He also got Palmer.
Not a small thing considering where we might be without him at the moment.

it depends on what they trade away.
Because from what I’ve heard they didn’t lose much making their trades.
RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09
Doesn't matter what they traded, it's a mindset. Something will go wrong,
they’ll have no depth to cover, and BAM. .500 ball club.

With a WS Championship?
What would you rather have, a .500 club 2 years from now and a WS Championship in 2009? Or a .600 club for 5 years with no championship?
I'd like to have a WS ring.
Even if that means the following year we suck.
i.e. 2002, then 2003.

Who do you trade for Heath Bell?
He ain’t worth Wood and/or S-Rod.
I’ll stick with Bulger and his high K-rate and his stuff over sending a bunch of folks away. Bulger, Jepsen, Dondo (if healthy), Oliver and Fuentes are fine. Not the best we’ve had, clearly, but not awful. Let’s see how this bullpen does over the next 60 games. If they are healthy, have 1/2 year of experience in the younger guys and keep their stuff – which is very good – they could be just fine.
Remember, they can promote from within too.
Bullpen arms are expensive for little to no guarantee. You are better going with guys that are cheap and throw hard. It doesn’t pay to spend money (or prospects) on relievers. They are terribly flukey.

True...
That did hurt us a lot in the playoffs… but I felt the team played worse overall after the trade. They just didn’t seem the same to me.
I don't konw how to explain it exactly...
It seemed like Teix put up big numbers, but the team just didn’t seem to be the same. I think there weren’t any real trades for a long time, then they dumped off a guy that had basically grown up in the organization. I’m not saying that Teix wasn’t an upgrade, but I think his arrival screwed with team chemistry and hurt the team more than his extra offensive stats helped it.
I repeat
what does that mean, “didn’t seem the same?” How do you quantify that? They won a lot of baseball games. You haven’t said anything…
Sorry, Jack...
I’m not a stat geek. I just watch the games and now I’m just commenting on a message board. I can’t necessarily quantify it for you. I’m just posting my observation. Take it for what it’s worth.

again, what did you see? I’m honestly asking. Because I saw the Angels scoring more runs than the teams they were playing, on a regular basis.
Last year they seemed more down to business after the trade
and seemed to stop enjoying playing the game. IMHO that’s what I saw.
R.I.P. King Ad-Rock #34
Yeah... that's part of it
It’s like the trade reminding them that they weren’t a baseball family, but a business… and they better start looking out for themselves a bit. Maybe someone fails a sac bunt because they are trying to bunt for a hit instead. Little things like that.
It's silly
because your opinion is not founded upon any kind of empirical evidence or reasoning; it’s based upon imagination.
There is reasoning.
Just no stats to back up the reasoning. You disagree. You have no evidence that we would have done worse with Kotchman. It’s all a guessing game. We all watch the game and take away differing opinions. To think you can pull up some stats and assume they would hold true in different circumstances is foolhardy.
This is really winding you up, though, isn’t it? Relax, man. It’s ok for us to disagree. Message boards would be awful boring if one person posted something and it was followed up by 100 posts of “yeah, that’s right”. I can only come away with new insights if people share what they think and we can disagree.
I'm not
the one trying to make a point; you are. Of course you are entitled to your beliefs, but I’m curious what you observed that led you to those beliefs, or did you form them out of whole cloth?
We were both trying to make a point...
Obviously, what I saw on the field led me to those beliefs.
What you saw (whether on the field, or on the stats page, or both), led you to believe something different.
That’s basically where we are. It’s a discussion that I think has to end at us disagreeing because there is no clear numerical/scientific way to decide who’s right.
but
what did you see? That’s what I’m asking. I haven’t said anything one way or the other. You started by saying they were “not the same.” How and why? I’m not saying I agree or disagree. Otherwise, it’s just empty commentary, the kind of thing I expect from Bill Plaschke.
I don't know who Bill Plaschke is...
but I don’t have concrete examples. If you were with me when I was watching the games last year, I could have pointed out the things that I based my perception on. At this point, I’m watching the 2009 Angels and don’t remember most of the minutiae of last years season. I just remember seeing it and talking about it with friends last year. Sorry I don’t have good specific examples.
Not sure if it's concrete, but here's
something interesting. Last year with Kotchman on July 29th, we were on track to win 100 games. We got Teixiera and all the improved batting he brought over Kotch and won…100 games. Would we still have made 100 with Kotch? Who knows. But it’s an interesting question. :)

