wood starts @ first for salt lake
an interesting observation about the bees game tonight. brandon wood is starting @1b w/matt brown @3b. brown @3rd isn't unusual but wood at 1st is pretty odd. could this be foreshadowing a potential roster move. my guess is that ninja wants to see if wood could play first in a pinch then quinlan could be swapped for an expiring contract of a bullpen arm w/quinny being a free agent after this season.

I like it.
but can they please show some confidence in morales batting from the right side? Oh wait…he’s batting .190 from the right side….put Wood as righty 1B.
I believe we’re going to trade a middle infielder along with Q if they’re bringing Wood up….
#34, never forget.
I agree with your thinking
DFA Q, Let Wood start against Lefties at 1B and at 3B/SS a few games a week against righties.
Q isnt getting DFA'd
We signed a new, one-year deal with him this past off-season for I think around 1 mil. We aren’t going to DFA a dude who we just signed a million dollar contract with.
Now a trade is a possibility…and I think Q is probably good enough to start at 3b or 1b for some crappy team out there. Question is, could we get anything out of him.
I think Soth hold Quinlan close though…so I dont plan on seeing him go anywhere.

Just checked the Bees website...
…and found Freddie Sandoval (regular 3B man) is on the 7 day DL. So, they took Matt Brown (regular 1B man) and shifted him to 3B, and gave Woodie a shot at 1B.
Not sure what to make of the whole thing. I would guess it would have been easier to shift Woodie to 3B and keep Brown at 1B.
Just trying to mix things up a bit? I think the world has gone plum friggin crazy.
what?
a 7 day DL?

7 Day DL ....
…. just another reason that minor league records are the science fiction of baseball!
Sandoval, the forgotten man
In three years time, the guy who may be making the greatest impact on the Angels’ roster may be Sandoval instead of Rodriguez or Wood.
Sandoval has been playing 3B, but he hits and runs like a SS (.335/.389/.514 in 2008, a switch-hitter with 15 HR and 92 runs scored). Adjusting for AAA inflation, he won’t hit a ton of HR in the bigs, but he has gap power and runs the bases well (11 SB thus far this season).
It isn’t unreasonable to imagine a left side of the infield with Wood at 3B and Sandoval at SS by 2011.
As for Rodriguez, he had 21 HR in 66 games last season in SLC, and has 21 HR already in his first 54 games. That’s not to say he isn’t hot now and won’t cool off, but his .655 SLG this season corresponds nicely with the .645 he posted last year—one likes to see consistency. If the Angels don’t re-sign Figgins to play the OF (he may well get a bigger offer than one from the Angels) and assuming Abreu doesn’t stay into 2010, it isn’t unreasonable to project Rivera in RF and Rodriguez in LF.

Good points.
There is a lot of talent ripening (if not rotting) on the vine in SLC. This team needs to open some space at the big league level and see who is going to be strong enough to play in the bigs and who isn’t.
This is starting to get ridiculous.

and you know wood had to borrow a glove...
to play first.
most excellent
DFA GMJ for S-Rod, DFA Q for Wood
Are you going to cover GMJ's contract?
Im sure Arte does not want to just give GMJ a bajillion dollars to go play for another team.
DFAing GMJ will not happen.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
How much money would you be willing to pay to ensure that the Red Sox CF goes 0-5 with at least 1 error?
We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.
thats not weird...
S-Rod has played a good amount of time in the OF including a game or two during this past Spring Training. Another reason to bring him up in my opinion…

perhaps the intent is for the guys in ANA to see the changes that are happening down there...
…to show them that they are making preparations for movement. Serves two purposes:
1. Light a fire under some folks
2. Get some guys like SRod some experience in CF so he can backup Torii when HGH hits the fan
Miss you Nick...! RIP
forget B Wood and S-Rod
they have a guy that just turned 19 hitting over 400! hehe
I wonder if they're giving him a taste of higher level competition.
Before sending him back to Orem to start as their second baseman. He’s got wheels too – he stole 22 bases in ’07.
wow
S-Rod hits another out…

yeah...
That’s the only thing that worries me about Rodriguez. He’s pretty much averaged a K/game in his minor league career. Unless his power is legit (like Brandon’s) that’s going to be a disaster at the major league level. Especially if its a bat speed issue. Anyone out there have thoughts on this? rghan, I’m looking at you…
3 K's for Wood....
bleh……….

then if that is the case they seriously need to trade Wood.........
because really why else hold on to him?
I’d personally much rather he play……..but if he isnt gonna play might as well get someone for him that can contribute, whether it be bullpen help or a young OF………something anything……..having him in SLC is effin POINTLESS!

