FRIDAY ANGELS ROUNDUP: Trade Deadline Edition
UDATE 10:25am - Oakland sends Orlando Cabrera to Minnesota for Tyler Ladendorf. LINK
UPDATE 8:40am - Seattle sends Jarrod Washburn to Detroit for two prospects. LINK
Hard to believe they won't do something - Angels Unplugged - Los Angeles Times
This is a time to be aggressive, not passive. If the Angels wind up doing nothing, you have to ask where they were when the Indians dealt Lee, the 2007 Cy Young Award winner, for four players, none of whom ever had played in the majors before. And what about the Sherrill deal? The Dodgers got the proven lefty reliever for two prospects, neither of whom is ranked among their top seven by Baseball America. You mean Reagins and Scioscia couldn't have come up with a better package than that?
Angels, Marlins interested in Bell - San Diego Union-Tribune
Late Thursday night, both the Los Angeles Angels and Florida Marlins were still talking to the Padres regarding Bell, who has successfully converted 25 of 26 save opportunities this season.
MLB trade deadline buzz: Friday's edition - FOX Sports on MSN
Angels: No Cliff Lee, no George Sherrill, no Michael Wuertz — and probably no Roy Halladay, either. The Angels are among the teams pursuing Padres closer Heath Bell. They could be big losers if the Rangers somehow obtain Halladay.
Angels' Erick Aybar has earned his wings - Los Angeles Times
The Toronto Blue Jays are willing to part with Roy Halladay. The Angels don't appear ready to sacrifice Erick Aybar.
Jays' GM: I doubt a Halladay trade will get done - FOX Sports on MSN
"There are too many logistics for it to get done (tomorrow). For someone to come on the spot at the 11th hour, knowing they could have talked about this guy for a long time, I don't think that it's going to happen."
Transactions - angelsbaseball.com
07/30/09 Los Angeles Angels optioned RHP Robert Mosebach to Salt Lake Bees.
No corresponding call up yet. O'Sullivan? Evans? Roy Halladay?
Pads talk Gonzalez with Boston, Bell with Florida - CBSSports.com
Meantime, the Padres are fielding several inquiries about closer Heath Bell and appeared to be engaged in serious discussions with the Florida Marlins. One source with knowledge of the talks said the Padres are asking for premier young pitchers and that there might not be a match.
THE ANGELS WORST NIGHTMARE -
Texas came close on Halladay, but deal dissipated - FanNation
The Rangers engaged in extensive talks regarding Roy Halladay over the past couple days, and according to one person familiar with the talks "may have come the closest'' to pulling it off.
Rangers/Halladay - CBSSports.com
The Rangers are serious about their pursuit of Halladay, according to a source with knowledge of the team's thinking. But, the source added, the club does not intend to dip too deeply into its carefully rebuilt farm system and will move on if Toronto insists on what the Rangers deem as too much.
Rangers talking Halladay with Jays - CBSSports.com
The Rangers are serious about their pursuit of Halladay, according to a source with knowledge of the team's thinking. But, the source added, the club does not intend to dip too deeply into its carefully rebuilt farm system and will move on if Toronto insists on what the Rangers deem as too much.
Source: Jays won't lower Halladay price for Rangers - MLB News - FOX Sports on MSN
The Blue Jays have not lowered their price in trade discussions with the Rangers concerning ace right-hander Roy Halladay. The Jays still want left-hander Derek Holland, first baseman Justin Smoak and two other prospects, according to major-league sources.
OTHER DEADLINE NEWS -
Seems like an earthquake is about to hit Boston - MLB News - FOX Sports on MSN
What will Theo do? As 4 p.m. ET Friday approaches, he might not know himself. He is looking for a shortstop. He is engaged in discussions for Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and Indians catcher Victor Martinez. At some level, he surely is talking about Blue Jays ace right-hander Roy Halladay, too.
Trade Roundup: All eyes on Halladay | MLB.com: News
And now, the clock is ticking. Starting at 11 a.m. ET and running continuously for 15 hours, MLB Network will have live coverage of the Trade Deadline. MLB.com will provide a simulcast from 11 to 6 p.m. ET. Halladay, the top name on the market all month, remains a Blue Jay, but for how long?

“Earning your wings” just doesn’t have that same ring to it anymore after reading the definition at urbandictionary.com
No, I will not be disappointed if a move is not made. I think we have what it takes in house. In Soth and Ninja I trust. Now, we just have to get lucky.
As for the Cliff Lee thing… we don’t know what Cleveland was demanding from the Angels. Maybe they asked for too much from the Angels. Hard to compare offers when you don’t know what the Angels had on the table. It sure seems that we could have beaten the Phillies’ offer, but you never know what went on behind the scenes.
I love this team.
Reliever FTW!