Never give up, never surrender!
Sigh...
I saw that as well… but I saw it with either first baseman. After the trade, it didn’t seem like the team fought as hard when they were down and they didn’t seem to have the same chemistry.
You’ve already said my observation is worth nothing to you, so why worry about it. It’s not a stat thing… I can’t quantify it for you. Maybe, if I had a bunch of extra time, I could look through the stats and see how players may have or may have not changed and how we did in games we fell behind pre-trade and post-trade or some such thing, but I don’t have time for that.
Why don’t you just assume I’m an idiot and let it go. I’m obviously not expressing myself very well.
I seem to recall that
even that asshole Beckett noted that we were a different team with Izzy.
Angels baseball. We do what we must, because we can -- HaloDutch
???
The team won 100 games and Teixeira was on base practically every time. No XBH, to be sure, but how did not having Kotchman “derail” the season That doesn’t make any sense at all.

and other times you don't.
I know what you’re saying, but I still think we’ve got a great team without selling half of it off for a player that will likely be gone next year.
Say what you will, that ultimately worked out well.
When it comes down to it, I trust Reagins to do what’s in the best interests of this club. Whatever he does, I believe things will work out.

by Big Bad, 'Vlad'! on Jul 31, 2009 1:21 PM PDT reply actions
The reason
for the change, per a story on MLB Network last night, was for the benefit of teams playing on the west coast – i.e., they’re playing games in the final hours of the deadline, meaning they are shorthanded, whereas east coast teams could play with full rosters, then make a deal later.
You people are crazy
The Angels don’t need any more pieces to win the division and the playoffs are a crapshoot no matter what. Let it go.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
I keep telling people this. If we can get somebody relatively cheap, great. Otherwise, I believe

After all that..
I think JP Ricciardi is probably gay. He gave great oral and he sure knew how to stroke everyone!
Yeah Ricciardi blew it
He could have gotten a truckload for Halladay and came away with nothing. He’ll either have to settle for seeing a Cy Young pitcher throw for a 4th place team or take a crappy deal like the Twins got for Johan a couple years ago.
I think the Angels did the right thing by not selling the farm for Roy, but Ricciardi blew it.

It was reported that the Marlins had swayed away from Nick Johnson, while within in hour it was com firmed that they had acquired him.
I’m done with rumors.
Almost every big deal the Ninja has pulled off came completely without rumors.
Who the hell knows anymore?
I heard somewhere
That the Angels and Jays are working on a late deal and that S-Rod and Bobby Wilson have been called up. Could be an injury but please… What are the odds that someone would be injured on the deadline?
So the S-Rod call up probably means any pick of the middle infielders and possibly Mathis gone? If it has anything to do with Napoli, then there better be a damn good explanation.
but nobody seems to have a source for the SRod and Wilson call up, it's not on the official site. so who knows?

Mortgage
Are the same people who wanted us to trade every under 27 player we have & all of the Bees to Toronto for Halliday, the same type of people who mortgaged a $500,000 house when they make $50K a year? It’s bad math. Just cause you want it doesn’t mean it’s wise to do it.
Nick, you will always be an Angel. And you will be missed.
I don't want to deal everyone
I just wanted another top of the line starter. And a deal involving Wood, Aybar, Saunders, and a pitching prospect surely isn’t the entire future.
We have middle infield depth.

jeez, you think we just got eliminated and the season is over today, judging by some of the posts here.
THIS WAS THE TRADING DEADLINE. There are 62 games and and entire set of playoff games still to be played.
While I would have like to have a Roy Halladay or a Heath Bell or BOTH, you have to give Soth and Reagins the benefit of the doubt. They had all the information on the table right in front of them and they know a lot more than we do about what it was going to take to get Bell or Halladay. So, STFU with the whining.
I love this team.
