All Inclusive Trade Deadline Talk
There will probably be a bunch of moves today. Lets talk about all of them here. And how the moves could impact the Angels here. We've already missed out on George Sherrill, Cliff Lee, what moves do we think will happen? What our are needs? According to MLBTradeRumors who are quoting Seattle ESPN Radio, Jarrod Washburn is heading to the Detroit Tigers. That should slow down the momentum of the Seattle Mariners. I thought for sure he was going to end up in New York. There were a lot of talks last year as well as this year. Is this enough to get the Tigers into the Post Season?
11:30 AM UPDATE:
The Tigers acquired pitcher Jarrod Washburn from the Mariners for pitchers Luke French and Mauricio Robles.
The Twins acquired shortstop Orlando Cabrera from the A’s for shortstop Tyler Ladendorf.
The Brewers acquired pitcher Claudio Vargas from the Dodgers for catcher Vinny Rottino.
The Red Sox are this°close to landing Victor Martinez from the Indians... Justin Masterson and prospects?

WOO! Trades! Lets make some trades!
Seriously though, we should’ve made a move already. You can’t tell me we couldn’t have beaten the Doyers for Sherrill

by Vladd#27 on Jul 31, 2009 9:22 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's absurd that the Rangers would be allowed to acquire Halladay
There are serious questions whether the Rangers can afford Halladay, who is due a pro-rated portion of his $14.25 million salary this year and $15.75 million next year. Major league baseball reportedly loaned owner Tom Hicks some $15 million just so the club could meet payroll.
And at one point in June, because of the tight purse strings, the Rangers’ equipment people had only ordered enough baseballs to get through the end of July.

if they want to trade smoak and holland and whoever else, let them. with millwood getting worse or hurt, the impact of halladay wouldnt be as large as if millwood was still doing well.
meaning we could still win the division and theyd have spent a ton of money and prospects for nothing.

per Mark Saxon at the OCR…
The Angels recalled two players from Triple-A Salt Lake when they only have one roster spot. Coming up are utility man Sean Rodriguez and catcher Bobby Wilson.
Adding to the suspicion that a trade is imminent: Juan Rivera figures to get most of the designated-hitter at-bats on the artificial turf at the Metrodome, so why do the Angels need a third catcher? Is one of their catchers being shipped out in a trade? Rodriguez’s arrival could mean either Howie Kendrick or Brandon Wood is being sent to another team

Don't go crazy if the Angels don't make any trades
Sometimes the best trades are the ones that are never made.
Los Angeles Times July 29 ,2002
Stoneman Loses Shuey to Dodgers
The Angels lost out on one of the players they most coveted in trade, when General Manager Bill Stoneman refused to include his top prospects in a proposed deal for Cleveland reliever Paul Shuey.
The Angels believed that Shuey would have made an ideal acquisition, since he is a proven setup man and not a closer who would have to adjust to a setup role. The Angels are believed to have offered two prospects for Shuey.
In the four-player trade, the Dodgers gave up two promising pitchers, one their top-ranked pitching prospect and another a Class-A pitcher with 111 strikeouts in 113 innings, neither older than 23. An equivalent trade for the Angels would have included dazzling triple-A right-hander Francisco Rodriguez, 20, and a top lower-level prospect such as right-hander Ervin Santana (known as Johan back then), 18, a deal Stoneman would not make.

Don’t you think that the “extra catcher” move (bringing up Wilson from SLC) is to allow Naps to DH? Everyone is assuming Mathis is getting shipped out, but I think it is merely to have a backup C while Naps DH’s.
I love this team.
by Downing Rules on Jul 31, 2009 12:08 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Sounds reasonable
Rivera will probably be the primary DH, but playing on turf you have to think Soth will want insurance in case Rivera’s leg starts bothering him.
by Brew Angel on Jul 31, 2009 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
From "Angels Unplugged"....LATimes
Jeff Mathis is getting checked out by the team’s doctor today. He’ll be evaluated at that time. Bobby Wilson is just here for insurance in case Mathis can’t go.
I can see Sean Rodriguez in LF for some of the games this weekend. He played CF in high school and according to Sean, he feels he’s a better defender in the outfield than anywhere in the infield.
