Are you kidding?
Dondo and Bulger cost us 5 runs, which were decisive. GMJ was bad. Vlad was bad. But they didn’t hurt us like Dondo and Bulger.
Not kidding
0-5, bad throw contributed to the tying run.
You're not saying that because of the throw, are you?
It was a good throw. If Kendry doesn’t get in the way, it’s right to Naps.

half-right
You probably already know all of this. Technically, Kendry wasn’t “in the way.” He was supposed to be cutting off the throw, which is the job of the first baseman when the pitcher backs up home plate and there on runners in scoring position. And it is the catcher’s job to tell the cut-off man to “cut” or not. So, Naps most likely told Kendry to catch the ball. The problem is, he didn’t catch a very catchable throw.

In defense of Bulger...
He has been our only quality reliever over the past few months. And the last time he had the bases jammed he struck out pedroia and got big papi into a crap ground out.
I think Soth’s decision to bring him in wasnt so bad…tough luck though.

by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on Jun 7, 2009 8:43 PM PDT up reply actions
All right, all right.
That’s fair enough. Yet the statistically high probability that with the bases loaded Bulger would be the one to give up the tater, I’m not sure that that was the Soth’s most brilliant move ever—I think it’s more frustrating that Soth left him in the second time the bases were juiced, after he’d already walked a guy and given up a fly to Center. Errors aside, if Matthews didn’t have a particularly strong arm, that would have been a regular RBI, easily.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

Of course,
The strong arm of Matthews is probably what the Soth was depending on anyway…

and I don’t think that is doable…the Escobar to the pen thing is a nice idea, but realistically using his surgically repaired shoulder on a daily basis is a BAD idea…I just don’t see the options in-house!

GMJ is BOTG for me
The guy has no right to be playing MLB right now. He needs to just be released and someone from the minors brought up. Do you guys realize he is doing considerably worse now than when he was released like 4 times. Yea he has a 2 more years on his contract, but do you really want him actually playing those 2 years? His contract is a sunk cost, we are going to pay it regardless, we might as well get some production. Pettit would do a lot better than a .600 OPS and he’s actually a future part of this team in that he’ll probably wind up as their 4th OF.

It's ALL about the bullpen.
If the ‘pen doesn’t get straightened out, we are screwed. This is the 9th or 10th game the ‘pen has blow already this year, and we are only 1/3 the way through the season. Take even HALF of those blown saves (I don’t expect perfection) and convert to wins and we are 10-12 games over .500. That would put us in 1st place.
Trades? Is anyone shopping reliable relief pitching?

Quantifiable GMJ bashing: HE SHOULD BE PAYING THE ANGELS
FanGraphs has some very cool metrics regarding what a player’s total contribution is worth in terms of dollars. You can go to the link below to read up on it if you wish.
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/glossary/
I will however cut straight to the point. It’s no surprise that GMJ is not helping the Angels win this year. But he is SO bad that his worth so far this year is negative $4.6 million, meaning the Angels should be paying him less than zero given his performance. But take comfort! He’ll actually be pulling in around $10 million this year. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Feel better?

I feel that Bulger is the Angels player most responsible for the outcome of today's game
I also believe that with today’s loss, the Halos have now lost more games when leading after the 8th inning than all of last year (total of 9 last year). Not good for a team that relies on winning close games…

Yeah
BP made a big deal about how the Angels were so lucky last year because they lead the the league in winning 1-run games. Guess the Angels wanted to show they wouldn’t keep it up and could be lucky in other ways…except now they’re just terribly unlucky.

Matthews
Should have been 5-for-5 with two home runs, six RBIs, four runs scored and two steals for good measure.
The fact he can’t have games like that befuddles me. Isn’t he a $10 million dollar player?
Maybe I should take a step back and not him the ‘end-all’ scapegoat for someone else’s fail.
Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?
I gave it to Bulger, but Vlad gets an honorary
Bulger is was the most technically accurate call for this game, but I think Vlad deserves an automatic honorary BOTG for every game he fails to get an extra base-hit, OR hits into a DP when we needed the runs.
GMJ is horrible, sure, but we expected and planned for him to be horrible from day 1. Vlad is horrible and we desperately need him to be the hero he used to be.
The days of Vlad being the man are numbered IMO
This year Hunter has replaced Vlad as the man.
Hopefully Vlad is just rusty and can become a nice complementary player this year for the Halos. Until that time comes, he should not be batting 3rd with his rally killing DPs.
RIP Nick Adenhart
Trade imminent?
Is a trade imminent at this point for bullpen help? The answer certainly isn’t in-house anymore, and maybe package together a deal with Aybar for some sort of reliever…
This would allow Brandon Wood a chance to play and could help the bullpen. At this point, any sort of help is needed… A team will never win a division or a World Series with a bullpen like the one we’re stuck with right now.
It’s time Tony and Arte to pull the rabbit out of the hat, and work some magic.
RIP Nick Adenhart
2009 Is for You
Maybe the Angels can use this guy
Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?
He wouldn't help...
…unless you want to use him as a set-up man. FWIW, he has the same number of saves as Fuentes (15), although K-Rod has fewer blown saves and a much lower ERA.
Where we are REALLY screwing up is in set-up roles. Speier, Bulger, Shields, Arredondo, are far worse than last year. There just isn’t a guy in the bullpen that has earned any trust or faith (including Fuentes).

