Chone Figgins made it to the All-Star Game, after all. The Angels third baseman, who finished third in last week's fan vote for the final roster spot, was added to the American League roster today when Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria pulled out of the game because of an infected ring finger on his right hand.
- LA TIMES

Texas Ranger Michael Young will replace Longoria in the starting lineup. Figgins is a reserve. It is his first All Star nod.

I'm happy for Figgins

But I’d rather have our team well rested for the start of the second season. Time to turn it up. Does Figgins get the All-Star Bonus?

Amazing

That the best utility player in baseball has the most runs and the 10th best OBP in the AL. One could almost make the argument that with numbers like that, he deserves the everyday job he’s been given.

Apparently Figgy is going to have trouble getting to the game:

Once the initial euphoria wore off for Figgins, who did not hide his disappointment at finishing third in last week’s fan vote for the final AL roster spot, his next thought was this: Can I get to St. Louis in time for the game?

The Angels looked into securing a private jet for Figgins, who remained in Orange County over the All-Star break, but had no luck.

They then booked Figgins on a nonstop flight from Los Angeles to St. Louis that was scheduled to leave LAX at about noon and arrive in St. Louis at about 5:20 p.m. CDT, less than two hours before the scheduled first pitch.

Angels equipment manager Kenny Higdon rushed to the park to pack Figgins’ uniform, gloves and spikes, and a team employee drove the equipment bag to LAX to deliver to Figgins.

Getting Figgins, who is hitting .310 with an AL-leading 68 runs, 16 doubles, seven triples and 27 stolen bases, from the airport in St. Louis to Busch Stadium in time for the game will be a challenge — the airport is 12 1/2 miles from the stadium.

Traffic heading into downtown is expected to be heavy, and there will be extra security because of the presence of President Obama, who is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

I flew to STL out of SNA last month.

Wonder why he had to go out of LAX. Seems silly. And it is a pain to get downtown from the airport. There’s massive construction and road closures all over between the two points. Took us about 40 minutes to get from STL to the Crowne Plaza (overlooks Busch) on a Monday evening.

by ReggieBullits on Jul 14, 2009 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

?

AA was the only carrier that had a direct flight from SNA to STL. They stopped that route about a year ago. Now, if you want to go from SNA to STL (on AA) you will change planes is Dallas. The normal flying time from SNA to STL (direct) was about 3:45. Westbound flights are always faster. This of course doesn’t include any realted flight delays though.

I call BS on the chartered flight idea. Charter flights are always available. Just got to have the $$$.

God needed a starter. RIP #34

by 3rd Echelon on Jul 14, 2009 2:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Cool.

Wasn’t trying to be a dick. I used to fly to “the middle” all the time. Flying out of LAX is the way to go though still becuase they have direct flights to STL. SNA is a nice little airport but very limited in terms of direct desitnations. AA for example only offers direct service to Chicago and Dallas (their hub sites) from SNA.

If you have to rely on a connecting flight, you’re most likely screwed.

God needed a starter. RIP #34

President Figgins

Figgins was notified early Tuesday morning at his home in Southern California and immediately caught a noon plane from Los Angeles to St. Louis. He was scheduled to land at 5:20 p.m. CT in St. Louis and a police escort was being arranged to help him cut through the traffic. It was not going to be easy because of security measures put in place by President Obama’s participation in the All-Star Game.

“They’re probably going to think he’s the President,” Angels reliever Brian Fuentes joked. “It’s great that he made it. He’s deserving.”

If he took a noon commercial flight...

According to flight tracker:
AAL812 Arrived Tue 12:00PM PDT Tue 05:03PM CDT American Airlines Inc. McDonnell Douglas MD-82

He arrived, and traffic looks good, so he should be there in the next five to ten minutes if he’s not there already.

Every year Ichiro Suzuki

goes to the All Star game and he acts his typical self … stoic Japanese, Zen-style. Calm. Not speaking a word.

And then before the game he goes off on a F-bomb and profanity laced tirade in English against the National League, which shocks all the first-time AL All-Stars and everyone else who doesn’t think Ichiro knows any English.

Ichiro’s pre-game peptalk is basically: “F—- the National League they suck they can suck my … National League are a bunch of ….. F—- Lincecum- (insert name of National League pitcher here). F—- the National League we’re going to beat their asses etc etc !!!.”

Bleep bleep bleep. It’s purportely hilarious and and it is now an AL All-Star tradition. Ichiro is probably doing this now as we speak.
