Many Teams in Need of a Shortstop
Ken Rosenthal reports many teams like the Red Sox, Mets, Cardinals, and Royals are in need of a shortstop. He says the Angels could look to trade Erick Aybar for a bat or a reliever and bring up Wood to cover SS strengthening the team in two positions. Rosenthal also mentions the Angels being in the unique position to acquire Jake Peavy as the Padres would not like to see Peavy end up in the Dodger organization. This would depend on Lackey (almost certainly) walking away in free agency at the end of the season.

Aybar
Pull the trigger and send Aybar away…. It’s Brandon Woods time and we need serious bullpen help.
Dont know about the Peavy option.
Injury prone and NL adjusted

Peavy! Peavy! Peavy!
Angel Pitching (Adenhart), Angel Defense - get past that.

Both
Please make both deals. Include Kendrick in the Peavy pkg. Although I’m sure Sosh is reluctant to use SRod after those 3 failed sac bunts last Sept.

So quick
to throw the baby out with the bathwater? Howie is slumping. We all know that. Maybe he’ll never reach the levels we all thought he would before this year. But I’ll bet you a dollar he still has a better career than Aybar, and I have no doubts that will be clear by the end of this year.

that may be true....
You do have a point. However, replacing Howie AND Aybar together might be easier than we think.
Lets say we trade Howie and do what I say (move Figgy to 2nd, Wood to third.) Now lets say Aybar turns out to be a medicore crap-oid. Well, you can always get rid of him and put Wood and short, move Figgy back to third and put S-Rod at 2nd. Also, who knows, maybe Izzy will still be around.
Now, were looking at the year 2011. And Figgy will be no longer in lead-off form or quickly deteriorating from such form. In which, yes, would leave a hole to fill Figgy’s spot. However, the smart way to remedy this would be to get a potential leadoff hitter for whoever you trade Aybar or Howie for. And furthermore, it probably isn’t all that radical to assume that some of our prospects like Freddy Sandoval, Chris Petit, Peter Boujos or Matt Brown might be MLB ready.
Finally, I’d like to see the possibilities of of grooming S-Rod into a leadoff hitter. He seems like he could be a second-rate Ricky Henderson type lead-off. Meaning: has power, has speed, but isnt going to swipe 40 bags a season.
My case against Howie refers to his seemingly mediocre defense and inability to walk. However, I think losing Howie and Aybar wouldnt be the end of the world. I would just chose to get rid of Howie first.

Defense is undervalued
Why is everyone so quick to trade Aybar. The guy has great range and will grow into an outstanding defensive shortstop. The days of teams being built around power and waiting for a dinger are over. Baseball is going back to the 80’s… defense, stolen bases, situational hitting… I love it!
Bring back the Cardinal-style teams of the 80’s!

Not a bad idea, except...
1) We don’t play on ‘turf like the 80’s Cards did.
2) We don’t have the same overall team speed as they had.
3) After watching our Hatcher-coached hitters with speed for years now, hitting down on the ball does not appear part of what they are taught. Figgy is probably he best example. In my view, he hits too many pop-ups and line drives, and not enough down into the turf.

Aybar vs Wood... Wood wins on almost every level
Brandon Wood not only is an impact player at the bat, he is also considered a superior defensive player. Defense isnt being discounted Wood is a stud in the field and at the plate.
Aybar is given way too much credit as a situational hitter unless by situational you mean that Aybars worst at bats are in the most critical situations.
Wood not only has game changing power, he is a big RBI guy, is showing plate discipline and becoming a big on base percentage guy. He also has stinging gap power. Bring up wood and lock down Figgins to a long term deal… win win. Aybar just doesnt have a role to play on this team and is holding them back.
Its June… time to put our best team on the field and give up on the illusion that Aybar is a part of that.

Time for Aybar to go
Aybar is a nicely skilled player. True he is the last one you want at the plate in a big game or key at bat, but he certainly has the physical skills.
The main reasons Aybar needs to go is that he is taking the playing time from the superiorly skilled infielders wallowing down in the minors. The Angels are a better, deeper, stronger club with Brandon Wood at Short. Please dont forget about Sean Rodriguez and Matt Brown who figure to impact the Angels in the present or future.
If Kendrick has any options left, perhaps Sean Rodriguez takes over 2nd while Kendrick figures out what went so wrong with his swing and plate discipline.
If the Angels get some bullpen help in the trade, great… but even a draft pick for Aybar makes the Angels better now and in the future.
