Perfect Trades
So although none of this will happen, well maybe some of it, as far as names goes. I was just watching Ken Rosenthal on fox videos. He said that our Angels are open to trade Erick Aybar (boy I sure hope it is soon), to open up space for Brandon Wood. He later said that our Angels are in a good position to trade for Jake Peavy.
As I watched this I was thinking to myself, "How in the world could we pull that off?" I personally feel that we could "get rid" of some guys that we don’t plan on keeping around. Now don’t get me wrong I am not calling to get rid of these guys, as they have been with us for a long time. But what have you done for me lately. There are only a few guys that were around for the ’02 season. However I don’t feel that Big John will be around next year. This is ok with me, so I was thinking; why not trade him for Jake Peavy. I don’t think there would honestly be a single Angels fan who would not want that. Obviously we would have to give them more, but that would open up a spot on the rotation. As far as Aybar goes the Pads can have him too. I don’t care where he goes but I am sure we will get a pitcher for the pen. So here is how my perfect trade would go.
Big John, a young arm from the farm system and a young catcher, for Peavy.
Aybar to the Cards, (why not the NL Angels of the East), for young arm out of the pen…. maybe Kyle McClellan.
Now in my opinion these trades would be ideal, and probably not happen. But what the heck why not? I think they make sense. The Pads could get young players and someone that can help them win now. Not that they seem to be trying to but we can pay that salary, we win, and we are close to Peavy’s home. I am curious to see what you all think.

Lackey worth 2 draft picks
They are going nowhere this year and know it. The Angels will at least get 2 draft picks for Lackey if he is a free agent, so perhaps they trade him to a contending NL club for two top prospects and flip those prospects, Sean O’Sullivan and Aybar to the Pads for Lackey.

I didn't even think of that.
Good point made, I think you were meaning Sullivan and Aybar for Peavy?
I didn’t even think about draft picks for Lackey but if you don’t plan on signing him for next year then you should get someone now, so when the playoffs roll around, you have some good chemistry.

Why
would they want to pay Lackey to pitch for the Padres for the pleasure of replacing him with Peavy? They’re basically the same pitcher, only Lackey can be a free agent and Peavy has a no-trade. And I’m sure the Pads aren’t that interested in Lackey unless they intend to flip him.
I like the trade Aybar ideas, though. We won’t miss him. Brandon Wood could suck out loud and we still have two other guys who are just as good as Aybar to back him up.

If the Padres can't afford to resign Peavy it makes no sense for them to trade
for a few months of Lackey who would be even more expensive to sign. Peavy can even bat, where lackey has had little of that except for a few games of inner league play. Lackey plus two prospects sounds like the Angels are getting the short end of the stick on that one.

They don't need to resign Peavy
He is signed through 2012 with a club option in 2013, making 15, 16 and 17 million in 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively.

Like I said before
The Pads need a ss bad.
They may want Brandon Wood, though. How ’bout Wood in a package?

No way. No trading Wood.
He’s the only potential home grown power bat that’s pretty much ready. I don’t know about you but I’m getting tired of slap hitting singles hitters. I want to see homeruns. I want to see power from the corners. And right now Brandon Wood at least looks like that guy.

Maybe. Maybe not. Power from the corners? Not at the expense of Figgy’s awesomeness. SS? Maybe.
Peavy? Yeah, he ain’t proven. Hell, he’s goin’ on 30. Look at his numbers, Wood blows him away.
On the other hand, I like Wood. I couldn’t think of anything that would make me happier than “he” becoming the next great Angel. But he’s a maybe. Let’s not get carried away yet.

Not involving us, but...
How about the Tigers acquiring Edwin Jackson last winter for Matt Joyce? What a sweet deal for them, eh?
Back to the Halos, I still think trading Aybar is the way to go, and hopefully we can get some relief pitching in return.
In Remembrance of Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, Henry Pearson. Heal soon Jon Wilhite.
I want Andrew Thomas Gallo to be a pinata, and the Angels supply the bats...

Watching Jackson pitch
It was hard to believe the Dodgers gave this guy up for Mark Hendrickson.

I agree to a point...
…but even Tampa Bay gave up on him. I believe he has been a bit too erratic. Perhaps he has found some consistency now. If so, it was a good trade for the Tigers.

Lackey for top prospects isn't a bad idea in a trade

Perfect trade
Would be Wood for Peavy…the Angels get an ace to replace Lackey when he leaves, Wood gets his shot to play in the Major Leagues.
I can imagine the outrage if that ever happened, but I’d rather have Peavy than an minor league slugger who has really yet to prove himself in the Major Leagues, no matter how his MLB performance is qualified to make him look better than he really is.
Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?

I'm off Peavy
The kid isn’t the same pitcher who won the Cy a couple of seasons ago. I was hoping last year was an aberration, when he dissolved in the second half and pitched very poorly away from Petco. I even boosted the idea of trading for him on this very site a month or so ago.
Unfortunately, this season isn’t much better. He had a good string of outings in the second half of May (when the Padres were on fire), but his most recent start he didn’t make it to the second inning, tossing 33 pitches in the first and being pulled by Black after the inning was over.
There is something wrong, and what made Peavy so attractive (being locked into a contract for the next three seasons) now appears more like a burden. The return from the White Sox wasn’t that great, but Towers was seeking to close the deal until Peavy refused it. One should ask why Towers was so anxious to pull the trigger on that deal, and the only answer I can come up with is that he figures Peavy’s stock will decline as the season progresses and the offers will be even worse by the end of July.
Time to look elsewhere.

Not only that
but Peavy’s not really cheap any more, either. He’s got $11M/year this year, and $13M/year next. So one of the principle motivations for trading for him is really gone, unless you think he’ll be both healthy and effective.
Witty .sig goes here.

Here's what I'm willing to give up for Peavy...
Shane Loux, Eric Aybar, Reggie Willits and 1 or 2 prospects.
Although his value might be questionable, Peavy is still a commodity. But I have fallen off the ban wagon to send the farm for Peavy. And if he could be had for a player blocking Brandon Wood, a RP, a glorified bench warmer and a few prospect I think I’d go for it. I wouldn’t be willing to trade Brandon Wood. I wouldn’t be willing to trade a starting player.

Funny, the Pads wouldn't want one of them.
They would want Weaver, Santana and Wood with a prospect
Sorry, they dont want our crap.

Free Agents dont have great trade value
Truth is if Big John Lackey wont guarantee he will be back, a non contender will have zero use for him as a rent a player. If John will walk from us, he will be even more likely to walk from SD.
Since he has compared his worth to that of CC Sabathia… anything short of a trade to NY probably isnt going to happen, nobody else will have the money or interest in signing him for his asking price given his back to back trips to the disabled list.
Big John’s greatest value this year is to the Angels. Enjoy him while he is here, because nobody is going to want to trade for him. He just may be on the mound in game 7 of the 2009 world series for us.
Any trade that includes Eric Aybar will be high on my list. His value is much greater for a team that doesnt have a Jeter, Furcal or Wood than for those who do. He is just a big ole speed bump that our manager has a unhealthy loyalty for.
