Angels interested in Dan Haren

Ken Rosenthal at FOX Sports says that the Angels inquired on Dan Haren, hoping to add the elite starter through a deal that could have included "their surplus of catchers and middle infielders to put together a blockbuster offer." However, the Diamondbacks declined to engage in more serious talks for Haren. Says one D'Backs exec:

"I almost can't conceive of a package that would motivate us to move him."

Rosenthal goes on to say that the Diamondbacks consider Haren an integral piece of their future, but one source indicated that "talks could accelerate" if the Angels bowl over the Diamondbacks with an overwhelming offer. Rosenthal notes this is a sign that teams are trying to get creative in a depleted market for starting pitching.

what would it take Wood, S-Rod, Conger to start it?

Maybe

Mathis, Aybar/Kendrick, and GMJ will get it done.

Haren would be cool and all...

But our rotation is fine. It’s the pen that needs help. But then it’s been looking better. Plus I don’t think Haren is worth those guys.

But as a arizona native.

I watch dan Haren… We want dan haren you have to understand what he does. He goes out and pitches 7-8 innings to CG almost everytime. He is 7-5 with a ERA under 2.25. He could easily be 13-2 He has gotten screwed out of so many wins. He should be the Cy Young this year. I tell you Tony Reagins. This is better then any A-rod, Tex, Johan Santana, Jake Peavy deal. Dan haren will be the number 1 starter. If we would have faced Dan Haren we would have to really work for a win.

Nick Adenhart.

Where is your fanshot? I looked for it...

Getting Haren may be the nail in the coffin in terms of saying adios to Big John Lackey. Haren is a good, but not great pitcher, and honestly, I don’t trust many of the pitchers who come out of Oakland in recent years. They must burn them out or something…

I could see the Angels packaging maybe Sean Rodriguez and an arm or two. At any rate, with any trade, I’d hate to see Conger, Wood, Reckling, Walden, or Chaffee go.

Look at the deal which took Haren to the D'backs...
The Diamondbacks paid a steep initial price for Haren, acquiring him from the A’s along with pitcher Connor Robertson for six players on Dec. 14, 2007. The A’s received pitchers Brett Anderson, Dana Eveland and Greg Smith, plus outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Aaron Cunningham and first baseman Chris Carter.

That sets the baseline for what the D’backs would consider a fair return for trading Haren to the Angels. Players who are ready to be on the 25-man roster in 2010, or 2011 at the latest.

Reckling/Walden, plus O’Sullivan? You bet.
Napoli or Conger? Yep.
Kendrick or Rodriguez? Of course.
Wood? That is probably what would make it “overwhelming”.

The whole “mentor to the young pitchers” is a fine idea, but Arizona can sign Washburn as a free agent if it wants a veteran to mentor the kids. Haren is going to cost some team its crown jewels (as MigCab did when the Tigers acquired him). We wouldn’t be making this trade with has-beens and never-will-bes. This is a deal which will make us all say “ouch” if it is ever made.

Actually, Washburn is a better fit for US

If we need a mentor for young pitchers.

I would not want to send prospects to the Mariners. I also think getting an ace is better than getting a mediocre lefty

I think the reference was to Washburn

…as a free agent. His deal expires this season. I don’t think anyone would advocate trading for him currently.

Turns out that the reason for the cancellation

was the last minute re-write of the script. Which one is it that you guys are sharing? The one that was greenlit or the one submitted at the last second which triggered the cancellation?

Slim pickings, especially for good set up guys

But Dannys Baez (never been a big fan), Rafael Betancourt (if he heals from injury), and Cla Meredith (ugly WHIP) might be possibilities. Huston Street ain’t going anywhere unless the Rocks tank in July, but even though Street is as classy as any other ballplayer I’ve met (seriously, a fantastic person), we don’t need a rental closer to play set up for two plus months. .

by JoseGuillenSux on Jul 1, 2009 12:24 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

I don’t know how Aybar can still be blocking Wood at this point. Either the Soth is loyal to a fault or Wood is just not as a ready as we all think they are.

I know Wood has issues with he’s out of “options” and when they bring him up, he’ll have to stay up. But I think it might be too late to get use out of him when we expand our roster.

But back to the topic, if Dan Haren were to be traded to the Angels, then I’m almost positive Lackey is gone next year.

It's an option year.

And this is Brandon’s last option year.
We can bring him up/send him down as many times as we want this year, but he’s entitled to be with the big league club next season.

Aybar has actually played well lately

so his trade value is probably pretty high right now. There is always a team out there looking for a good defensive shortstop that isn’t completely inept offensively.

Idk how you can say hes not a great pitcher.

