Remembering Nick...a question for HH
I know most of you guys probably felt like I did after hearing about Nick. I spent the whole day at work in tears and struggling to get work done, all the time fielding questions from friends as to why I really cared so much. After getting my patches in the mail a few days ago, I started thinking about what I really want to do to remember Nick.
I've donated money to his organization, I've bought the patches, and I've edited logos on my blog and here at HH. But I really want something a little more tactile, more physically substantial than the 34 sewn onto my hat. I tried buying an Adenhart shirt but was, obviously, declined by the MLB shop.
So I've been thinking...what do y'all think of buying the myriad Adenhart jerseys available on eBay? One of the guys selling them is the same guy I've purchased by Erstad and Lackey jerseys from, and while I was planning on a Hunter home white, maybe Nick's the best choice. My concern is giving money to people who are clearly going to be profiting from the tragedy of his death. Would it be better to hire an embroidery shop to do it?
What do you guys think?

I think,
That if you want the Adenhart jersey, buy it from the guy on eBay.
This is a touchy issue…Because, yes, they’ll make money, but look at it this way: They know that Angel fans want to remember him. Look at it as a good thing for our fanbase…
But, it’s your decision, and I think you’ll get plenty more comments…
Figgins is an All-Star. Period. Congrats, Figster!
?
Are the patches available from the Angels website?
I'm not superstitious, but I'm a little stitious.

I would buy the jersey on Ebay
The guy selling it might be a douchebag for the profit he is gonna turn. People like us however are buying them becuase of the love for our team and the pain we feel about this loss. Losing Nick was like losing a family member, the only difference, is that when a family member dies we get stuff handed to us in memorium. We have to search for Adenhart jerseys and other assorted memorabilia. I’ve been putting money aside myself for a jersey, and it will be my first Angels jersey. I will wear it with pride because the seller might be an asshole, but I’m buying it for the right reasons.
This team is our extended family, That's why we love them no matter what the record, no matter what the score.
go smaller & simpler...
As diehard fans, we get emotionally invested in our team and thus emotionally invested in the players. Even though we don’t have any real relationships with them, we tend to pick our favorites and not-so favorites. And of course with that love, we notice things beyond just how they perform on the field but little things that tend to make us root for that player even more. I.E. Rivera sniffing his bat, or how Napoli never buttons the top of his jersey, etc.
That being said, after Nick, I was pretty shaken up. However, after seeing Weaver go out there and pitch that awesome game, I noticed the “NA 34” written in sharpie on his hat. I promptly busted out my sharpie and did the exact same on my halos hat. Obviously this was something Weaver did in rememberance of Nick and to help him cope. By writing that on my hat, I was doing the exact same.
I felt this small gesture was an good way of dealing with it. It didnt involve any money. It was something my favorite angels did and barring a logo change, it something that will always be on my hat which I sport proudly, in a town full of Bo Sux and Skanks fans.
We all deal with things differently but I just feel that by going out their and buying a jersey, you are contributing to someone taking a monetary advantage of a tragedy and two, you look like you are trying to compete with who is “sadder” and willing to do “more” to prove they miss Nick. Get it?
Do it for Nick '09

I see what you're saying
But that’s not how I deal with grief, personally. I’d like to be able to hang the jersey in my dorm, wear it to games…the physical object helps carry some of the feelings, for me, at least.

no difference between the guy on eBay and "taking it t an emboiderer"
The guy n eBay is going to do the whole job for you, the embroiderer is going to make you do some of the work for the same results. The guy on eBay is an embroiderer who s selling you convenience and marketing himself more efficiently – if anything the old school embroiderer will “profit” more from the transaction than the eBay guy.
Yeah, but the embroiderer doesn't go out there and advertise an Adenhart item
So he’s not attempting to profit from it the way the guy on eBay does.

I relly don't see what the big deal is.
Get the jersey you want. Who cares if the guy turns a profit? Every jersey sold of any player, living or dead, turns a profit. He’s selling a product that you want. He’s not profiting from a tragedy, he’s profiting from those who want to pay homage to a player who was the victim of a tragedy.
Suppose he didn’t die and went on to become a superstar. Is it wrong to sell the jersey of a superstar player and turn a profit on all of their hard work etc.? That money isn’t going to their families. People make money off of ballplayers every day. I don’t see why death suddenly re-arranges the principles of capitalism. Shit, as I type this I’m sitting beneath a poster of John Lennon flashing me a peace sign that I’m almost positive is a bootleg. Should I feel remorse for buying it? ‘Cause I don’t.
Your heart is in the right place in your desire to honor, dare I say, one of our own. Don’t worry about the motive of the seller. Hell, I think it’s actually cool that he’s made it easier to get one.
Apologies in advance.
Buy local.
Find a mom-n-pop shop and give them the business. The guilt you might feel over letting someone profit from this tragedy will be ameliorated (first use ever on HH?) by helping someone hold off Wal-mart for a couple more minutes.

It figures
that the writer would be first. They can call us a lot of things but ‘illiterate’ is not one of them.

I was cleaning out my wallet
and I found a ticket stub from Nick’s first start at Rancho. I bought them as soon as it was announced he was getting promoted from Cedar Rapids and was able to get seats literally right behind the Quake’s on-deck circle. I had intentionally saved the ticket but had totally forgot about it when I found it last week. What a horrible tragedy!

Good keepsake there.
Went to Nick’s MLB debut last year (seems so long ago), hopefully I have the ticket somewhere in this house.
What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.

I understand your sentiment.
I posted some fanposts in late March after traveling to Mesa for a spring training game earlier this year. Nick pitched the game we attended. In fact I took some close-up photos from right behind home plate.
Little did I know he would be gone 2 weeks later. Too sad man, too sad.
We went to two Spring Training games in Arizona in 2007.
I need to check to see what players I photographed those two days.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
I seem to have more photos of the opposing teams than I do of the Angels
at either game. I do have a photo of Carrasco being relieved and Matt Hensley coming in to pitch.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
Here's one of the ST photos of Nick warming up...

It still just make me angry and sad and conflicted when I think of his ultimate fate. It’s just so wrong in so many ways…
I still can't watch the story about Jon without tearing up
I hope Nick’s family realizes the pain is still felt
