Angels broadcasters: stop the carousel between radio and TV
I've been reading critiques of the broadcasters for several years, and I think fan complaints over that time led to switching Physioc, Hudler, and Markas back and forth from TV to radio. After experimenting for 2-3 years, I think it is time to make a decision on permanent TV-only and radio-only broadcasters. I like the continuity of having the same people in their respective venues every night.
Steve Physioc and Rex Hudler work best together and work best together on TV. Hudler in particular sucks all the air out of the radio booth by talking too much, talking about his career and himself, and trying to be an entertainer. He can be a disciplined analyst but more often than not chooses not to do so. It's obvious that he distracts the radio play-by-play broadcaster whether it be Physioc or Smith. Rex is a more restrained performer on TV, probably because he is more experienced in that medium.
I didn't hear many complaints about Rory Markas until he went to TV. His TV partner Gubicza is Rex Hudler without the personality. Markas on radio has the instinct of when to talk, when to intersperse humor, and in other words he lets the game take center stage. Terry Smith compliments Markas very well and the difference in his play-by-play is like night and day when he is working with Rory as opposed to when he knows Rex is going to butt in every available minute. To me Rex can't accept the limitations of a color commentator and if he is to continue on radio he should pursue a career as a play-by-play man.
I think it is time to stop this experimentation and either accept the current broadcasters in the capacities they do best on a permanent basis or replace them. The Angels have been a model of consistency this decade and hopefully beginning next season that philosophy will find its way back to the broadcast booth.

Interesting
But I will say one thing, which may or may not have any bearing on this particular discussion: the best radio broadcasts I heard all year included Rex… during spring training.
Rex with the tie loosened was the most enjoyable broadcaster I heard this year. Back in spring when it theoretically didn’t matter. Why? Because he was just being himself. On the air, during the game, he was bantering with the hawkers, talking with Rory about the flight in they just took, and asking him what he wanted on the hot dog he was going to buy him in a few because he hadn’t eaten anything that day except sunflower seeds on the plane.
If Rex used his spring training persona during the regular season everyone would be a convert to the Wonder Dog, regardless of what medium he was in.

People Need to separate the two
Phyzz "humors" Rex, weakening his ability to take himself seriously – REX really shines in the presence of other broadcasters.

Here's my idea
Simulcast radio and TV, with Rory and Terry alternating play-by-play as they do now on radio, Guby doing color in the booth, and Rex floating around the stands among the fans. That would seem to provide every combination not including Phys.
And while I agree with the Rev’s sentiments regarding Phys, I will admit that I think it is unfair to say he is the worst announcer in baseball. He’s not even the worst one the Angels have ever had (I nominate Joe Buttitta for that distinction). Phys is polished and professional in terms of presentation and voice control, there’s no doubt of that. The problem is simply that, as the Rev has explained thoroughly, he seems completely unaware of who his primary audience is: the Angels fan. I guess if you like Joe Buck’s play-by-play, you’ll love Phys’. I hate Joe Buck’s play-by-play.
One combo not mentioned above is Terry and Guby. This did occur once this season, and I thought it worked well. Apparently they are friends from childhood.

unlovely analysis of Phys I have read on this site. As a Phys fan, I’ll agree with your points.

I actually like Joe Buck when he's not doing games
I’ve heard him many times in radio interviews, and in those he’s very funny and loose. But I suppose having to work with McCarver would make anyone temporarily neurasthenic. McCarver is such a pompous know-it-all. Sure, he knows a lot about the game, but not as much as he thinks he does, and certainly not as much as the men in the dugouts actually managing the game.
And thanks for your graciousness.

I like Phyz and can't stand Joe Buck.
First of all, I don’t want to listen to a broadcaster knob off their team the whole game. If I wanted to hear that I’d listen to a White Sox broadcast . . . but I usually end up throwing my remote against the wall and breaking it when I’m forced to do that. Phyz gives an objective call of the game that true baseball fans should appreciate. If the opposing team/player is about to do something significant, it should be brought to the viewer’s attention, regardless of who they cheer for.
Second, Joe Buck has absolutely zero emotion to his broadcasts. Listen to the guy call a homerun. Brutal. You can’t tell if it is going to be a lazy fly ball to short center or a mash to the upper deck for the lead. He’s terrible. At least Phyz can get the heart pumping a little.
Third, Phyz and Hud say they “click” together, the organization thinks they work best together, and everyone else out there with a say in it, as far as I know, thinks that they are a good combo. They aren’t going to be switching things up any time soon, so let’s get over it.
RIP NA
by NoDakHalo on Jul 15, 2009 7:32 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Fair enough
As I said, Buck is neurasthentic when he calls games, so I agree with you about his lack of emotion. But there’s a difference between being a homer (which I assume is what you mean by “knobbing off”) and presenting the action accurately and with an Angel fan’s perspective in mind. From all that I’ve read on this subject on HH, most people prefer the latter to a purely objective call, or whatever it is that Phys does.
. . . the organization thinks they work best together, and everyone else out there with a say in it, as far as I know, thinks that they are a good combo.
Then why did they mess with the setup in the first place?

Physioc and Rex are my choice by default for TV
I don’t understand why the decision was made to start the carousel in the first place unless whoever hired and fired these guys was a dissatisfaction of the jobs done by Physioc/Rex.
My guess for the carousel was to try and go in a different direction and give other ‘personalities’ bigger roles.
Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?

