Holy Sheet, Vicente Padilla has Swine Flu!

Rotoworld is reporting Rangers SP Vicente Padilla has contacted Swine Flu. I really hope he gets through this, and for the health and safety of his teammates and staff in the Rangers organization. It would be utterly horrible, devastating to have this thing floating through MLB.

Star-divide

He's still schedule to pitch his next game, but obviously, not much can be counted on him right now, and the prevention of an outbreak or passing to others should be of utmost concern.

Thoughts and prayers to Padilla and his family.

Wow

I heard the Rangers were under orders to not spend time with each other on their day off and rather than travel to KC yesterday they flew there this morning. They are up on KC 1-0 mid 5th.

Crazy

Vicente is definitely someone Angel fans love to hate, but you got to feel for the guy. Hopefully he will get through this.

On a side note, I found out today someone has tuberculosis at my work! Fortunately, they don’t think it spread to anybody, but still what a crazy thing to have happen.

Meh, swine flu is overblown anyways

its not a particularly lethal strain of the flu.

Driven into right-center field, Erstad says he has it...the Angels, world champions!

by teopeht on Jul 24, 2009 6:59 PM PDT reply actions

Exactly

It got publicity because of how rapid it spreads. He’ll be fine. But yes it would be terrible if it were floating around MLB.

by TheAntiSox on Jul 24, 2009 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions

not lethal

but easy to catch (strong airborne strain) and if you are infirm or not doctor-prone you could get dead in a hurry…

by Rev Halofan on Jul 24, 2009 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions

It's also hitting those in their prime

A lot more than happens with the regular flu.

Hopes and prayers for a speed recovery to Mr. Padilla, so we can all go back to rooting for the Halos to beat him! No, but seriously, he’s been one of the more interesting pitching-turnaround stories this season—it sucks that the “flying fickle finger of fate” seems to have chosen him for this illness…

RIP Nick Adenhart.

It's an odd type of flu,

and in the past it hasn’t killed the most vulnerable, it has tended to kill healthy people in their prime.

THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!

by opiejeanne on Jul 24, 2009 10:35 PM PDT up reply actions

that statistic is true

but the mortality rate is still low.

by teopeht on Jul 25, 2009 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions

I had it earlier this year thanks to a co-worker

mildest flu I have EVER had. The Dr’s in NY are not administering any specific flu medication for it unless you’re under 2 or over 60.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

by Moondoggy on Jul 24, 2009 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions

no...the 1968 HK flu and the 1918 flu

were much stronger strains and we have much stronger attacks against pneumonia, which is the after side effect that does most of the killing. This one is particularly contagious, but unlike SARS (which wasn’t particularly contagious — thank God), isn’t that debilitating.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

by Moondoggy on Jul 24, 2009 11:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Wasn't the bottom line with SARS

that if you washed your hands a lot and/or didn’t handle rat poo you didn’t get it?

I heard somewhere yesterday, maybe on the radio? that some player has pneumonia right now, and a teammate had had the flu; they didn’t say it was Swine flu but that’s what we were thinking. I wonder if that was the Rangers they were talking about. I wasn’t paying a lot of attention until they said “pneumonia”.

THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!

yep

Frank Francisco is currently out with pneumonia. He comes off the DL on Sunday.

i vaguely remember reading about the spanish influenza

and was under the impression that in the healthy adults it was a cytokine storm? or something involving an excessive response by the immune system damaging lung tissue…

Driven into right-center field, Erstad says he has it...the Angels, world champions!

by teopeht on Jul 25, 2009 9:32 AM PDT up reply actions

also like to point out

i read the book on the spanish influenza out of curiousity. law school has no time for interesting history.

by teopeht on Jul 25, 2009 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions

read the same book

your memory is correct. But it was still pneumonia that was the ultimate killer. The book pointed out that the research resulting from the 1918 pandemic was responsible for not only reducing the mortality rate of pneumonia, but was the catalyst for the discovery of DNA.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

Had it myself last month

I work at the airport here in Hawaii. It was only when I would catch it.