I agree. The bullpen isn’t going to fix itself. We should have been more aggressive
RIP Nick. We will miss you!
I love how
The Angels are just about the only team that hasn’t been involved with a trade this season, while teams like the Pirates have been involved in like 10 trades- the Bucs are going to be a very scary team in about 5-10 years.
We desperately need help with pitching.
If the Big Three don’t acquire Bell or Halladay today, I will be very disappointed.
I frankly wouldn't bet a nickel on the Pirates being good anytime in the next decade
They’ve been cycling out big-league talent for a long time now, and haven’t reached .500 since Hector was a pup.
Where the hell
Do they put all of their prospects they get. There’s just so many of them.
That’s why they’ve had big league talent, they were once prospects too.
If you didn't see it posted already...
…Mariners traded Washburn to the Tigers. Appears they have folded their hand for ’09.
A trade is not a necessity like its made out to be...
Everyone who covers the Halos for the OC Register and LA Times seems to be putting the blame on Reagins for not getting Lee or Sherrill or any reliever at this point. I think that is ridiculous. Who knows what other teams are asking from the Halos. And secondly, maybe we just dont have the players that other teams want.
Yesterday, jackass Mark Whicker wrote:
I don’t want to hear the Angels complain about their relief pitching any longer if they don’t want to take the steps to fix it.Whicker is obviously implying that the Angels FO arent willing to take those steps. That quote is after the Angels reported were willing to give up two of their starters (Saundo, Weaver) and their starting first shortstop (Aybar) for Halladay! Who is to say that they aren’t willing to do the exact same in regards to their bullpen and just dont have the players that other teams are looking into?
I think the trade deadline turns a bit too much into a frenzy and the mindset develops thast if you are going to be a competitor then you need to make a trade. Which is wrong. What was the big trade the WS winning Angels made in 2002? Obtaining Alex Ochoa…hmmm…not a key ingredient to our championship team.

The point is....
that the Dodgers got Sherrill for basically nothing and the Indians got Lee for prospects. One wonders why Reagins can’t do the same, in relative value of course, for a Bell or a Halladay.
This team is good and the lineup is impressive but unless the bullpen AND rotation miraculously improve before October we’re not surviving the first round of the playoffs even if we get there. You can’t throw Lackey out there for game 1 and then pray that the remaining starters maybe give you 5 innings and yeild 4 runs in game 2 and then hand it over to Kevin Jespen and expect to win the division series.
Note the 2002 team had a shoddy rotation but the bullpen was lights out. We clearly don’t have the bullpen this year with the current configuration.
Maybe Weaver and Santana and Jespen and Bulger will suddenly figure it out and become good pitchers this fall. I’m not holding my breath.
I know what the supposed "point " is but its invalid...
because its presupposes that Reagins and co. aren’t willing to dish prospects for Lee or Sherrill. There is not evidence this is true. Maybe the Halos were totally willing to part with the likes of Trumbo or S-Rod and it just wasnt what the Orioles had in mind.
Whicker makes it out like the Angels are willing to do anything but when reading the MLB trade rumors, there is a whole bunch that suggests otherwise.
Also, I think an bullpen and rotation improvement will not need to be miraculous like you stated. First, our bullpen has already shown tremendous improvement over the last two months. While Weaver has been our Ace for a majority of the season until the last couple starts. Admittedly, Saundo and Erv are of concern but I think Saundo getting his stuff back is actually very likely and not something that would be miraculous…
If Mike Witt came out of retirement and threw a no-no that would be miraculous.

Hopes & Prayers
What to you base J. Saunders getting his stuff back on? Will his eyelids become unjammed? I do look for him to have a good start against Minn where he has been successful, but 1 game does not make a turnaround.
Losing Shields and Arredondo going south has hurt! Of course E. Santana turning into the new Saberhagen (good one year not the next) has also hurt. Lee was a good fit for the club. I am never fond of trading (everyday) players off the big league roster in order to help a team that is winning, but the farm system is in place to help the big club. It could have done that.

hopes and prayers?
How quickly you forget that this guy out dueled Zach Greinke earlier this year. He also outdueled Beckett…which is more of an accomplishment because the Sux actually have a decent lineup.
This is the first time Saundo has had a major slump in his career…we’ll see how it turns out….

Except that's not true
The Dodgers got Sherrill for 6 years each of two players who are good prospects. That’s not nothing.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
I had a dream last night that the Angels only trade...
was for three pitchers from the Royals. God, I hope this doesn’t happen. :P
The time is out of joint; oh cursed spite, that ever I was born to set it right.

Proof that the Jays are trying to ream us
The Jays still want left-hander Derek Holland, first baseman Justin Smoak and two other prospects
So they want a just called up rookie pitcher, a minor leaguer and two prospects. But with us, we have to give them a starter who was an All-Star last year, our starting shortstop, our top prospect, and two other minor leaguers?
Do they think we’re idiots?
Angels fan since '67
If the Angels could trade
Saunders, Aybar, Wood and two no-names for Holland, Smoak, and Feliz, I would do it. Those are three of the top 20 prospects in baseball. All of those three project to be better than the three guys the Angels would give up.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
I wouldn't. Projections don't mean anything. Guess what Kendry Morales was projected to
do this year?

Don't break the farm system
For a year or two of a barely above average reliever. The Angels farm system is not in good shape. It’s taken a lot of hits recently and guys that were supposed to pan out are struggling (Conger, Arredondo, etc.).
If you can get a decent arm, that’s fine, but don’t trade more than one prospect to do it. If you’re going to trade anyone, trade Brandon Wood or Sean Rodriguez, since those guys can’t seem to do anything to get playing time at the big league level. Trade em now while they’re still young and their value is relatively high.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
Don't believe the hype, the farm is fine.

I find it hilarious that so many people are insisting a .600 team needs help
desperately. I ask you, what did a big trade at the deadline do for us last year in the playoffs? Nothing. Not a god damn THING. The only reason that trade turned out well is that Kendry Morales is blowing everyone’s expectations out of the water. Mark Teixiera did jack for us otherwise. So if we can get away with a trade that won’t hurt us longterm again, great. If not, screw it. Past experience shows we don’t get anything special out of them.

Deja vu all over again

Once again proving that the season record means squat……just need an invitation to the dance and solid pitching with timely hitting to win see:
Kennedy, Erstad, Spiezo, Fullmer etc.