He was 3rd in Era last year and 1st this year. He Will beat any pitcher in the American League. What the Dbacks want for him will Be a SOS but they are not going to want napoli. They are going for the number 1 pick next year and are trying the get Bryce Harper. Getting Dan Haren will put us over the edge of Boston and whoever else challenges us.

Nick Adenhart.

If the Diamond Backs are in rebuilding mode...

Wouldn’t it be a good idea to trade them some expire contracts? Figgins, Abreu, Lackey, or Guerrero?

I’m not for trading any of those guys. But I would have to believe any deal involving Haren will have to include our top prospects.

I don’t think they would have a need for a Short Stop. Wood could be safe, but maybe a clutch hitter like Maicer Izturis would be packaged up. Maybe a lead off guy, Willits maybe can play left for them. A pitcher either O’Sullivan or Palmer. And maybe 2 more prospects like Conger or someone who will impact them by next year..

RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09

by Jay Cal on Jul 1, 2009 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This isn't the NBA

Trading for expiring contracts has value only in the draft picks the team gets IF it offers arbitration to the player and he refuses. Otherwise, there is zero value in picking up expiring deals.

The Gold Standard for a trade like this remains the haul Jon Daniels got for the Rangers when he traded Texieira to the Braves. You can bet the D’backs will be expecting a similar payday if they decide to trade Haren. Nothing less even makes sense to Arizona.

by George Kaplan on Jul 1, 2009 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's kind of what I was getting at.

I was just trying to be funny calling them expiring contracts. A guy like Figgins will be a Type A Free Agent. I think as Lackey keeps playing well, he too will be a Type A. Guerrero’s power numbers are down and has been playing hurt, with little to no fielding time. That could change his Free Agent Status to Type B.

Although I freely admit that I’m not really sure how these things are determined and essentially I’m just regurgitating what I’ve heard in the past.

But as far as the Gold Standard statement, in this economy can the Diamondbacks really expect to receive the same kind of haul. I assumed that moving Haren has something to do with reducing payroll as well.

They want wood.

They want him at 3rd base so they can move Mark(Strikeout King and Error King) to Second base because all of his errors are on Throwing.

Well,

Maybe our definitions are differing. I put pitchers like Halladay, Johan Santana, Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddux, and Roger Clemens (juiced or not) in the great category. Haren is very very good, and looking at his stats, he could be on cusp of greatness. Then again, even though he earned his ML chops in Oakland, he has been in the NL the past two years, where offenses are not as powerful as in the AL. I would love to see the Angels acquire him, but only if the price is right.

Well Just think this

Dan Haren is the Number 1 this year because of the injury to Brandon Webb. He could be in that great cat. if he was always a number one. Plus he beat Johan 3 times last year!

by WillGoAngels27 on Jul 1, 2009 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dbacks needs offense!

The Dbacks need a hitting First Baseman and a Center Fielder! Chris Young is batting a whole .197 and Chad Tracy isn’t much better at .203 PLUS they’ll need some starting pitching if they give us Haren. Steve Gilbert of MLB.com was quoted on mlbtraderumors ‘that Byrnes … expects to move pitchers Doug Davis & Jon Garland as well as … Felipe Lopez (2nd) … veterans in the final year of their contracts.’

Offer a package of K. Mo & GMJ (we pay 1/2 his salary), plus Izturis, Palmer & O’Sullivan.
We move Figgy to 2nd and bring up Wood to play 3rd.
Then we make a deal with Buddy Black for Gonzo!

by AngryFan on Jul 1, 2009 1:26 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Gonzo

aka Adrian Gonzales. Which won’t happen. And we’d be stuck with Quinlan @ 1B. Or a promotion of Matt Brown. But I don’t anticipate that. Hey maybe we could make a trade to Atlanta for Casey Kotchman

Please not sarcasm.

Are you serious about that deal of players?

thats junk for Haren. did you see the players the Dbacks gave up to get him? its not like he’s regressed, its going to take something similar to get him.

by HALO_86 on Jul 7, 2009 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Back on topic

Here is a guy who is counseling the Diamondbacks to trade Haren, and his argument is a sound one—The team is going nowhere fast, and needs to reload on players.

What is interesting is that he didn’t put the Angels on the list of teams with deep MLB-ready talent, and that might be right. For example, he lists Bucholz and Masterson from the Red Sox, but aside from O’Sullivan (who has impressed me, at least, considering he was starting for Rancho Cucamonga last season), the best of the Angels’ next-gen of pitchers is at the AA level (Walden and Reckling) or lower, while guys like Ortega and Bell are at AAA only because of the upward draft caused by injury at the majors level.

If Arredondo was more consistent he might be a lure, but his 1:1 K:BB ratio at SLC is alarming. While we have position players who could make the jump, it may well be that we don’t have attractive enough AAA-level pitchers to make this deal happen.