Not Wood, Aybar.
I thought the whole point of this thread is that they’re seeing if Wood can play 1st so we can trade Aybar and bring Woody up to play SS and occasional 1st. And Figgins stays at 3rd this year, and maybe switches to OF next year.
Keep those hammies limber, boys.

Not sure what's happening to my posts.
There was supposed to be a body to this, and I didn’t post it twice. Hmm. Well, here’s another try.

IF we are moving them to trade them
the only team that needs a 1B and CF is the Giants
could we be trading them to the Giants for Cain (move Escobar to the pen)
Imagine
Lackey
Weaver
Cain
Saunders
Santana
R.I.P. Nick Adenhart #34
Can Cain hit?
Otherwise, dumb trade.
This team needs an influx of good offensive players and a handful of arms that pitch to three batters and get them out.

I fully agree
BUT it makes NO SENCE AT ALL Hunter is in CF and Morales is at 1B so Wood and S-Rod wont be seeing any regular playing time at those positions which leads me to think we are going to trade Wood and S-Rod or S-Rod and Morales
R.I.P. Nick Adenhart #34
Yes, it makes no "sence"
Cain is signed affordably through next season, isn’t a free agent until 2012, and he’s only 24. Right now, he is 7-1 with two complete games for the Giants. In addition, he’s pitched much better than his W-L record might indicate, in that he’s played on offensively-challenged Giants teams in the past two seasons. He’s not an ace, but he’s a solid #3-#5 pitcher.
If the Giants were to trade Cain for Morales/Wood and Rodriguez, the Commissioner would have to void the trade.
Now the Giants might be interested in trading Zito for any combination of those players, but in that case the Angel fans would have to void Reagins. If the justification for this square dance is to move Escobar into the bullpen, then simply insert Palmer back into the rotation. Use trade bait to get a solid set up reliever instead.

What if we were
to trade Matthews for Zito straight up?
Haha… nah I’m just kidding. I’d just as soon we DFA his ass, first.
Hah! Yep-

Anyone who thinks Quinlan is the problem
needs to watch a game or two or three. There may be a debate as to whether Brown could give us more than Q at this point, but unless Quinlan, who to my knowledge, has been a good soldier and does whatever’s asked, is somehow the reason for our bullpen melting down, DFA’ing his butt will do nothing for the team
This season just seems jinxed. If it can go wrong, it does
Of course there are other problems but Q certainly is a problem.
For the last two years his OPS has to be hovering around 600. He doesn’t have any power anymore. He doesn’t draw walks. He isn’t a guy you’d pinch-run, and he isn’t a guy you’d put in on d because his range is the area he can fall down in. Q used to be a useful bench player. That hasn’t been the case in awhile though.
It's not that keeping Q is a problem,
but trading him could be part of the solution. If someone else wants a defensively versatile, corner position player, have at him!

Hilarious
The lineup changes just mean the Bees are just trying to win a game; maybe Soth could learn something from them.
“Q” has zero trade value in bringing a quality arm to the team.
I have to admit though, all these conspiracy theories are entertaining…..
Q alone is not a commodity,
but maybe someone is asking for Aybar +1.
Keep those hammies limber, boys.
by Rally Manatee on Jun 9, 2009 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions
why we do have conspiracy theories running wild, minor league baseball teams exist
for the parent club. Fans of minor league teams are always frustrated how the parent club moves around players, etc to test things out. Often when watching a minor league game you will scratch your head as a power hitter bunts with runners on base but then you remember that the big club wants to see if he can get a bunt down. So, yes, we might be on conspiracy theories but the Bees rarely play to just win games. They play the game that the big club tells them to play.