Fun facts about Jason Bulger
Courtesy of Baseball Reference:
1. With today’s bases-juiced bomb, Bulger now leads the major leagues with three grand slams allowed—and in just 24 innings pitched! Only three other pitchers have allowed more than one.
2. That’s 3 slams in 8 bases-loaded situations. The opponents: noted sluggers Ichiro Suzuki, Jason Kubel, and Clete Thomas, who have 16 home runs between them.
3. Only five teams have hit more grand slams all year than Jason Bulger has allowed in 24 IP: the Phillies, Rays, Twins, Tigers, and Rockies.
4. Twenty-two teams have hit fewer grand slams all year than Jason Bulger has allowed in 24 IP, including the Angels, one of the three teams with zero (the other two are Atlanta and San Diego).
5. Out of Bulger’s 28 fly balls allowed, 3 were grand slam home runs. That’s a grand-slam-per-fly-ball rate of 10.7%. He’s also averaging 1 slam per 8 IP, which would put him on pace for 9 grand slams over a full season of 75 IP.
6. Nolan Ryan owns the record for most grand slams allowed over an entire career with 10 in 5386 IP. Bulger would blow that away by more than 6700%.
Small sample sizes are amusing. Obviously Jason Bulger hasn’t been bitten by some mystical gland-slam-bad-luck bug. He wasn’t even responsible for all four runs in each situation. But he is a fly-ball pitcher with control problems, which means he allows lots of baserunners and lots of long fly balls. The real blame here goes to Scioscia for continually bringing him in with runners on base. He’s just not that good of a pitcher. Less Brendan Donnelly 2.0, more Chris Bootcheck 1.1. He might be useful for pitching garbage time, but two on, one out in the bottom of the 8th of a one-run ballgame? No way.
But out of this bullpen, who do you bring in in that situation? That’s what makes me sad. All of the options are bad. I probably just leave Arredondo in to deal with his own mess. He gets ground balls and Polanco swings at anything, so there’s a good chance of a double play. But with Bulger you’d better hope those long fly balls he gives up stay in the yard.
Maybe Scioscia thought he was a good choice because Comerica has such a big outfield, but a sac fly wouldn’t help either. More likely Scioscia was going by his gut instinct that Bulger’s been pitching well lately, so he’ll probably pitch well now. He gambled and lost, which he seems to have done a lot of this year. I used to credit Scioscia for excellent bullpen management, but before this year he’s always had reliable guys with well-defined roles. Not too many hard choices to make. But he seems completely lost with this squad. It’s the pitchers who are doing poorly, but Scioscia isn’t making things any better by playing the percentages the wrong way.
I’m going to run down to the stationer and buy Scot Shields a get-well-soon card, maybe some balloons, a teddy bear, and a heart-shaped box of chocolate candies. He can’t return from the DL and figure out how to pitch again too soon for this team.

The thing about Bulger in my opinion is
he’s Jekyll and Hyde. When he is getting his breaking pitches over (he wants to start batters off with curves btw) then he can be a dominant pitcher as he was in May. When he’s not getting his breaking pitches over then hitters can sit on his fastball and that is when homers happen. It’s pretty easy to tell too when he has his stuff and when he doesn’t. Unfortunately he was left out too long today, but kinda hard to blame Soth because he doesn’t have many choices right now.
Personally I see no reason for Escobar to be in the rotation as long as Palmer is pitching well. Our bullpen is an obvious weakness and in the playoffs our starting rotation would be OVERKILL as only 3 starters are needed. Even right now if the Angels made the playoffs they’d have to tell two of their starting staff they are in the bullpen. You might as well tell Escobar now. I mean personally I don’t see him getting starts in the playoffs barring a DOMINANT second half with Weaver doing so well, Lackey being the de facto ace and the Angels committing to Santana with a big contract.
They might as well just tell Escobar to get used to the bullpen right now IMO.
The thing about Bulger in my opinion is
he shouldn’t be in the major leagues.

I’m sure you remember a time not too long ago when this time of the year when this team would already be out of the playoffs run. I know this site is here for discussion but its hard to get into the fray when its just every shitting on Soth and our team.
I think that while this season has been hard, it also has been really interesting. Growing pains are tough but so far I’ve been excited by the likes of Palmer, Naps seems to be getting better, K-Mo turned out to be pretty solid, Juan Rivera is pulling through after a bunch of seasons on the bench, WTY is killing it out there and living up the hype finally…I dunno…it just turns me off when people talk like they want Doug Radar back in.

