SI.com ranks Angels 17th in MLB in drafting over last 10 years

SI.com did a piece (which was their lead story on their home page until it switched over to Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals) which ranked all 30 major league clubs in terms of their drafts over the last 10 years.

So how did the Angels do? Find out after the jump...

First off, here is the author's explanation of the rankings:

We examined each pick for every team over the past 10 years, amounting to nearly 15,000 selections, in an effort to identify the teams that are the most successful at uncovering talent in the annual amateur entry draft. We then categorized them by how far those players have advanced in their careers, and used those relative degrees of success to determine each team's rank. Some of the most interesting findings are shown in the table below.

The Halos were 17th out of 30 clubs based on this writer's analysis.  Clearly, it's hard to say how much weight the author gave each of the factors he used in the ratings, as the Angels have drafted more MLB talent (38 to 29) and at a better percentage (38/498, or 7.63%, vs. 29/489, or 5.93%) than the top-ranked Milwaukee Brewers.  So that alone is not the metric the author used.

In any case, an interesting starting point for a discussion?  I'm not a huge baseball draft follower, although it is disconcerting to hear someone like Keith Law call the Angels's first pick of the draft the worst pick of the first round.  To be fair, the second pick seems to be more well-thought of.
