1.38

Player A is Jon Garland’s numbers for the Angels in 2008
Player B is Matt Palmer this year.
Matt so far is doing a fine job as a #5 starter, but it cannot be expected that he will continue to win at his current pace.
The Angels need to add a premium starter to the rotation (not to mention the bullpen, too). They may not be able to win the AL West with this pitching staff.

The best stat isn't even posted.
Palmer pitches 3 times as fast as Garland with men on base. I’d choose him over Garland based on that factor alone.
I don’t know how our defenders stayed awake with Garland on the mound with runner on base. Friggin annoying and frustrating…
by sothball on Jun 29, 2009 1:48 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Will take Palmer over Garland any day
But Garland had to be slow to be successful. Thankfully, he still had some juice in the tank when he was with us. My point is, his slowness is directly related to holding runners on base. Check out how many sb’s he’s given up (I will save you the trouble, very few is an understatement).
Of course, he was let go at the right time. Doesn’t matter how many stolen bases you give up when you reach the point you lose your stuff. He seems to have lost it this year, anyway.

The Missus and I attended a game last year...
…where Garland allowed runners in 4 of the first 5 innings. At least 3 of those innings included walks.
IIRC, it took about 2 1/2 hours to get through 5 innings. He was finally relieved after the 5th inning. The Missus and I had decided that if he came out for the 6th inning, we were going to leave (and we rarely leave early). We were both annoyed as hell. It was too frustrating.

…I will take a World Series championship over an ESPN lovefest.
I really don’t give a damn about what their reporters, editors, or associated has-beens/never-weres think say or dream.
The best possible outcome to me would be for the Angels to fly under the radar all the way to a World Series title. Let’s the ESPN crowd wonder how the hell this happened, then let them start their screwed-up and erroneous prediction cycle all over again.

In 2002 the announcers and analysts were so awful during the games
that for some games we turned off the sound and listened to the radio. At that time there was not a delay between the two broadcasts so it worked. It doesn’t work that way now, but it’s almost fun to hear about what you’re going to see a second or two before it happens.

Our bullpen and starters have struggled at various times this season. Our bats, on the other hand, have steadily improved.
As long as we have Mickey Hatcher, we are ok.