Did Doug Radar manage when the Angels payroll was consistently Top 6 in all of MLB
and when his scouts got him John Lackey, Santana, Saunders, Weaver? Don’t think so, he was probably trying to figure out who was better Scott Lewis or Julio Valera.
Outside of Angels blogs a ton of people think Soth is horribly overrated, and I’m not talking just about M’s, A’s and Rangers fanboys.
Just saying you can’t really compare Soth to Doug Radar……
why not?
Was the team he took the World Series on a payroll that was in the top 6 of MLB?
Also, when someone like Dan Patrick says Mike Scioscia is the best manager in the game, I tend to respect him more than 99% of the blog heads out there.
Also, I am fascinated that you even lean towards suggesting Doug Radar is underrated and that Soth is overrated. You’re really are amazing.

by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on Jun 8, 2009 9:16 AM PDT up reply actions
I said NOTHING positive about Doug Radar
What I said is that you can’t really compare them just like apples and oranges. One managed a team run by Jackie Autry that was very frugal, one managed with a superior player development system and probably the best owner in MLB.
I was too young when Radar managed to give any insights about him. I do however feel Soth is overated. His flaws are something you see if you follow the team religiously and you see Joe Saunders being sent down for a veteran when he was our best starter one April, when Jered Weaver was sent down for a veteran in the middle of the pennant race when he was our best starter. Soth is excellent at building team unity and that is exactly the stuff that is going to get noticed by the likes of Dan Patrick who I bet if you asked watches very few actual Angels games each year. And yes I understand you have to give players a semi-long leash in order to build a team but IMO Soth carries it overboard and I know there are a lot of people who agree with me including Steve Bisheff (with his GMJ comment) who actually follows the Angels rather than a guy at ESPN who most of the people here seem to think do a horrible job of covering the Angels.
Let me just say I do respect your opinions BHM. I just feel you have unjustly categorized me as ONLY complaining about players and management. I mean before you said I was at the head of the “circle jerk of bitching”. Just in this one thread I had defended Bulger which you and I agree on, and I said what a good job Rivera is doing, and I even complemented Howie here as well as in the game thread (and correctly predicted a hit for him) and said he’s back based on what I saw his last 3 abs in Detroit. Trust me I am looking for positives. But when a team with the 6th highest payroll is hovering around .500 I tend to think there are going to be a few more negatives than positives.
Word...
Careful though, we were owned by Disney when we won the WS and our farm system was not THAT developed yet.
Also, maybe its just that Steve Bisheff is rubbing off on you. He has to be the biggest critique of the Halos that until he sent me a personal email explaining his sentiments, I was positive that he hated the Angels and was forced to write about them. Read more Sam Miller…less Steve!

I know I’ve had issues with what Bisheff has said in the past and I totally agree about Sam from everything I’ve read of him.
Honestly though I hardly read any newspaper articles about the Angels. I only really started reading stuff about the Angels online again since WiHaloFan is doing such a fantastic job of providing the links for all of us.
Can you look at what I actually posted?
I said the Angels played have been playing bad fundamental baseball. Is that true or false?
I said GMJ should be DFA’d because he’s been flat horrible for a long time, he could have gone 3-5 today and he should still be released. His stats are getting worse every year, and are far worse than when he was being released every fortnight by crappy teams, and oh yea that was BEFORE he was linked to PEDs.
Then I DEFENDED Jason Bulger because he has actually shown some talent. He was our best reliever in May. Yea he has some horrible outing but he’ll also miss in a couple of outings in a row where his potential shines. What kind of potential do GMJ or Q have? You want to anwer me that?
Oh that’s right, you don’t actually contribute a whole lot about the Angels, you’d rather talk about our divisional rivals and their managerial situation.
Sure I blast a lot of players, but I also say great things about a lot of players.
In the spirit of this thread...

One thing is certain this year for sure….Angels fans are one edge. Every loss brings out virtual venom toward our players. It’s like we’re all sitting there every game, just waiting for the bottom to drop out. I do it, too. Let’s face it, guys. We got hit hard with Nick Adenhart’s death. BY we I mean the fans. We feel like Jared Weaver, that this season should be one that honors Nick, and we’re watching a team that is falling unusually short of meeting even rational expectations, much less the larger burden we as fans have put on them this year. Every loss feels like further affirmation that we are ultimately doomed to failure. We’re also fighting the naysayers who say our run of excellence is over. It’s bigger than usual this year, isn’t it? It just feels like much more is at stake this time, right? It feels almost like we are fighting against fate itself and we’re losing. WHo knows how this will end?
