George Sherrill rumor

I didn't see any other post on this subject yet. www.mlbtraderumors.com mentions the Angels are interested in George Sherrill as a setup man. An O's scout was at the game last night. Apparently they're asking for 2 top prospects, possibly Wood and Reckling. To me, that sounds a little steep. With the possibility of Dondo coming back into form, I'd rather gamble on our own boys shaping up. What do you think?

pass

no need for another closer. don’t think he would like the roll as set up man. plus besides a’dondo coming back we have one “T” returning soon also.

he had season-ending surgery on his knee. Patellar tendon, I believe.

way to steep for Sherrill

I’d give ‘em Aybar and a young arm, but that’s still probably too much.

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

Aybar and Shane Loux

For Sherrill. That would work for me.

Reckling and Aybar

is not too much when you say the following phrase:

Speier in October.

by Rev Halofan on Jul 19, 2009 6:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

great point

Aybar is a nowhere man, Sitting in his Nowhere Land, Making all his nowhere plans for nobody.

by princeton11loveshalos on Jul 19, 2009 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Speier was left off of the playoff roster last year.

At the rate he’s going this year, I don’t see any way he will be included on this year’s playoff roster either. O’Sullivan and Palmer are more deserving.
In fact, I’ll be surprised if he’s on the roster through the end of the year. He’s toast.

VERY true

But Reckling? Why?

by TheAntiSox on Jul 20, 2009 10:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I honestly don't get why nobody asks for Izturis.

Dude is an offensively solid switch hitter and can play 3 different infield positions with above average D.

I think there's a lot we don't hear about.

……..and there’s a lot we hear about that is sheer marketing.

Is that how I found Halos Heaven?

I don’t really remember how I found this site. I don’t know which came first for me, MLB Trade Rumors or Halos Heaven. But I check both of them routinely through out the day. I think Rev. Halo Fan has thoughts and opinions that I subscribe too. I truly enjoy sharing my opinions with all the folks who post here and I enjoy the game day chats.

So seriously, tip of the hat to Rev and all who post here. Makes my day a little more interesting.

P.S. Does that make up for yesterday Rev?

in years past i could see sherrill but with this team we...

could have (if sherrill is acquired) too many late inning lefties. that is something i never thought i’d say.

by thejd on Jul 19, 2009 7:52 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

3 - Fuentes, Oliver, then add Sherrill.

Is too many lefties a problem? thejd – I’m a lefty. You better watch it. That’s discrimination. Ha ha. But seriously, the majority of hitters do not hit lefties as well. So is stacking you bullpen with lefties a bad thing?

I’m not suggesting we go after him, as I made clear in my post, but I don’t think Sherrill being a lefty is a reason I’d pass. The O’s asking for too much, and the promise of Dondo are the reasons I’d pass.

This season is my best chance to get called out of the stands to pitch.

Acquiring Sherrill

without giving up too much (Wood, Reckling , or Aybar) would be a wonderful thing. Not only would we have a heretofore effective lefty specialist for this season and next, after Oliver retires, but our friends in the Pacific Northwest would be furious.

by wumbug on Jul 19, 2009 11:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

I can’t remember where I heard it, but I thought I heard something that Oliver was going to retire after this year. If GS could be have for a reasonable price and be under team control until 2011, you have to make that move, right?

Obviously we don’t control what Baltimore takes in return. But If we had GS as either a lefty specialist, 8th Inning Guy, or occasional closer you’d have to think our Late-inning Bullpen would be just that more dominant.

Huh?

If this team really “cherishes” it’s prospects so much that they won’t trade for Halladay, then why in the world would they trade some of the very same prospects for a player that is significantly below the caliber of Halladay?

Sherrill is also 32 years old.

Sorry guys, I just don’t think this dog will hunt…..

Also

If we’re going to dump the farm, why not do the work and create a deal for a player like Brett Anderson of the A’s. The kid has very good stuff, and has a lot of poise for a 22 year old. The kid has a bright future.

I realize that trading within the division and trading for another team’s best young talent is difficult, however this team will never make material improvements if the strategy is to sign “older” free agents and trade for “older” marginal talent with the hopes to squeeze out out one or two good years from them.

by mustard_man on Jul 20, 2009 5:01 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh man I was thinking the same thing.

I might be disliked for saying this, but I’ve like Kurt Suzuki for years. I’d welcome on the Angels. And that Anderson Kid was nails yesterday. I’d love to have him on my team.

True

Let’s be real: The price from the Angels for Sherrill can’t be that high. The Orioles are promoting him as a closer, and the Angels already have one. Sherrill would be a set-up man, but the price Baltimore would be expecting is going to be overpaying.

And while it is true that Sherrill doesn’t become a free agent until 2012, it is also true that he’ll be 34 when the 2011 season begins. He was a career minor-leaguer when the Mariners finally promoted him for good in 2006. I’m happy for his success, but I wouldn’t give up Brandon Wood and (anybody) for the right to have Sherrill for the next two years as setup guy.

I am sure some team will pay handsomely for a closer, though.
