AL East Rules
Yankee and Red Sox fans here on Guam have been beating me up over the fact that our record is a product of a poor division. Yes, the Angels kicked our ass, but that is a fluke. Look at the strength of the divisions.
Every so often I check the strength of the division standings by compiling the W-L records/win percentages. Yeah, throughout this season the AL West has been behind the East.
Until Now.
AL West .530, AL East .529.
'nough said.

If it's about our record then look at the records vs the divisions...
Angels vs AL West – 14-17
Angels vs AL East – 17-9
Far from beating up a weak AL West to pad our record, it appears we’ve gotten our record by beating up a weak AL East
I see red people

Everyone in our division is at least .500 against the AL East
Angels 17-9
Rangers 16-12
Mariners 14-10
Athletics 17-17
i’d say the AL East sucks

I'd say so! Nice stats there.
Let's do this for Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, and Henry Pearson.

So, shouldn't the title of this post be "AL WEST RULES...(for now)"?

or AL Least

And the Rangers just took 2 out of three from the Tigers.
Do it for Nick '09

Just tell your buds to go to mlb.com and check out the standings. In two clicks they will shut up.
Just modify the display by clicking “vs. E” and “vs. W”. Let tall the embarrassing data ensue!!!
For example, as per the info already provided above, you can see that:
1) Every AL West team is .500 or better against the AL East.
2) The Yankees are 5 games over .500 against the West, the Jays just 2 games, and everybody is BELOW .500 against the West.
3) Overall, the AL East is a whopping 16 games below .500 against the AL West. Another way to say that is that the AL West is a whopping 16 games over .500 against the AL East!
4) The Angels winning percentage against the AL East is .654. In the entire AL, only the Red Sox are beating up on the AL East more frequently.
We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.

We haven't had a storm like that on the mid-atlantic seaboard in almost a decade
There are fantastic neighborhoods where people live in the houses where they grew up. There are loyal friends who move heaven and earth to help you whenever there’s need.
And the day after I retire, I’m backing up the truck and getting the fuck out of here.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

Well, that gave me a laugh!
What do you dislike about Pleasantville? Where are you headed post retirement.

In spite of the lack of massive blizzards
It is still freaking cold from November through March (this year through April). And even after 20 years, it’s still not home. Not sure SoCal is either anymore (beginning to sound like a mediocre Neil Diamond song) but it still feels comfortable whenever I can get out there.
Current plans are to keep going west until I get east in Thailand where I can retire and live with my wife, daughter and my rice farm. Sounds boring, huh? I dream of it every day.

Friend of mine
will be living that dream starting this coming November.
Thailand, must be heaven on earth.

Wow.
Going from the ’burbs to a 3rd world country handling a rice farm. Could you find a greater cultural dislocation?
One of the architects I work with is from the Philippines. Her family owns a beach resort on Mindanao. She returns once a year to help organize their huge Christmas party (Christmas when it’s 90 degrees and humidity is 80 %…not so comfortable for Santa!). The poverty is just overwhelming.
Anyway, how long before retirement?
by sothball on Jul 30, 2009 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Weather notwithstanding
There are enormous differences between Thailand and the Phils. The poverty in the Phils is at desperation level. While the farmers are anything but rich in Thailand, the roads are paved and the villages have electricity and running water (not potable tho). There isn’t the hunger in Thailand because of 1) the rice farms (#1 exporter of rice in the world — primarily to the Phils); and, 2) they’ll eat just about anything, grubs, crickets, frogs, rats (not cats and dogs).
Two years, Seven months, and 17 days until I make parole.
While the heat may not be comfortable for Santa, Moondoggy isn’t slipping on the ice and bruising his ass. Even with the heat, there is almost always a breeze to make things bearable. Besides, they know all about air conditioning in Thailand.
Finally (and this IS BIG), they have btoadband out there…so the day begins with breakfast while watching with east coast games at seven followed by the central zone games and finally, the west coast games until after lunch. Thank God for MLB.TV

Two years, seven months and 16 days...
How did you end up with rice farm in Thailand?
by sothball on Jul 31, 2009 5:13 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
My wife bought the farm with the proceeds of the "sinsod"
which is a reverse dowry or bride payment. For the first couple of years, I would ask, “why do we own a rice farm?” She would answer, “you never know.” Now, I just roll with it and it’s a symbol, to me, of self sufficiency. Her father does the farming and it brings in about $10,000-$12,000 a year (plus family consumption). Not bad wages for a Thai farmer as long as he’s not in debt. We grow about 30% jasmine or Hom mali and 70% sticky rice.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

The complaint I hear a lot is ...
that the Angels benefit from being in a 4-team division.
I love this team.
by Downing Rules on Jul 30, 2009 6:00 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
The AL West only has one team under .500
and we don’t have the KC, Nats, Pitt, and SD teams to pick on.
by eyespy on Jul 30, 2009 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
you can be at 501 all you want...
the point is the wildcard is always won in the East..when it comes down to crunch time..the west falls apart and the east heats up
dont get me wrong i love the angels. But this is hardly a fact for 2/3’s of a year

With an unbalanced schedule
the best division may NOT wind up with the wild card
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

The Angels have the 3rd best record in baseball and the Rangers are only 3 games back...
In fact, the only division the Rangers are NOT at least in 2nd place is AL East. Hell even the Mariners would be in 2nd in the AL Central….
Let’s also not forget that as a result of only having 3 opponents in our division means to fill our schedule, we play out of division more than any other division does.

1994 - 2009:
If you judge it by percentage of the teams in each division finishing with a winning record:
AL East 53.75%
AL West 46.88%
If you judge it by winning percentage
AL East 0.5066 (5186 Wins – 5051 Losses)
AL West 0.5137 (5062 Wins – 4783 Losses)
All stats are compiled from 1994 to present.
The fact that we are in a 4-team division means nothing. We have had an overall better division during the last 16 years. This is a key piece of information: There were too many 60W-100L Devil Rays seasons that provided the Yankees and Red Sox with the necessary padded wins to secure the wild card berth every year.
The AL West has only had 4 teams finish with sub-70-win seasons in the past 16 years (that is 4/64 finishes or 6.25%) . By contrast, the AL East has had 19 such seasons (19/80 is 23.75%).
I love this team.
