Lunch Thread: MLB Draft Today

The Major League Baseball Draft is broadcast LIVE at 3 PM Today!

The Angels have the 24th and 25th picks in the first round of the draft.

The Angels also have the 40th, 42nd, 48th, 80th, 110th and 141st picks in the draft and every 30th pick after that.

The Angels biggest need is power hitting. You do not draft bullpen. I cribbed this ranking of non-pitchers from a Top 50 picks list by John Sickels on his excellent Minor League Ball site.

2) Dustin Ackley, OF-1B, North Carolina
6) Donovan Tate, OF, Georgia HS
11) Grant Green, SS, Southern Cal
15) Bobby Borchering, 3B, Florida HS
16) Jared Mitchell, OF, LSU
17) Tim Wheeler, OF, Sacramento State
23) Reymond Fuentes, OF, Puerto Rico HS

24) Mike Trout, OF, New Jersey HS
25) Max Stassi, C, California HS
31) Everett Williams, OF, Texas HS
32) A.J. Pollock, OF, Notre Dame
33) Tony Sanchez, C, Boston College
34) Jason Kipnis, OF, Arizona State
40) Matt Davidson, 3B, California HS
43) Brett Jackson, OF, California
45) Jiovanni Mier, SS, California HS
47) Rich Poythress, 1B, Georgia
50) Kent Matthes, OF, Alabama

The caveat in these rankings is that many of these college players are not seniors and therefore have greater leverage in bargaining with the teams that draft them.

Here are some other names that have popped up around the internet on mock drafts and rankings

College
Chris Dominguez, 3B, Louisville
Marc Krauss, OF, Ohio
Tony Sanchez, C, Boston College
Angelo Songco, OF, Loyola Marymount

High School
Bobby Borchering, 3B, Florida HS
Randall Grichuk, OF, Texas HS
Slade Heathcott, OF, Texas HS
Tommy Joseph, C, California HS
Jake Marisnick, OF, California HS
Ruben Sierra Jr, OF, Puerto Rico HS
Jacob Stewart, OF, Colorado HS
Donavan Tate, OF, Georgia HS

I dunno about you guys

but personally I’m kind of hoping the Angels bypass a local kid who goes to school down the street, has a 96mph fastball and nice curve, and whose Dad was a fan favorite, in favor a speedy outfielder who can’t play baseball for two years because he has to go on a Mormon mission.

I think they'll take the senior OF Matthes from Alabama I think

because I read that’d he’d be a good slight overdraft for the Angels because they know they can sign him.

Mier

Jio Mier, #45 above, is in my stepdaughter’s high school class. They graduate tonight. I’ll try to see if he’s wearing a team cap underneath his mortarboard.

Not a Deep Draft

It’s supposedly not a deep draft for power hitting prospects. Whether it’s a pitcher or an every-day position player, the Halos need to draft the best talent on the board. I’m not an advocate for drafting based on major league needs. Most of these kids won’t make the big league, those that do are likely 3 or 4 years away from contributing. Filling the needs on the major league club can’t wait that long.

Draft the best athletic talent, and the club will be stronger long term.

by mustard_man on Jun 9, 2009 12:58 PM PDT reply actions

agree

and it is supposed to be a pretty good pitching draft. Just take the best off the board and let the chips fall where they may

This season just seems jinxed. If it can go wrong, it does

by Moondoggy on Jun 9, 2009 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions

eddie bane is going to be sporting wood...

when the 23rd pick is made. he might jizz in his pants when he’ll be on the clock for TWO consecutive picks (24 & 25) when he’s usually not ready to pick until the 2nd round. if i’m working the draft i would accept his card w/the picks w/surgical gloves on.

Donovan Tate has gotten a lot of buzz as a legit 5 tool guy

but even if he’s around it"ll cost more than our cheapos will pay because he’s got the college leverage going for him and he’s being advised by our good friend and season ticket holder Mr. Boros.

sac state centerfielder

He was supposed to be off the board by now. Huge, going to shift to left at some point, but hits from the left side for avg, power, and can steal a base

Randal Grichuk

“Grichuk has significant raw power but it’s a pull-oriented approach, and he’s limited to an outfield corner.”

We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.

Keith Law

Keith Law: Worst pick of the first round for me. Has pull power but he’s a corner outfielder with an extreme pull approach. Will be very, very curious to see how he does once he reaches high A-ball.

Play Wood already. Willits sucks.

Keith Law On Grichuk when he worked out for the Cards:

“The mystery team on Lamar Consolidated HS outfielder Randal Grichuk is the St. Louis Cardinals, who had him in for a second workout today. It’s still not a lock that they’ll take him, but he’s clearly in consideration for their pick.”

We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.

by Stirrups on Jun 9, 2009 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

And from Futurebirds.net

“As for the player himself, Grichuk has all sorts of thunder in his bat, but he’s not fast, he doesn’t have a great arm therefore he is expected to be limited to left field. Some scouts have the idea of moving him to 2nd base where his bat would play better, and leave it to the Cardinals to share such a notion.”

We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.

From BaseballRumorMill

8:03pm With the 24th pick of the 2009 MLB Draft the Los Angeles Angels select Randal Grichuk. The Angels remain on the clock.

8:04pm Everyone knows that the Angels love high school players so where the player came from is not much of a surprise. What is a surprise is that they passed up guys like Everett Williams, Mike Trout and Reymond Fuentes.

8:05pm I like Tyler Skaggs or Garrett Gould with this next pick for the Angels.

8:08pm With the 25th pick of the 2009 MLB Draft, the Los Angeles Angels select Mike Trout. The Milwaukee Brewers are now on the clock.

8:09pm Fun scene at the draft with Trout in attendance. I think this is going to be the future of the draft in years to come as it gains steam. Harold Reyonlds tells us that they asked every player in the country to come to the draft and Trout was the only one who said yes. I have a feeling that’s going to change with the face time Trout just got.

We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.
