Going to see the Salt Lake Bees on Monday, July 6

Any recommendations for some things to do and see while we are in Salt Lake for the day?  I'm traveling with two cousins who think that seeing the first JC Penney's is the height of something or other, so I was pleasantly surprised that they were enthusiastic about seeing a baseball game.

Star-divide

Their dad was my dad's older brother, and they're in their 60s.  My husband is clinging to every vacation day from now until he retires in December, so he isn't coming on this trip. I think he might be a little relieved not to spend that much time with a whole bunch of women our age; one of me is enough.   I'll be the first to admit that I'm a little odd (Totally Anal About Spelling), but they are odd on the order of the Lake Elsinore baseball game pre-game show with the hearse parade that Sothball mentioned on another thread.

Huh.  I made it sound like they're not much fun, but they are lots of fun.

We have loose plans to visit Beehive House that morning and dinner at Lion House unless I can now talk them into hot dogs at the ballpark.  We've all been to Tabernacle Square and we don't feel the need to do that again.

Thanks.

Uh. Could you go to the Temple and do some geneology research for Mrs. Stirrups??

Just one or two days’ worth…

We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.

If you need something looked up I’ve got Genealogy.com and I have no problem sharing my mad skeels with friends.

Go hunt down Ashley Thompson.

I am sure she would be fun to meet and know what to do in SLC by now. Interview her and take pictures, post it on Halos Heaven which would earn you your first recommended fanpost.

She's in Nashville, according to Wikipedia

but what do they know?

Oh. That Ashley Thompson.

I’ll see what I can do; it never hurts to ask.

I’m off to ask her, but she might be here right now because he pitched last night.

I just sent her what I hope is

a charming email, and not something that sounds like a stalker would send.

My youngest daughter had problems with a stalker at work, at Disneyland, when she was 20. She was a face and head character and one of the Goofy’s that she thought of as a friend started writing her really creepy letters. Turns out he had been fired by Knott’s for the same thing, but with an underage girl. Ick!

Ah, SLC -- my old stompin' grounds

I always recommend heading up to the hills. There are a few fun places that are a short drive away from downtown SLC to go for a bite to eat and enjoy the mountains.

Ruth’s Diner is about a 10 min. drive up Emigration Canyon from the downtown area and has a great patio. Good diner-type food for breakfast/lunch/dinner and great atmosphere.

On the way to Ruth’s is the “This is the Place” monument, where Brigham Young made the proclamation to settle in the Salt Lake valley. May be of interest, if only for the nice view over the valley. As a Californian, you may want to stop and offer your gratitude that Mr. Young decided to stop in Utah instead of proceeding all the way westward to California.

There’s also the Silver Fork Lodge up Big Cottonwood Canyon (about 20 min. from downtown). Again, good place to have lunch in the mountains. Typically, a hopping joint during ski season, it’s nice and relaxing in the summers.

If your cousins are in awe of the first JC Penney, then they’d surely love to bear witness to the world’s first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in Salt Lake City.

Most of all, hope you make it to the game. Cheers!

Ruth's Diner is now on the list!

Thanks for that.

I don’t like to think about what California would be like now if he hadn’t stopped where he did, all them little redheaded kids runnin’ ‘round everywheres. My cousins and I have slightly more distant cousins who are Mormons (and whom we love anyways) but they don’t live near our route and our time is a bit limited. We are heading to the Tetons after we leave SLC., but stopping at the This is the Place monument sounds good to me. Will add that to “things to do”.

I don’t know if a “first in the state” franchise stands up to a “first in the world, evah” franchise, but I’ll ask.

Just printed the tickets and stuck them in the suitcase. Good seats, right behind home plate. I’m still giddy that they agreed to go to the game with me. They think of me and my sister as their “little” cousins because we’re a couple of years younger, but they do not know the evil that lurks within my black little heart. They grew up in Denver and I think they’re both Rockies fans. They will probably disown me ten minutes into the game. Bwahahahaha.

I’m takin’ my camera.

Head for the hills

Go hit Park City. It’s only about a 30 minute drive from SLC.

by furiousbs on Jun 30, 2009 3:15 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Park City sounds like a good side trip. I'll see if that fits.

Do you go for the scenery, the shopping, the food, or all of the above?

Park City - all of the above

There are a couple Olympic sites to check out, and an outlet mall. There’s some good food on Main Street, but I was a poor college student, then poor journalist when I lived in SLC so I don’t know too much about that scene. Have fun! The area is SO beautiful this time of year.

Utah recently overturned their draconian private club/liquor law.

Hit up the Crown Burger in SLC; it belongs on the Mt. Rushmore of burger establishments, right up there with In n Out.

Yes, yes I would do that

just for you. I know I’ve still got my tap shoes… somewhere.

I remember how to do a time step, a double time step, a double triple, and a travelling time step. If all else fails I can fill in with flap-ball-change, and finish by shuffling off to Buffalo. Not so sure about doing a riff time step.

I just don’t think I can still fit into my costumes and I’m a bit rusty, so I hope you’re not disappointed.

Oh, lest I forget .. some of the best microbreweries are in SLC and Park City

Squatters and Red Rock in downtown SLC and Wasatch Brew Pub in Park City. Strange, but true.

I am working in SLC for an internship right now and going to the Bees game Saturday

Check out Park City – it’s really cool this time of the year up in the mountains – I have a couple of friends that are living there. You could also check out Squatters, Red Rock Brewery, Iggy’s Sports Grill.

Also do a search for some hiking trails – really popular here in Salt Lake.

Hmmm. A bunch of nearly-old ladies going into breweries. In Utah.

We will probably visit one, but somebody has to drive and it’s usually me. Thanks for the comments about Park City. If we have time we will head there.

On the way to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon

after we visited Bryce, we stopped in Kanab for gasoline. I asked the attendant* how to pronouce the name of the town, and after he told me I said, “I guess you can tell who’s not from here from how they pronounce the name.” His response was, “Oh, WE know exactly who belongs here and who doesn’t”. Kanab is not far from Hildale and Colorado City, so maybe that made them a bit distrustful of outsiders.

When mr opiejeanne came back from the restroom I told him to drive. Drive anywhere but just drive.

There’s a valley along that route that looked really nice, little farms and lots of green open space, but when we stopped at a wide spot to eat lunch several of the locals showed up and parked near our camper. They just sat in their cars and waited for us to leave.

*26 years ago they still pumped your gas, at least in Utah.

I have been waiting for an answer from Ashley Thompson

and so far have heard nothing. She’s probably traveling with her husband so you guys have a better chance of running into her here than I have in Salt Lake. I’ll keep checking my email while I’m on the road, though, in case she does check in.

I don't leave until Sunday morning.

Mr opiejeanne and I will be at the game tomorrow, in some pretty sweet seats in the Diamond Club. I won a pretty large cash award in a student art show last month, and I decided to use it for that.
