Teix & GA vs Kendry & Rivera
we're almost to the halfway point of the season and it looks like we're hitting out stride. taking this opportunity to examine and compare what we lost over the off-season and what we replaced it with. i want to focus on 1b and lf, big tex and ga.
what we lost: tex .276 20hr 60 rbi (20.0 mill) ga .284 4 hr 27 rbi (2.5 mill) total: .280 24 hr 87 rbi
what we have: kmo .280 13hr 41 rbi (600k) rivers .307 13 hr 43 rbi (3.25 mill) total: .293 26 hr 84 rbi
granted ga was injured which i think further validates letting him walk (durability issues) and tex is the beneficiary of hitting in a wind tunnel for half his games. also consider the salary implications, tex and ga 22.5 mill compared to kendry, rivera, abreu & fuentes 17.35 mill.

Wow.
Compared to CA1IFORNIA ANGELS, you need shift keys. All in all, your facts are true.
RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09
do you realize your name is in...

Do you realize that his real name is e.e. cummings?

I'd prefer to compare with Casey
I think of him as the one we lost. We never had Teix, we rented him. He was always going to be a Yankee. If Ninja had offered him 8 years and $100,000,000 the Yankees would have offered 8 years, $100,000,001. Not saying he’s a bad guy, but pinstripes were always his destiny.
Kotch: .269, 2 HR, 28 rbi (no idea what he makes)

I was actually comparing
all three last night – Tex, Kotch, and Kendry (funny this posit came up cause I was just researching). IMO Kendry stacks up favorably in the group.
Player G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO OBP SLG AVG
1. M Teixeira 71 275 50 76 22 0 20 60 158 44 47 .387 .575 .276
2. K Morales 70 257 34 72 22 2 13 41 137 22 53 .333 .533 .280
3. C Kotchman 63 219 17 59 18 0 2 28 83 17 23 .326 . 379 .269
*I hope that comes out ok format wise…
KMo doesnt have the HR totals or walks that Tex does – but Tex is an established star in the game where this is Kendry first real chance at starting so my hope is that he increases walk total with more patience and pitch recognition as his career progresses. I don’t know how ballpark or league differential play in with Kotch’s numbers, but on the surface (albiet very early in the race) it looks like trading Kotch vs KMo was the right call.

Funny
I was putting the stats into OO Calc to do a post but had to leave for work. Guess we’ve all been thinking about this comparison.
Nick, you will always be an Angel. And you will be missed.

It's absolutely incredible
that so many of you guys were doing exactly the same thing I was doing in the middle of the night.
This is where I began with my own comparisons. It expanded from there.
I too just compared the three 1st baggers
on Sunday night! No joke. Anyway, I’m really stoked on Morales. Think of the future that guy could have. Props to Reagins and Sosh on a smart move.
Keep those hammies limber, boys.

True that
All we need is a post about Teixeira, GA, Kendry and the goat-footed balloon man.

I didn't remember that we got Rivera and Izzy in trade for Guillen.
That was a great trade.
.... as sexy as socks on a rooster.
Gotta love Canada for SOME reason.
I love this team.

I'm actually quite surprised
With Kendry Morales. He’s looking pretty good. It seems like all he does is hit extra base hits.
here's something fun
over half of Morales’ hits have been for extra bases!
overall, he has 72 hits so far this year. 13 of those were HRs, 22 were 2Bs, and 2 were 3Bs.
that’s impressive
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

I agree
That this was the best thing (letting Kotch go) because We were just renting Tex as was stated above.
Salary between Kotchman and Morales is very similar, but from all accounts Kotch was kind of a Red ass in the clubhouse, the other players liked him but the coaches didn’t. Kendry has really gelled with this team and is a better fit, I love switch hitters and that advantage plus the durability issues with Kotch were reason enough. Kendry will hit more for more power and be more durable than Kotch.
Now if only we can jettison Aybar and Mathews (eating some salary of course) for a decent pitcher we’d be great
Quit Bitching about Wood not playing, The guy does deserve his shot but quit pretending that we have Willie Mays sitting n the pine
by Sinatrasratpack on Jun 30, 2009 10:42 AM PDT reply actions
What was the exact problem with Krotch?
Can you elaborate beyong what you just said?
Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?
it was
a poorly kept secret that Kotch and Scioscia weren’t ‘seeing eye to eye’. From Clubhouse friends I have he was pretty open on his feelings that he was an elite 1bman that should never sit, and sometimes Soth would put his pool boy crush Q to play against lefties. This and Kotch’s batting lineup spot were a point of some contetntion. The other players liked him Figgy especially, they always hung out, but the coaching staff seemed to think that the Morales long term option was better.
And they were right.
We love to bark and show our teeth to management when they are boneheaded and don’t make a particular move that we all want (i.e Wood, Aybar, Mathews Kendrick etc…) but we also then need to give them credit for taking a leap of faith and it being the right choice. Which this was

Kotch has a higher BA against lefties than Morales. Maybe he was on to something...
We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.
Kotch should have never had to sit against lefties in favor of Q. Sosh was wrong on that.
As for Kotch vs Kendry, Kendry making a pretty good case for himself this year.
i'm glad you mentioned that welch because...
the new elias ranking came out and only abreu is considered a type a free agent while lackey, figgy, vlad and oliver are type b. i know that the rankings will be updated after the season but our upcoming free agents elias rankings could alter who we sign and let walk.
figgy and lackey
will definitely be Type A by the end of the season if they continue their current performance.
Rest in Peace Adenhart

FYI
you can’t just take the two batting averages of the pairs of players and average them together because they don’t all have an equal amount of ABs, especially GA. So his average would have a much lesser effect on the “Tex/GA” total so the combined average would probably be closer to .276 than .284….maybe .278 if I had to guess. You would need to do a weighted average.
But I get the larger picture of the post so I’ll stop nit picking. The Juan Rivera signing looks better and better each day and I think K-Mo has surprised us all with his production. His OPS is closer to .900 than it is to .800 and I don’t think a lot of people even expected him to produce even an .800 OPS. He’s made me forget about Casey Kotchman.

Fangraphs makes life easier
Compare the value of major-league first basemen. In dollars, Teixeira has accumulated $10.8 million worth of production (not park adjusted), while Kendry has $6.1 million and Casey $0.7 million. Their salaries are on Cot’s: $20 million for Teixeira, $0.6 million for Kendry (although he got $3 million when he signed), and $2.9 million for Kotchman. Prorated for about 75 games, Teixeira has been paid $9.2 million, Kendry $500,000 (I included a sixth of his signing bonus since he signed a six-year deal), and Kotchman $1.3 million. So the value each player has added to his team minus his salary is $1.6 million for Teixeira, $5.6 million for Kendry, and -$0.6 million for Kotchman. Morales wins this battle by a lot. You could even argue that, all things being equal, the Teixeira trade earned the Angels about $6 million so far this season, since they are playing Morales at first now instead of Kotchman.