Rex and Phys
…or Rex and Rory/Terry.
Gubi is simply terrible. No personality, no flair. And i don’t find his commentary particularly insightful or interesting.
I have always loved Rory and Terry on the radio, and I definitely notice a palpable difference between the Rory/Rex chemistry and the Phys/Rex chemistry: Rex and Phys “click” on the air.
Still, I agree that this whole carousel is ridiculous and should stop. Pick a combo and stick with it, Arte!

To each according to his taste
But I honestly can’t understand anyone thinking Guby has no personality. I like the guy; he may look like a “pretty-boy”, but make no mistake, he’s a scrapper of the old school.
I would agree with you about stopping the carousel, but I’m afraid it would stop in the wrong place. At least I’m happy with the broadcast team on TV half the time.
As far as the reason for the carousel, I have no inside info, but I doubt it would have been undertaken if the FO were happy with Phys and Hud on TV.
by rspencer on Jul 15, 2009 1:25 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like Guby too
But it is like, ’he’s just happy to be there’ in the booth and doesn’t command a presence.
He is a nice guy but doesn’t show much humor, insight, opinion, anger or even sarcasm.
He doesn’t have to be a blowhard, but he has to disagree with Rory once in a while.
Guby and Physioc would be a great broadcasting duo to put me to sleep.
Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?

Carousel sucks; Rory/Terry is the best radio mix, Phyzz blows
I’m not the world’s biggest Terry Smith fan, but the Rory/Terry radio combo struck me as particularly unbroke. Rory’s got a voice and pacing made for radio, and the two were sparing enough when it came to pointless banter (compared to, say, the awful Rick Monday/Charlie Steiner radio combo).
I also like Jose Mota as a sideline reporter/interviewer/interpreter. He knows about the game, he communicates w/ the Spanish speakers, and he’s not very good at all English-language play-by-play (I’d be curious what people think of his Spanish broadcasting, which I’ve never listened to).
Hud’s a big puppy, and just needs to be deployed in the best way possible. Unfortunately, pairing him w/ Phyzz brings out the worst in both. Gubi doesn’t add all that much, but he’s mostly unobtrusive & definitely humble, which can be funny.
So basically, I preferred the ways things were before the carousel, with one exception — Steve Physioc. This is Southern California; surely we can get a better TV announcer to pair up with Hud, preferably one who adds to our sense of knowledge about the team & the game, and who isn’t from the Joe Buck school of bland, contentless slickery.
This is a world-class organization, and it deserves world-class announcers. Short of that (and we’re short of that), we shouldn’t have any bad announcers. Steve Physioc is a bad announcer. There are worse in the league, but we have long since passed the point where we compare our franchise to the Washington freaking Nationals.

I like to think that people wanted fresh blood in there...
They tried Mota as the play by play and that failed. I also think that Hud and Phys probably got tired of too much travel and time away from the family. That’s my opinion. Broadcasting 162 games is BRUTAL and a lot of time away from home.
I love this team.

It’s the job that they applied for. If the season is too long for them, maybe they should work for the nightly news. They also have months off during the Winter to spend with their family’s.

Arte, stop this crazy thing!
I guess I never paid as close attention as some of you; I can only give my gut feeling instead of analysis, but I’ve heard these guys call hundreds of innings, so at hope I can trust my instincts on this one.
Guby, you just kind of get on my nerves. You’re a smart guy and you know baseball, but your ribbing and banter with Rory seem out of place on TV, and sometimes just a little too personal as well. And I just can’t stand the sound of your voice. So Mark, you’re fired from the TV booth.
Rory, I like your style. I’d love to keep you on TV, but if you’re calling with Wonder Dog I’m afraid your style may be cramped, to the listeners’ detriment (but I’d like to hear it first). I love your work with Terry-you guys call a great game, and it would seem the wrong idea to break you up. Sorry, Rory, but you’re fired from the TV booth.
Rex, you’re a favorite of mine. Enthusiasm, knowledge, and a willingness to embarrass yourself are very endearing qualities-you broadcast like you played (and I mean that as a compliment of course!). But unfortunately, those skills are on radio somewhat grating, even with the Phyzz by your side. I don’t know why radio and TV should be so different from a broadcasting point of view, but they are; you, my friend, are not cut out for radio. Rex, congratulations, you’re on TV!
Phyzz, I’m not as down on you as some other folks are. A couple of your mannerisms bother me a little, but your pairing with Hud is a great match! You have a great voice and know a ton about the game. I’m not going to lie and say I wouldn’t like to see Hud try it with Rory on the tube, but if that won’t happen, Phyzz, then we need you in the TV booth.
Terry and Jose, keep up the good work…..

agree
The Angel organization is great, but who ever is in charge of the broadcast team is awful. I take it thats Tim Mead. The carousel is awful, and I have no clue who is broadcasting on a day to day basis. The only good news is that Jose Mota is not announcing. Have a tv team and a radio team. Period. btw has anyone ever heard Mel Proctor? Heard him once doing a clipper game on radio, great baseball voice.

Here's the site for the broadcasting schedule:
This is the radio broadcasting schedule: http://www.am830klaa.com/events.htm. The announcers not listed are on TV for that particular game.
We may not agree on who is the best in which capacity, but I like continuity all season long and as someone who prefers to listen to radio, it’s a letdown for me when Rory and Terry aren’t broadcasting the game. I’m listening to the telecast on MLB-TV tonight and don’t think Rory is doing as good a job on TV.