Lasted three days. Ache’s and pains, high temp. Still had my apatite. Just the flu with a name.

It's funny

I was at a summer camp near Riverside and somebody brought a flu up there. Only a few had it up there but on last couple of days, even more people got it. A couple of girls were sent home that week because one had a 103 fever while the other had 104. The girl who had the 103 left on tuesday and came back on thursday. Weird.

A lot of people weren’t feeling well on the last day. After we got back that saturday, it seemed like almost EVERYBODY who went was sick with a fever and all. So many people put up facebook updates saying how sick they were.

So the day after I got back, I felt like crap. And I knew I had what everybody else had. Two days later I was fine, but then both my brother and my sister got the same damn thing. I still have a cough from it and its been a while.

I bet that was the damn swine flu. So weird how quickly it spread and a fast everybody was healthy again.

by TheAntiSox on Jul 25, 2009 1:46 AM PDT up reply actions

Get well soon, Padilla!

Although I hate you when you seem to have a 3.000 WHIP and still get the W, it’s terrible for anybody to go because of swine flu. Hope you’ll be healthy ASAP!

He'll be okay

We don’t have to worry about Swine Flu until this fall. That’s when it could really turn ugly.

Hope he recovers quickly!

Aight since you cracked a joke.....which made me laugh by the way.

I will share this with you, which you may not find funny but I do.

Since the Swine flue was the center of attention a while back. When a hispanic person (originated in mexico if I recall correctly) sneezes I say
“swinflu” and they say, “gracias(thanks).” but little do they know that I did not say Salude(means bless you……when you say it, it sounds more like SALU……), but swine flu.

Its funny when you do it, doesnt sound funny, but try it. you might get a laugh out of it.

You know

In April there were, what? About 200 confirmed cases of swine flu with a handful of deaths in the U.S.

As of July 17, there were over 40,000 confirmed cases with over 250 deaths in the U.S.

That mother spreads quick.

Yeesh, surprised the panic level hasn't increased proportionately

Anyone hear the British Health Minister’s projection of 100,000 news cases in Britain per day by August?

Though I imagine having 100,000 news cases per day could also be horrifically frightening. ;-D

holy overreaction batman…

Swine flu is only deadly to those that are pre-disposed witha medical weakness IE: Cancer, HIV, etc.

He’ll be fine

No...

Yes, H1N1 has been overblown in the media. But it can and does cause the relatively sudden death of young healthy people.

Let's do this for Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, and Henry Pearson.

interesting we were 5 rows behind the Ranger Dugout in the game Padilla pitched. In front of us was Rangers Owner Tom Hicks, the GM and Padillas brother. Maybe he caught it from the brother?

unbeavable

so you are telling me that you two don’t honestly believe Obama doesn’t have a personal plan to save all Americans from this? He has made statements about the flu when it first broke, so there is a “place” for this.

When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!

by Dono Romantico on Jul 27, 2009 9:54 AM PDT up reply actions

"Unbeavable"?

I’m guessing you meant unbelievable.

I think what linkbruin meant is that you pulled politics into a thread that was totally non-political. That’s is what I agreed with. Just trying limit the subject matter to the furthest extent possible to baseball. At this point, I don’t give a damn one way or the other whether Obama has a “personal plan” regarding swine flu.
We already have another thread going where charges of “racism!” have been injected where they don’t belong. It’s a bit much at one time, and it starts to get obnoxious…

by sothball on Jul 27, 2009 10:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Unbeavable was meant to be a joke

if we ever talk about the White Sox, can the commander and chief’s name be used? He is, just a fan.

I do understand you point of keeping politics out of the thread. I honestly didn’t make a point of saying anything negative politically.

When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!

by Dono Romantico on Jul 27, 2009 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

OK. Maybe I over-reacted.

I’ve been in a running discussion in another thread on GA and racism. I should have butted-out, but false charges of racism really irritate me.

Then, I read a comment pulling politics (your Obama reference) in this post, and it seeemed linkbruin’s comment was appropriate, so I added the +1. I agree your comment wasn’t negative. In light of the GA/“racist!” post, it seemed to be getting obnoxious.

No harm, no foul.
